Born in Bootle!

As the Chevron is spinning at Country Corner and heading towards Valentine's Way I doubt he would ever reach Seaforth!

The Chevron's a B38 by the looks SA, Rob Moores perhaps?? The Hunter 80A, sorry no arcane facts. I think its in Ireland now, Padraig Mooney? Run by Colin Bennett in FAt here in 1980, the sister car was Nick Adams, and written off by the works F2 hotshoe that year at Snett I think, Manfred Winklehock. The 80A proved no match for the Leslie and Alo RT4s that year, nor sundry older cars. Nice looker tho'!

My Merlin Mk11 ran out of brakes there once, the only way I could slow down enough for the hairpin was to lean on Buzz Bazaglo's back wheel..............

Think he has had his spin and is pointed at your backyard!

he wouldnt reach Kirby either even if he was pointing that way

and probably more chance of having the wheels nicked in bootle - as my mate did in Earl road

Great to see you here, Andy. Looking forward to you getting the scanner out and posting some of your great photos. There are a lot of people here who yearn to see photos from Croft and Rufforth - places I never got to - so I am sure you can fill a long-felt want.

Alan

Rufforth might be a problem, I only went a couple of times before it closed.
And I was not old enough to go trackside (or afford a camera).

Should be able to provide some interesting Croft stuff though.

Just don't hold your breath...
I am trying to juggle a job, renovating a second house 100mile away, and write a dissertation.
Oh and by the way, we have a little Shaw on the way.

If my wife catches me on an F1 forum, she will confiscate my lap-top and not let me play out for a week.

Negs and scanner all packed away in loft somewhere.

But a poor excuse when Simon can manage from Canada

Can only echo Alan's comments !!

Andrew great to see you have discovered TNF ( Or as my eldest daughter call's it "Dad's Anorak Club" )

Look foward to seeing some of your shots from your treasure chest and you must make the trip accross the Pennines to one of our regular meetings....if Mr Arron can make it there is no excuse for you ;)

Hope to see you soon

Another grand prix over, another night manacled to the keyboard: a therapeutic break is required...

The elegant silhouette of the car you always promised yourself: Ray Williams in full flight at Old Hall.

Not sure who these two are, but I quite like it: note right-hand A35 heading for 'prohibited area'.

Following the overwhelming lack of response to the recent Viva HB quiz - only the dependably game Mallory Dan had a punt, and he blazed over the bar from three yards - the driver in the pic above is Mike Davies, whose home town was listed as Bebington.

David Leslie (in, I think, a Crosslé 42S) heads Jeremy Rossiter's Lola T590 at Donington.

Simon, when I worked for Bernie on the Digital TV service, we always flew home through the night straight after the race in Montreal!

I will definately make it before long, but as regrds "Anorak Club", they just don't get it, do they?...

Andrew

Andy McClennan in the A35 perhaps, SA? As for the Davies HB, was he any relation to Tony Davies I wonder, who ran a Spec Saloon Firenza, albeit mainly down south, and later became a TV star (car not driver that is). Was the Ray Williams Capri a 'home build', or bought from a previous owner?

The Leslie Crossle pic is interesting, was this at the Donny German GT meeting? If so, I think it was the car's world debut, Leslie in it as a one-off I think. The Crossle S2000s were very rare, and looked quite old fashioned I thought, compared to contemporary Lolas/Tigas/Chevrons/Marches etc.

As prepared at the tiny Sychdyn Service Station near Mold... parked outside when I passed by on the school bus every day.

This is rapidly becoming a thread for cars parked outside service stations!

You can't come here and not spend Monday a) buying things and b) meeting friends for a game of pool at lunchtime...

Chris Meek at Lodge Corner. Don't recall the year, but the Aurora AFX hoarding in the background might give a clue..There weren't many drivers who made a prodsports Midget lean quite that much.

Willie Moore takes a tumble at Coppice during Donington Park's German Gp5 meeting in 1980. I think #1 is John Booth and #3 is Dave Scott, although Mallory Dan (Donington Dan?) will doubtless holler loudly if I'm wrong. Incidentally, if anybody has a programme from that meeting I'd quite like to see it (or a scan thereof): I've lost mine and there's quite a bit of stuff I need to identify.

Moore's Royale RP26 had a relatively soft landing.

Slightly different view of Willie Moore's inversion......

......different view by one seat in the stand as I had to cut out Mr Arron's head from the shot!!

Mr Cox has sent through to me a scan of the Programme and it is indeed Dave Scott, although I am struggling to identify the third car that has appeared in the shot.... Warren Briggs in his Ray 80F?

Can confirm some 67 cars entered the Event.... the days of two heats and a final for FF!!

In the early days after Donington re-opened there were large stands at all the major corners, does anyone know why they were taken down.?

Could it be something to do with the flight path of East Midlands Airport?

Kind regards

Phil

Simon - I know someone has already said this could be Andy Mc but any ideas of the year? My Uncle raced Andy's car in 1978 or 1979 and a certain Steve Soper, Vince Higgs and Phil Wight all raced them too (all old school friends of each other; their posters on their bedrooms walls must have been exciting to all aspire to race A35s!! wink.gif ).
Simon Arron
Gregor

I'm fairly sure this is from 1980.

Cheers,
SA
Gregor Marshall
I reckon Phil Wight is one of them then (he won the pre-57 championship in 1980) and I will ask him if he remembers his registration, great picture any way. up.gif
Mallory Dan
Slightly O/T, but I saw a road going A35 last night, aren't they tiny? Good basis for a "Retro" tho' perhaps, a la Mini/Beetle/Fiat 500.

They're even smaller at Goodwood....allegedly. lol.gif

Not quite 'club' racing, as it supported an international - the 1966 Oulton Park Gold Cup
The grid for the Autosport GT race, with Gerry Marshall broadside across the grid, halfway up, with the BarMoCo TVR Griffith

The Autosport field approaching Lodge Corner. Some great tripods in evidence from the press corps.

Something from the Gold Cup proper - One of the H16 BRMs is push started

...and the field heads away into Old Hall

Fantastic, 17th September 1966 - I've got the programme (some great drivers in the GT race - David Piper won in the Ferrari with the TVR not finishing but being classified 7th).

Go through all the gallery links. I did not realise Archie's Zephyr Six was a colour match for the Lister, even down to the yellow stripe.

Jim Evans... crikey what a weekend.

The car was built by Jim and a potatoe farmer (can't remember his name, but his spuds were great) in a barn near Selby in Yorkshire

How many laps did it last? I can remember it did not finish, but it did a few.

I think they had just finished it, but can't remember it ever appearing again.
What happened to it?

PS I seem to recollect Jim worked for Electric Board at Drax or Eggborough power station in Yorkshire.
He used to tell his secretary he was going to Cosworth.
She thought it was another Power Station.
I guess she was right in a funny old way.

Jim Evans later became a great builder of Alfa engines which I think he might still do today on an occassional basis. In the late nineties his son peddled with great success an Alfa Sprint GT

For anyone who is not familiar wuth John Holroyd's work, you could do worse than spend a few minutes browsing his website. It's excellent stuff, Roger, I agree.

Indeed - excellent! Is this the same John Holroyd who ended up racing in Clubmans? A white U2 - or maybe Gryphon even - seems to ring a bell...

I think that is the other JH, the one who teamed up with Sheffield's own Barry Joell '69/73-ish moving up from an Eleven to various Mallocks IIRC, and started and ran the Northern Champagne Clubmans series.

I know that a number of TNFers have a soft spot for Sierra Cosworths in the BTCC (Pete Fenelon included), so here are a few to revive those great days of British saloon car racing, before it finally became a demolition Derby.

Mind you most of the drivers walk round with their knuckles dragging on the floor and a club over their shoulder!

Here goes with my first attempt at posting pictures

An early favorite picture, taken from the marshalls post on the inside of OXO at Croft
No idea who it is, old programmes long since thrown out

Does not show much of old Croft

Another early favorite from Donington
There is a third car sandwiched in there, I think it is a Clan Crusader

More to come when I get time

Is that Don Hardman at Mallory in 1982?

He totalled his RP26 the weekend before after a run in with Nick Phillips, was lent a car by Royale and was promptly tipped over again.

Don showed me the photos of the RP26 crash - it went on for quite a long time!
