David Mellor & Charles Fogg. David Mellors farm just down the road from Oulton sometimes became the Formula E hospitality unit!

Brian Mullarkeys Van Dieman. The rose and Belfast Car Ferries stickers are a legacy of our drunken trips to Kirkistown smile.gif

Mike Newton does an impression of a Flymo. He later converted the old Hawke to 4 wheel steering (which was later banned by the RAC).

A sideways Ian Slater in his PRS RH02.

Wally Warwick in another PRS. Came conquered and disappeared again. (I thought I was in this race but obviously wasn't!)

Finally Champion of Oulton getting it all wrong!

More good stuff, Alan.

Here's one missed from yesterday's post - Roger Eccleston returns astride Simon Wayne's van Diemen after an indiscretion somewhere out of sight

Good old Rog. I do miss him smile.gif

I think he'd been off at Knickerbrook and I also think he may have had a bit of a boll- sorry telling off for coming back that way.

I'm surprised he's not got a cigarette lit up yet smile.gif

Yes i remember the Kieth Grant Brabham BT8 another car i saw too rarely .

The Lola was pictured on the the race on the GP circuit, i think the Big CanAm Mclaren was John Foulston/ or Brindley and the Chevron B19 in the distance with the Lola was James Wallace 's Otford Group car.

Alan,
You're thinking about Long Distance Laurie Hughes. He does the Festival every year in his trusty RF77.

Young Mr Lague was the one who got sealed, stripped and disappeared off the FF radar.

I believe Wally is still about. He even does some instructing at the Croft School if my spies are to be believedl.
Nowadays he is calling himself Walter St John - gawd knows why.

I'd like to apologise to any clients who are expecting copy within the next 48 hours, but I have just purchased a 35mm neg scanner and might be mildly distracted for a day or 28... Here are a few snaps from Aintree on July 26 1980 - I haven't seen some of this stuff before because it was processed but never printed.

James Funnell's Morris Minor Special Saloon - note exquisite panel fit - and a couple of fire extinguishers.

All right, I admit to submitting this previously (at least once) - Gerry Marshall (far left) has just tipped John Myerscough's Capri into a spin. The upshot? I earn £4.50 from MN, my first published contribution...

...and finally get an opportunity to post the next frame in the sequence.

Rob Hall receives a helping front wing from David Salter.

No idea what's going on here. The Mk1 Escort looks unoccupied and the Mk2 is driven by Michael McErlain, who I think later raced the ex-Jim McGaughey Renault 5 Turbo.

Janet "Flying Lancashire Lass" McPherson - a rare shot of a McLaren M19 on Merseyside.

Not sure if that's a marshal or a photographer (Andrew Shaw, perchance?), but he and everybody else appear to be facing the wrong way.

Remember the time-honoured habit of merging races when entries were a little sparse? Somebody had the bright idea of sending a handful of Modsports cars out with the Pre '57 Saloons. As you do.
EDWARD FITZGERALD
jim funnell , great memories of his Phoenix Park appearance, Ireland had never seen a minor go so fast.

Simon - Out of interest, did you get paid when the Telegraph used this picture in their Motoring section several years ago or is it now part of the LAT archives?

The picture is mine, all mine...

It appeared in the Telegraph last year when I wrote an Aintree feature: the accompanying Moss/Brooks shots came from LAT, but I supplied this one.

lol.gif Glad you got the credit/£s for it and I hope it was more than £4.50!
Mallory Dan
James Funnell was from Leicester way I think, east of the city on the A47. He had a garage specialising in Moggies, so racing one was natural I guess, with a 1300 BDA OTOH?? Is the McErlain Escort the Derek Walker one, looks similar. And finally, for now, the spinning FF no. 5, is it an Elden mk 10C perchance?

Bring 'em on SA!!

Here are a couple more from the aforeposted Aintree meeting...

Jeff Wilson gets Country Corner wrong.

Jeff Wilson gives up trying to work out which way Country Corner goes.

Meanwhile, these are from the BSCC/Atlantic double-header at Oulton Park, April 16/17 1981. I've already posted some Atlantic shots on the appropriate thread...

Martin Brundle stalks Alan Curnow's Metro.

Stirling Moss - Metro not pictured.

This bloke rings no bells at all. He's listed as Andy Driver, but I can't remember whether he was a handy driver or, indeed, anything else about him.

I think Motoring News were a co sponsor of Formula E with London Motor Fleet.

Those stickers were hard to remove. I had a go - unsuccessfully smile.gif

Fortunately the bodywork was being resprayed the following week anyway.

As Formula Ford mishaps appear to be all the rage...

Willie Moore takes a tumble at Coppice during Donington Park's German Gp5 meeting in 1980. I think #1 is John Booth and #3 is Dave Scott, although Mallory Dan (Donington Dan?) will doubtless holler loudly if I'm wrong. Incidentally, if anybody has a programme from that meeting I'd quite like to see it (or a scan thereof): I've lost mine and there's quite a bit of stuff I need to identify.

Moore's Royale RP26 had a relatively soft landing.

I can't remember whether Moore was trying to cadge a lift, whether he was asking Grahame Tilley if he had any spare RP26 uprights or whether he was simply having a rant about the likelihood of ending up on a TNF thread 28 years later...

MN/Donington GT crusaders Derek Walker and Walter Robertson.

I remember that when Sir Stirling indulged in his ill-starred years as s BTCC competitor, the organisers couldn't oblige by giving him his favourite number 7, as that was reserved for runners in the biggest-capacity class, so the nearest they could come up with was 43 i.e. 4+3 = 7. Norra lorra people know that, I venture to suggest.

Oh I do. I also know that 6+4 = 10, but can't fathom out how 5 + 5 can also = 10

Did any of you lot out there do gizinters in maths?
I was good at them.

Assorted stuff from Oulton Park, 1980...

This is the same Mk1 Escort that appeared to be unoccupied at Aintree, in post 409. I have now established that it is Phil Barak's car. I think there's a 5.0 V8 in there somewhere.

Mark Thatcher goes off. Unknown photographer fails to notice...

Guys

Hey thats me... Andy Shaw, the geek in the white jacket.

Great site and thread.

Stumbled across this site whilst proving to a colleague that there used to be a racing circuit at Longridge.

Not got any work done today... god its good to see all those old pictures.

And great to see you guys are still alive and kickin.
Simon, Alan, Phil

Gona have to dig the old neg scanner out and contribute a bit.

Gonna have to get together, this site has certainly rekindled some great memories.

SA, the HB Viva, not Mike Newman was it, or at least his old car maybe? I don't recall seeing this beast further south, there weren't many non-DTV Vivas by this time, 1980 I presume. The Lola following Mark T is Nick Cole I think, who occasionally lent the car to Mike Blanchet. I remember the first time I saw a T590 in early 1980, and thinking how odd they looked - where were the back wheels?

And Michael, aren't the bottom 2 Crossles 40Fs rather than 32Fs, which the above Barfoot car is, unless its a 35F...

Yes they are both later than the 32 although I can't remember if they are 35's or 40's.

My PRS was supposedly a copy of the 32F.
Mallory Dan
Alan, wasn't the PRS a copy of Lazenby's Hawke DL15 rather than a Crossle?

And I think the 35F was very similar to the 32F, rather than the 40/45F. There weren't many Crossles over here after the 32Fs, I recall Martin Boyle in a 35F when new, 1979 I think. Compared to the masses of 25F/30F/32Fs, they seemed to become a little 'unfashionable' after 1979 or so.

The Hawke had inboard front suspension.

Our Formula E trips to Kirkistown culminated (after the drinking, racing, drinking and drinking), with a visit to the Crossle factory. We would all turn up, with cars on tow etc, for a visit to the Crossle factory. John Crossle provided drinks and snacks and a pleasant evening was had by all. Crossle didn't say anything about the PRS, but one of his mechanics had a few words about it - complaining about this bit's been copied etc. This was very useful for me as when I had run out of spares I went to Roger Eccleston, who produced a lot of parts for his and other cars, and I knew which Crossle parts fitted smile.gif

Something the series regulars probably hadn't anticipated... Jim Evans qualifying his Lotus Esprit at the front.

Jim Evans... crikey what a weekend.

The car was built by Jim and a potatoe farmer (can't remember his name, but his spuds were great) in a barn near Selby in Yorkshire

How many laps did it last? I can remember it did not finish, but it did a few.

I think they had just finished it, but can't remember it ever appearing again.
What happened to it?

PS I seem to recollect Jim worked for Electric Board at Drax or Eggborough power station in Yorkshire.
He used to tell his secretary he was going to Cosworth.
She thought it was another Power Station.
I guess she was right in a funny old way.

A noble suggestion, but the prosaic truth is that I spent eons digitising negs before I came out here and only posted a relatively small selection. Another 20-odd films to go (all 36 exposure) when I get back. I have yet to ascertain the Canadians' views on A35s or the Hewitts in general, but can report that the sport of buying cheap CDs - the whole point of Canada's existence - is dying out. Precious few bargains to be had this year and I can't find Nils Lofrgren's back catalogue anywhere...
