Steve, were the bulk of those from 1981? Looks like it, tho' the FF2000s are the previous year I think. Is Kevin Gillen in the rare Martlet? And whats Richard Mansell driving?

Doesn't the RT3 look better and better as time passes! Certainly more aerodynamic than the Burdis Firenza...

He needed the roll hoop at a round of the British F3 Championship that Mr Arron and I attended in our youth at Mallory Park.

After an off in practice at Gerards the rescue truck had to actually exit the circuit and use the country roads adjacent to Mallory in order to collect his car eek.gif

Isn't it a Hawke DL15?
Cirrus
The Hawke DL15 had inboard front suspension, as far as I remember. It's definitely not a Sark.

Maybe Diz has the answer...

Careful Dan, nothing wrong with a Firenza!! I spoke to Wayne Cherry last year about the Droop Snoot and he said after it was launched they did some tests with a rear lip boot spoiler, it reduced Drag CoE by 0.09 and added 180 to 200 lbs of rear downforce but Vauxhall wouldn't let him add it due to money, great shame.
Would be interesting to know how aero-efficent some of those single-seaters were/are.

Associated minutie regarding the Fred Krab incident at Gerards.

My dad always remembers that Fred Krab lost his wristwatch in the accident.

To be fair, you never know when you may need information such as that. The Dutch Racing Drivers With Amusing Names round of our local pub quiz suddenly became so much easier....... lol.gif

Elden, 1979 model had that chisel nose. I think they built three. I remember Ashley Ward had one, and Howard Drake [both red]. Mansell's was dark blue

Interesting to see Robin Donovan at Oulton, I didn't think he ever took that Crossle away from Brands

And my opinion of the Kevin Gillen/Martlet shot is that it's 1980. #45 in that picture is a 1980 Image: I'm struggling to remember the driver, but the car was an immaculate chocolate brown, and his helmet was brown and yellow stripes and he ran it in the Star of Tomorrow series that season [Was it Robert Synge?]
Mondiale M85S
Sponsored by Holdtite?? If so, that's Robert Synge. Dave Button also drove an Image from memory?

Not when it was in Formula Ford! Though that might explain its straightline speed roflmao.gif

I remeber being at this race, but must confess don't remember the Chevron B30 being entered and have never seen it in that colour scheme!

Who was in the B48?
simonlewisbooks
Alo Lawler was certainly giving it some shoe...bravo sir!
The race was a bit like "Ten green bottles" as yet another car disappeared from the rather good lead battle!

Who was in the M29 and was that John Brindley in the March 821?

Don't those McLarens both sound glorious? Something about the 78-82 era ground effect cars made their DFVs sound particularly sweet. Far better than mid and early 70s versions. Close-coupled ,top-of-the-gearbox exhaust arrangement perhaps?cool.gif

7. John Brindley - Falmer Jeans Racing/London Denim Co. March 821

10. James Stevenson - McLaren M29C
12. Antonia Loysen - Chevron B42
13. Robin Palmer - Magnum F3
17. Paul Rhodes - Chevron B48
45. John Holmes - March JH857*

* Don't recognise this nomenclature. JH for John Holmes, presumably. Could it be 852?
Phil Rainford
While Steve was out in the wilds of Cheshire at Knickerbrook I as usual would have been late for the afternoon proceedings after spending too much time at the Red Lion ;)

The Brindley March 821 on the grid.....

well most of the car is a March 821 not too sure about the front wings eek.gif

The front wings produce enough downforce to tackle Old Hall

Talking of front wings the Mcpherson Chevron B30

There's a good tale to be told of Iain McPherson [Stuart and Janet's dad] sale of a McLaren he'd bought. But it will have to wait for another time when I'm not so tired.

Now he owns the circuit. John Britten's Morgan +8

Richard Seaman meeting - Ray Fielding leads Alan Cottam

Sir John Venables-Llewelyn. R4A

Michael Glass. R2A

Soft-focus* Alan Cottam. Maserati 250F

OK then, waiting over.

The tale of Iain McPherson and the Bloke

I'm not sure about the actual figures, but the ratio is about correct.
Iain bought a McLaren F1 car less engine. I don't remember which model.
He intended to stick a 5 litre lump in it for Stuart to race in Libre.
He paid approx £6k or £7k
A chap - let's call him Bloke - called into his garage and asked if it was for sale.
Iain said everything had a price.
Bloke offered £10k, which was accepted and Iain was chuffed with 50% profit.
Bloke collected car and trailered it to Woking.
Bloke knew McLaren didn't have one of that model in their foyer collection.
Iain obviously didn't know that.
Bloke extracted £45k from McLaren
Clever Bloke.
Bloke went to the pub.
The end.

Supply and demand, eh...............?

Quality stuff lol.gif
Mallory Dan
In Alan's Libre entry list, I presume the John Holmes '857' is in fact his 772P? The Rhodes B48 is ex-Robinson I think, Phil, after BR had sold it to Paul Rhodes.

The MacPherson Mclaren was an M19 wasn't it, possibly also ex-Brian Robinson?

I got the results for this from Racewise: http://www.oldracingcars.com/results/result.php?RaceID=X574 Anyone have the grid or practice times?

I'm also puzzled by John Holmes' March. I know he has had a March 772P for a long, long time, but surely not this long.

This is the second row ...............so a calculated guess would have the grid as

Lawler
Trimmer
Brindley
Stevenson
McPherson
Robinson
Orgee
then confused.gif

Also a small but select Formula Libre entry from 16th October 1983 smile.gif

What does confuse me though is the red No.9 Crossle 25F. Malcolm became known as the pilot of red 25Fs' and his usual chosen race number was 9. I know it was one of our Peacock Race School cars with a customer in it, running MB's number - probably to wind him up.
I'll take a stab at Jim "Pink Panther" Kelly as the driver. Known as PP after his mother washed his race suit with coloureds and his nice, shiny white race suit came out a fetching shade of pink.
well i have to say Mr Smith how much i have enjoyed reading the notes posted on this site, i use to look after MB's cars for a number of years 32&25f. Reading some of the storys and some of the pictures have brought it all back and having not been back to Oulton Park for far to long its been great to see the place we spent so much time.
