I must have been just a little to your left, Edward. I was looking to my left at the time, heard a noise from the right and turned to see the Dolomite barrel-rolling towards me. As you say, an unforgettable experience - we were all very worried on Gerry's behalf at the time.

I was in the Stowe Grandstands and heard the crash off to my left; I saw the Dolly in mid-air but it was (a) too far away to have taken a photo, and (b) too horrific for me to raise the camera, I just sat and watched with my mouth open!

We're talking motive power here, aren't we Dan? HAAs passes me by but MGR stood for merry-go-round and referred to the coal trains. They were generally 47 hauled along the West Cumbrian coast line when I was a spotty teenage spotter.....

Thats it Rob, don't know what HAA stood for, but the last 'A' was for 'Airbraked'. Some wagons last letter code was 'V' for Vacuum braked. Did you get the odd Whistler too on MGRs on your line?

To celebrate the fact that my wife has found a pack of my photos some 20 years after they last saw the light of day and this is my 1000th post here are a couple of shots from the rediscoverd pack......

Although this Chevron B8 claims it has Roly Nix on board, looking at the helmet I think it is in fact Simon Hadfield

However this is Mike Smith

Just a couple of points:

1) Phil it's your 1,002nd post
2) I am sure the driver of the Sierra is a Wayne Kerr.

One or two more from the vaults...

A couple to whet Mallory Dan's appetite early on a Monday morning. It's 1981. Ian Taylor (Tiga FA81) and Ray Mallock (Ralt RT4) were passing through Lodge Corner almost as quickly as Tainted Love and, inexplicably, The Birdie Song were storming up the charts.

Whose line is it anyway? Martin Longmore, Willie Moore (later to land on his head, see much earlier post), John Booth and Dave Scott negotiate Coppice during the summer of 1980, when Donington Park's track licence was less of a headline issue.

Coppice again: Don Hardman leads Tony Trevor (wrong...), Keith Watson, Bob Juggins and Martin Ochiltree.

Mike Pendlebury (Diva GT). There is circumstantial evidence to suggest he'd watched the FF1600 race.

Derek Walker (Skoda), Walter Robertson (DFVW) and a testimony to the taste of Everards.

Little did Eric Walker (Ginetta G4), David Preece (E-type) and Alexander Boswell (Cobra) realise that the intensity of their duel would, 29 summers hence, earn them a place on TNF.

Mike Newton - LMP2 winner in 2006 (8th overall).

Mike, being an electronics whiz kid developed a 4 wheel steering system on the Hawke. Rob Wilson tested it and was reasonably impressed. Unfortunately the RAC banned it before it could be taken any further.

You can see the brass coloured actuator bars on the rear suspension in this pic.

I've no idea why I'm looking in my mirrors as though I'm about to block Mike - He was one of the good guys!

there the 9 Apr 1982, which Tony won.

Tony tooling up 12 years earlier at Oulton to do battle in the British Empire Trophy with his F3 Brabham BT28.

Apologies if these are rather more recent than is strictly neccessary, but I hope no one minds.... I only started watching on the circuits when I moved to Merseyside in 1990, so I have nothing prior to that, but I still felt like joining in..... blush.gif Feel free to tell me to sling my hook with such modern nonsense. ohwell.gif

So, MG Cockshoot Cup from Oulton Park, a staple of many of my formative meetings.

Paul Clarence, 21st July 1990

Unfortunately I didn't update my programme on 10th June, 1995, but 78 is Ian Wright, car 72 is the Class B Midget of Nigel Minay and 71 is Robert Nettleton

I'm struggling even more here - 54 is Mark Ashworth but I'm looking for expert help on the others....

Not many of these raced alongside the B's and Midgets - this is Jonathan Brown on 29th August 1992

Phil Howden heading for Deer Leap on 21st July, 1990

Looks a bit like Oulton Park.

I don't think it matters how many times a photo is repeated as it's coming from the same source.

Terrific picture!

The Stiller 74B with Bev Bond still as the driver (he's there on the far right disappearing out of shot) and just before Alan Jones replaced him and the car took on the F2 works-type chisel nose and side radiator arrangement.

I reckon it's Oulton Park as well - therefore the last race Bond had with the team as Jones split from the Multiglide team after practice, having failed to complete a misfire-free lap (if that makes sense)...

Back to the March picture - those Melmag wheels are so evocative of 1972-1974. They were a very clever design, but the technology to make them consistently was not freely available in those days.

I can clearly remember (as a callow 18-year old youth) inflating a Token F1 tyre to 40psi plus, to get it to pop out to the edge of the wheel. The tiny workshop evacuted in seconds, anticipating the catastrophic failure of the bonding.

It must have been one of the better wheels - it lived to fight another day...
