Rog didn't hit him up the back, I seem to recall, they locked wheels under braking. Amazing how little damage there was to the Crossle.

BTW: Dave Lowe and AlanR were involved in this one smile.gif

Hence my Dave Lowe quote earlier. I'm still not sure what happened, but my bit of road got rather crowded and I was shoved up the escape road rolleyes.gif

Brilliant stuff Brendan.

Looking at the sheets that Andrew kept Peter Childe (19) started 9th, Simon Jackson (54) was 10th, I was 11th (59) and Dave Lowe was 12th (61). It looks as though Simon Jackson lost control inside Peter Childe and spun holding Peter up. I don't know who hit Dave Lowe, but it may have been Graeme Woodhouse whose RF78 is the car beached in the sand in later pics. He started 5th so must have lost a few places. I seem to remember a gap appearing for me to turn in, but somebody tapped me up the back, so I aimed for the gap in the cones instead!

Looking at Lyndsay's lap chart I started 11th (out of 30), finished the first lap in 23rd but was 15th at the end of the race , so for me it was still quite a good race smile.gif

Brendan, you took some really interesting photos with the Fisheye lens. One from Cadwell springs to mind - looking up to the first corner but at the same time showing the run down towards the Mountain. Any chance of seeing them again?
BrendanMcF
I'll see if I can dig them out. I'm working backwards through my archives, have only got about 20% of the way through so far...

It's no wonder they all crashed, there should have been a sign saying "Merge in Turn". That is one of the most unusual racing shots I've ever seen, cars coming from two different directions.

You had to be there...

Alan and Dave got a bit excited on the run up to the chicane and forgot to brake, meanwhile a bunch of following cars got distracted and missed their braking points, and scattered all over the kittylitter - it was like Hyde Park Corner on a wet Friday night wave.gif

I think Dave Lowe and myself were trying to avoid what was going on in front and just got caught up at the start of the chain reaction. It's a pretty heavy braking zone.

Spool back a few years to Formula Ford at Oulton, once again. A few names here went on to greater things (if there is anything greater than Formula Ford!)

Geoff Lees - all-conquering Royale

Rad Dougall

A slightly "iffy" shot of one D Daly

Matt Argenti - Van Diemen

Stein Lager's greatest driver, Kelvin Hesketh

Tiff Needell

Nice to note some of the evocative stickers reminding one of various FF Championship sponsors - British Air Ferries, Tate of Leeds and the notorious National Organs...

Whatever happened to Rad Dougall did very well in FF1600, then went to F2000 with Kismet ? I remember he also ran in F2 maybe still with Kismet .

Did not Geoff Smailes also run with him in FF1600 another ZA driver.

That's the start of the Toleman/Benetton/Renault lineage.

Great photos, is that Yuk Hodgson? Or a car that he sponsored, I knew of him from rallying mainly.

That is him all right.

The problem about the Rally Car Series, was that the drivers soon realised that the quickest line through the corner was the racing line and there was no point scrubbing off speed by throwing the car sideways......

....err hang on a minute smile.gif

Thank goodness you missd Dad's Monza he shared with Tony Lanfranchi and Ian Khan - he had new Escort RS Turbo and said it'd never last 25 hours so raced the Monza, the engine went in practice and they ended up starting from the pitlane and last 50 odd laps before the clutch went - what won? As Escort RS Turbo!!
Good picture in there of Jeremy Walton in the "heavy" XR4x4 Sierra - they decided perfect car as it was going to be a wet race - was the hottest weekend in June for years!!

I think they did about 50 odd laps and glad to see Dad in his normal attire!!

That was the year I was 'gopher' on the Van Rooyen RP24 with Trevor and his mechanic Chris Bailey. Great season.
That Vermilio picture - looks like Mansell in 3rd in the red crossle, the high airbox (hidden car) probably David Heale's Dulon. Then Pigot's RF77, with David Leslie's blue RP24 coming into shot.
