That was a really good meeting, FAtlantics were on the bill too. Gunnar Nilsson won that one in his B29.

Nilsson sealed the F3 championship with his 4th place. Indeed, a great meeting, Paul

I thought that the (wet) saloon race was something else that day (standing 10ft from the cars at Old Hall, without the benefit of Armco perhaps I was somewhat biased). wink.gif

The Easter 76 F5000 meeting at Oulton was superb, great entries to all of the races and some spectacular driving from the saloons.
This shot shows how the "office" on the inside of Old Hall looked from close up. smile.gif

For most of the Capris the road was never wide enough!

Michael Dale made the long trip from Nantwich in his Van Diemen RF82

When I downloaded my pictures I had 147 of a white Escort.....must be an age thing blush.gif

Graham Probyn's sidepod fails to mention that it is 863 Reynard

For Richard Longman read Steve Yates

Not certain the exhaust would pass 1980s Touring Car regs mind you

It is now obvious why Leigh Franklin can make a left front last all season

Only had 112 shots of Jason Christie's Escort

75 Gold cup meeting; I used to love these "mixed bag" races.

At the recent TNF Northern meeting, there was some discussion about the Oulton Park F3 race of the 22nd April 1978, prompted by a photo in Peter McFadyen's book of 1970s Oulton photographs. It was a race in which there was a terrific 4-way battle for the lead between Chico Serra, Nelson Piquet, Derek Warwick and Philip Bullman. Here are a few photos from that day.

One month later, they are back at Oulton when Warwick had ditched his Ralt in favour of a new March, which proved to be something of a mistake

Piquet's Ralt had gained the familiar green and blue stripes on the side of the nosecone, and a small spoiler ahead of the cockpit cowl

The denial of Bullman's victory that afternoon was an absolute disgrace and the people involved in wrongly disqualifying him should still be ashamed with themselves.

Bullman was always quick around Oulton Park - despite relatively few visits - but that F3 afternoon was probably his high point. He appeared briefly (I think) in an F1 Surtees during the Aurora series, but my memory from then on is non-existent, as it were.

Always rated Bullman..........at last week's TNF meeting Mr Cox asked the question if anybody remembered him challenging Davina Galica to a duel with regards to their respective abilities behind the wheel.

It drew a complete blank with me.

Anybody else remember the incident?

I contacted Philip Bullman and his reply is as follows:

QUOTE
Dear Alan
Gone but not forgotten which is nice, Indeed at a very early stage in my FFord career about 6 months into my first season. We questioned why John Webb was putting money behind Divina when there were many other young British drivers short on budgets, we did challenge Divina to a race but John Webb turned it into a 3 laps against the clock duel in Divina's FF2000 which of course I had never driven with wings and slicks and then a Ford Escort, her FF2000 was a bit of a old nail and the gears where sticking causing me to be unable to select any gear coming out of the hairpin on one lap, so I was 5 seconds down, next onto the Escort and I drove the balls of the thing pulling back 4 seconds and ended up only 1 second behind overall, in a race Divina would not have stood a chance, as I demonstrated later by setting a new lap record on the Indy circuit in the Formula Ford race .
Kind regards
Philip

Dave Coyne in the DFV powered Argo C2 (?) wearing it's 'Lancis Stratos' bodywork (squint in a bad light and you can just about recognize it as a Lancia...one of the less convincing 'silhouette's I think?) This one was BLOODY quick, but then Coyne was never slow in anything!

That name doesn't ring any bells, but well spotted, it is indeed an RT1 in the background, from the TF3 series race that day. The name on the cockpit side is Dion Sowery

Simon, whats the yellow sportscar behind Coyne? The nose looks Chevron-esque, is it a B61 or similar?

I think you're right about it being a Chevron. I don't have the programme to hand and confess I can't remember the car, so I don't think it was a regular.
One of the joys of the series than was the ever changing roster of entries. One race at least boasted a convertible Mini Clubman and a supercharged Mk3 Cortina among the 6R4s, ProSport 3000s, Mallocks, Maguire Imps etc.

This pic of Piquet's Ralt has upset me greatly. I had that actual nosecone in my possession as Piquet must have had an off at Mallory and said nosecone was lying in a partly damaged state behind a barrier after an Brit F3 meeting. It was spirited home to the family shed and there it lay for years. I guess you know what's coming here?

Yep, my mum decided it was time for a clear out and down the tip it went.

Bugger etc.

Yes most certainly 1st August 1981. Kenny Andrews (Van Diemen) was a none starter as were Nos 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 50 & 51. There were several additional runners:

14 - John Anderson (Merlyn)
30 - Michael Dale (Royale)
80 - Steve Furness (Merlyn), and
112 Helen Bashford (Merlyn)

There were 3 FF1600 races that day; a 10 Lapper for Non-qualifiers; The 15 Lap Bernard Hunter Crane Hire Northern FF1600 Championship Race; and a 12 Lap BRSCC FF1600 Invitation race.

Your correct. I should have looked at the results sheet and not the programme.

It looks as though Wally Warwick is going off while lapping the Merlyn. Others in the photo are Gwyn Richardsons Tiga(he was an RAF pilot), Paul Westwells - RP26, Richard Peacocks Crossle and John Swales Van Dieman.

'Tis almost a month since any club racing talismans were scanned for display here, so in an effort to redress the balance... The following were snapped at Aintree on May 3 1982.

A quiz of sorts... but only as a by-product of my own ignorance. I have no idea who this is, but somebody out there might know.

The picture of the Titan is myself Nick Price, the model is a Mk6 C. The car was built by Chris Feron, Derek Laurence's mechanic, using a lot of parts from the original Derek Laurence car, Chris sold the car to Derek Fowler for whom I was mechanic. Derek Fowler raced the car betwwen 75 and 79 I raced it in late 80 till early 82. Aintree was my last race I won my heat but got punted off on the first lap of the final, as the photo shows, recovered to finish seventh I think. Sadly Derek sold the car for grass track racing, ouch.

I remember that race well. All the other drivers went for the conventional high-downforce setup for the wet, but Piquet opted for a low-downforce nose and splitter (with the splitter in its lowest downforce position), and flattened the wing right off. He figured that he'd be so fast on the straights that nobody would be close enough to attempt to pass. He was right...
