Thank you kindly for the nice words young Greg [although I don't suppose you are that young nowadays]

Having just returned from France, I have been entrusted with another batch of Tim Blackburn's photos from the 1960s and 70s to post for your entertainment. Some of you may recall his excellent transparencies from Brands and Clermont Ferrand which I posted a couple of years ago.

A selection of Formula 3 shots to set the ball rolling...

Star-in-the-making Emerson Fittipaldi with his JRRDS Lotus 59. Guards Trophy Brands 1st August 1969

British GP support race 17 July 1970. James Hunt narrowly leads victor Mike Beuttler and Richard Scott.

Bert Hawthorne lines up the TUI ahead of Dave Walker's GLTL Lotus 59A. Thruxton 9 August 1970. Team owner/designer Alan McCall kneels alongside

The Goodyear tyre fitters enjoy a moment's respite at the British GP 1967 at Silverstone. Tetsu Ikuzawa's BT21 in foreground.

Chris Williams drives through the Silverstone paddock. British GP meeting 15 July 1967. Chris finished third behind Charles Lucas and Tony Lanfranchi. All photos copyright Tim Blackburn

For the entries and results I would refer you to the excellent http://www.formula2.net/

Great pictures Alan.

I still think that Lotus 59 nosecone is just fabulous smile.gif

Is that the GP support race? I would have thought there would be a few more spectators than that.
Alan Cox
It was actually run the day before the GP, Alan.

Brilliant photos Alan, I am looking through the old rose coloured specs again, but those F3 cars were brilliant! Needless to say, I was there, at the meetings of the 1st two shots, and probably the 3rd one if it was at Brands, but '67 was a Silverstone year methinks? Ikusawa's "Rising Sun" was certainly differnent on racing cars in Kent during the '60s, a great driver, especially in the screaming S800.

Didn't think of that blush.gif

The first GP I marshaled at was 1973 and it was also the first time I'd been there for the whole weekend. I must admit the crowds were a little thin on the practice days.
Alan Cox
Of course, sterling. the '67 GP was at Silverstone.

A couple from Donington Park, circa 1980/81...

I think this is Tim Sisson, but stand to be corrected.

I know this is Mick Hill, who had to resort to a BRM after VW failed to develop a CanAm version of the Beetle.

Not only is the photographer in a bonkers position he has also turned his head away to watch Beuttler force his way inside Hunt ( Careful Steve and Dan !!) and therefore ignore the cars coming up Paddock Hill towards him.....

Hope he is still fit and well

Photographers always lined the infield up towards Druids, but he obviously has no fear! The Lotus 59, just a beautiful piece of kit up.gif

Lovely shot of the Abarth Alan, thanks for posting but does anyone recall why Zwolsman came over for the Martini meeting.

Cyd Williams does Natalie Goodwin's Brabham BT28 no good at all. Anyone know the date? I assume that it's at Brands.

Tim has a number of photos of John Rhodes at the exit from South Bank at Brands, from different meetings but all wreathed in similar volumes of smoke from tortured tyres. Motor Show meeting 22 October 1967

The Black Esprit is that of Eric Rhodes if I recall. The red Elan is of Carlisle driver Stuart Oliver and the other Esprit is my dad Philip Barak. It was bought from George 'Welly' Potter and was based on an Ensign F1 chassis and had a 7.2 Chevy lump in the back.

The Donington GT series, was a wonderful championship and a great shame that it dwindled away.

Hi there, Andy. Good to see you back here - I see you are masquerading under another "nom de camera" - still can't shake off that pesky man from the revenue??? lol.gif

PS The young man in the Merc (No 12) is J M Fangio from the Gunnar Nilsson meeting at Donington, and above him is Tony Trimmer
Simon Arron
Camaro looks like Doug Emms, Van Diemen like Wally Warwick. Assume both were taken at Croft (talking of which, Tim Sugden has just finished seventh in a round of the Aston Martin Asia Cup here in Shanghai - he went from last to third and then dropped away, although I haven't a clue what went wrong).

Great stuff.

The Skoda looks like the John Turner/Arthur Collier car but I only remember it being yellow.

I would have said Mick Hill's Skoda. Looks like his no. 24 on the door. Is the upside down Mallock Malcolm Jackson?

Yes, Andrew your correct.

It looks like it's in Primer, ready to be sprayed!

1970 I think, I was in that cloud of dust at Druids. Cyd came to rest under the advertising banner the marshals uncovered the car and went to get Cyd out, but he fired up the engine and took off after the pack.
Andrew Kitson
Just e-mailed a link to this thread and that photo to Cyd. Sure he'd be interested to see that!

Hi Alan

Don't mention the revenue... but not photographs any more... oops

Only time Tony Trimmer could be considered above JMF

Just remembered JMF signed a copy of that photograph for me, but not seen it for years.
I think I must have left it behind when I moved out from ex girlfriend's.

Now I have the old neg scanner working I will dig through the loft for some more old stuff.

Hi Simon

Damn, thought the Camaro of Doug Emms might have people stumped for a while.
Didn't count on you logging on from Shanghai though.

And yes the Van Dieman is Wally Warwick.

They are both Croft, but which corners then?

Sounds like nothings changed for Tim, luck wise.

Last time I spoke to Tim Sugden was late one night in TigerTiger in Leeds.
He was chatting up some lass, telling them he was a racing driver.
Yeah yeah and I'm a Harrier Jump Jet pilot, ****-off.
Probably well over ten years ago. He might have married her for all I know.

Yes, GP support race in 79. But there were two Triplex Dolomites, I don't know who drove the other one?

Mick Hill it is, I thought it looked great in primer.

As regards the upside down Mallock, not Malcolm Jackson.
The name is on the cockpit, but might not be readable at this low res.

OK Simon, you might have got Doug Emms in the Camaro

But who's is the coach leading the double decker here?

I suspect I've logged in from Shanghai rather too frequently... http://forums.autosport.com/showthread.php...threadid=107214

Can't answer the bus question, I'm afraid, but here's the lad Sugden in present circumstances.

He won yesterday's Porsche Carrera Cup race and will be in action again in both Porsche and Aston today.
Alan Cox
Nice to see that the Aston Martin Asia chaps have taken a leaf out of F1's book by adopting the tiniest race numbers it is possible to find. That is just so helpful to the punters in the grandstands. Why don't they just abandon numbering altogether and leave the paying public to guess.

The bus is driven by Jeff, it says so on the side of the cockpit.

Great pics by the way, on the other thread, ever thought of a career as a photographer?

Not sure how to answer that - the other car was driven by my late father and he was involved in an "incident" with Walkinshaw that he was lucky to survive (even if the injuries did affect him for the rest of his life) but I better let other people comment on that as I don't want to get into trouble!!

As it happeneded:-

End Result:-

Rex in class lead and you can see damage on the nearside of the RX7 from where it punted dad's Dolomite (kindly provided by Rex G this week) :-

That accident happened right in front of me. I can remember it as if it were yesterday.

I was a bit up the road, towards Abbey and likewise, it's vividly etched in my memory! Terrifying. Especially as Gerry was always a hero of mine.

Here's the damage as seen from the back...

The roll cage stood up well to the impact(s) but the driver's seat didn't , I seem to recall.
And am I right in thinking that, as happened at the time, the race continued unabated apart from a stationary yelllow ?

But for this shunt , GM apparently would have been driving a works Rover in 1980 ... :\

Thanks Simon, not seen that one before - ouch!! Yes, the doctor's said to Dad if his seat hadn't broken he would have broken his back so all the damage he did jumping around in the car with no helmet (which came off with strap still done up!!) was the lesser of two evils so to speak.

And yes, he missed out on the Rovers for '80 because of it and there will be a more on this in the new book on Dad, including new stuff from Rex Greenslade, Roger Dowson and Jeremy Walton.

As Dad said in his Autosport column:-

"I am told I gave a better display than the Red Arrows, but the finish wasn’t quite so polished!”
Mallory Dan
Are we sure the Camaro is Emms, Baillie Jo Russell rings bells... The Tiga SC79 is Richard Morgan, and behind it the Sparkrite Lola T490 of Wayne Wainwright possibly?

The Power Station is the late lamented Donington one, not the extant Ratcliffe on Soar one. The former would not take MGR fitted HAAs, so relied on older vacuum braked stock for its coal, 20s or 44s usually....

Gosh, Dan. Very technical. I didn't know you had a power-generating anorak to share cloakroom space with your 1970s club racing single-seater one. Following your definitive treatise on rising-rate dampers, are we to be 'wowed' with one on coal-fired power stations? I do hope so.....

Am I to assume that any car photographed at Longridge qualifies as clubbie fodder, even if it's a McLaren MP4-23? On that basis...

James Hunt (March 712) leads Bob Poole (Palliser - although that looks suspiciously like a March nose) in a Libre event, July 3 1977.

Graham Hill wonders whether he should phone Merlyn to moan about the Mk30's crap aerodynamics. This is from the dubiously named Clubmans Champagne meeting at Oulton Park on April 8 1978. The six scheduled races were reduced by one because the proposed FF2000 event attracted only five entries.

By May 1978 it was Tony Sugden's turn to race this - a Daf 55 that had been driven by almost everybody apart from the de Rooy brothers.

Lionel Shakespeare (TR5) leads a genteel Prodsports cavalcade around Lodge, June 26 1976.

And finally, from the same meeting...

Does anybody remember this bloke? His name doesn't ring any bells and I can't find him on any other Oulton Park entry lists from 1975-1977. A gold star for the first person to identify him correctly.

Wow, excellent clap.gif , yes you do, that's made my day, even a little cry.gif , especially with the anniversary of Dad's passing tomorrow.

Great picture, it even has a young Geoffrey Marsh - I think he even still has the same shirt and sweater!!

It would be '81 (Richard Bond drove the DBR4 for Geoffrey before that and Dad drove the Lister and the Lola) and it could even be the first meeting I went to (that I remember), as that was at Silverstone in '81 (it was either April, June or September - June weather maybe?) with the DBR4 - I always used to call it the Green Tank - when you're 3 you don't know any better but then I'm sure it was called worse in it's day!! At least you can see I was well-trained not to get mucky finger marks on the shiny racing cars!!

In the second picture, the only guy I recognise is facing the camera in the green jacket, Don "Quack" Abrahams, one of Dad's and Tony Lanfranchi's best mates, a very good mechanic and sometimes racing driver too - unfortunately he passed away very suddenly around '85.
