And John still has it and it is still road legal.
Thanks for that, Gregor, I always liked seeing that car & wondered what happened to it.

I don't see many photos of this car, John Pope's V8 Aston Martin engined Vauxhall Viva / Magnum?

I took this photo in the Paddock at Silverstone in 1975
A bit O/T, I admit, but does anyone know where my photo went? It took many hours of endeavour to post it & I can't find out why it disappeared. My apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place, no offence meant.

It was an original DTV Viva GT that gotten badly written off when the two Viva GTs clashed at Lydden in '71, Roger Bell and Mike Crabtree driving (Dad was in Old Nail, one of her 1st races - the other Viva GT got re-built too and I've bored people on another thread about that!!).
Mr Pope was one of Dad's neighbours and bought the remains and repaired into a Viva GT (Dad raced it a couple of times) and then when he got hold of a V8 Aston engine and a turbo-charger and he re-built as a Magnum - I remember Dad racing it at the St John Horsfall in '82; the noise it made was awesome!!
John took her to Thruxton for the 25th anniversary of the Droop Snoot race in 1999 but I'm not sure how much he uses the car now but he still had it last year.

Pete, I suspect it is the Guards Trophy race on 18th June.
Car 91, could it be the Clubmans 1500cc Milmor of 'Bailey' - no christian name in the programme. The reason I think it could be this race, Lotus 7 no.74 ( on outside ) is listed as Melvyn Coon but the entry also had Elva's and 23Bs etc, not just clubmans. Could that be Keith St.John's Elva on the left or Beach's 23B? Incidentally, the race was won by Mad Max in his Meadspeed U2.
petestenning
Andrew ,
You could be right there as it does say its from a recent meeting and it was the August programme so that the June meeting could indeed be right.

Melvyn Coon was a very regular Clubmans pilot in the late 60's most notably in the Dino.?

Thanks very much, that's filled in a few gaps, I work with former Mini Miglia Champion, Len Brammer, who was of the opinion that your Dad drove that car at some time, I wasn't so sure, but it's good to get the facts. Len always speaks of your Dad as his mentor.
The noise the car made will remain in my memory, as you say, 'awesome!'

The new book coming out will fill in loads of gaps - lol!!
I don't think I met Len, so please pass on my hellos - did he know Denis Bissell who raced the ex-CCC Clive Trickey Mini?
Dad did a lot of testing in John's car too - at Silverstone and on the road!!

Good luck with the book, sounds very interesting. I'm almost certain that Len has mentioned Denis Bissell, that was a very well known Mini & I still have a copy of Clive's Mini Tuning book.
Will gladly say hello to Len for you.

Speaking of Mini Miglias, heres a 4 lap sequence from Brands Hatch, in 1987. The drivers are Danny Allpress (black car), Mark Jones (gold car) and Chris Lewis (brown car). This battle raged for the whole of the race, which finished as a dead heat between Jones and Allpress.

I don't think it's a DB4GT, think it's a normal DB4 with flat round headlights but could be Pete Foster or David Heynes or even Paul Shires.
Didn't the GT have DB5-like raked headlights?

Brands early season sprint again this time a Reliant Scimitar .

Cadwell Park and W D Fox on board his delightful Delahaye, VSCC Meeting .

Sorry - not meant to be blunt.
For some reason I have an affection for DB4s though...

Another from Silverstone, 1974, David Howes' AMC Rambler, quite an impressive car & David could certainly master it, despite the fact it seemed much heavier than many of it's contemporaries. I remember the bright red glow of the front brake discs.

Not quite a personal photo in the true sense of the word, as I didn't take it, but one from my great friend Len Brammer's personal collection which he has allowed me to post. This shows Len's classic style at Donnington Park, 1992. In the yellow Minispares Centre car is Mick Cable.

Great to see old pictures of Scimitars smile.gif

The brown Scimitar GT is still used today for sprints and hillclimbs (although it's now blue with yellow bumpers:

I found this brief magazine article which suggests that Mike Whatley's Scimitar SS1 may not exist anymore:

Does any know of Mike Whatley or have any other old photos of Reliant Sabres or Scimitars?

Mike Whately was a former chairman of the 750 Motor Club came from Holmfirth in Yorkshire.
Raced a Formula 4 which ended up in a lake at Cadwell having vaulted a barrier. Also the afore mentioned Scimitar SS1.
Had the last time he attended our local rally and huge American Buick car if you like the US version of a Early Rolls Royce.

I think he ended up wedged 6ft up in the trees at Cadwell after going over the barrier. The incident was the subject of one of Catchpole's cartoons in Autosport.

Didn't Mike Whately also win the Historic F1 Championship in an Ensign?

Hi Peter,

I would like your permission to add this image to the photographic database of UK registered Mk1 Sprites www.frogeye.fotopic.net (it would be stamped copyright to you).
Do you know what year this was (you wouldn't still have the programe?) and also it looks to me like the reg is WUV745 what do you think?

Thanks in advance

Here's a Spridget negotiating Cascades at Oulton Park in it's own unique style....

By giraffe138

It was taken on 11th October 1969 and it's when the Buxton Trophy Rally organised by the Shenstone & District Car Club used to have a "driving test" at Oulton after lunch at the Egerton Arms Hotel in Little Budworth on it's way to the West coast. That year it finished in Blackpool with another test on Lower Walk.
petestenning
I too owned a Frogeye some years back , till the council decide to knock down the garages and i had to sell the car which had been striped and was in the process of being welded up as you know they do rot a lot .

I did have some pictures of it but they are lost in the house move and may be lost , i will have another look for them.

My Frogeye is on the DVLA site as an Austin too.
