The in flight Royale is definitely Don Hardman. I was an innocent 11 year old stood at the Hairpin that day, i had to ask my dad what "Boll***s" meant as that is what Don shouted when he eventually got out of the car........
I see Don from time to time, i'll tell him to have a look at this thread now he is starring in it.

Yes Don Hardman
As I recall, the roll hoop sheared off when it landed, leaving a long scrape from Don's helmet, oh er
And the inverted Skoda is on the exit of the chicane at Donington, I think it was Walter Robertson.

And the helmet was a replacement from the week before.
Don was leading the Star of Mallory Championship at the time and needed a car. I think Mike (Fulmar) Taylor ok'd the loan of the Royale as Alan Cornock was on holiday. If I remember correctly the wing mirrors came loose and flopped down so Don couldn't see behind and he ended up making contact with somebody at the hairpin, with the resulting roll. It's possible the first thing Alan Cornock new about it was when he picked up the following weeks Autosport!

As a guess, I'd go for John Price in the Skoda, rather than Walter Rob.

Does anyone remember the two chaps seen in the background of this picture.
They always wore a collar and tie and were always around at Donington and Mallory.
Cant remember wether they were observers or press?
I think the Muppet creators modelled a couple of their characters on them.

Ribero had an accident due to cold tyres. From that point on he always made sure his tyres were warm. He would come out last on the warm up lap and continually throw the car from side to side. His tyres were almost knackered before he started the race.
We always thought he had Jesus Saves on the side of his car because when Fernando was around, every sunday, Jesus had to work overtime

The Hardman incident reminded me of John Bosch rolling his Barron Van Diemen at Oulton Park in 1982. Anyone have pictures of that/him? Or the Van de Grint-penned McGregor Barron ran in Britain in 1979/80? Ore even the Ralt they ran in british F3 in 1981 and the British EC rounds in 83/84? Pictures of that period are very hard to find and John and Kees would love to see some. Thanks!

Both were good drivers, but are possibly better at what they do now.
It's interesting how some people know when to get out of driving and then forge a living in another part of the sport.
Here are some very amateurish shots of a club meeting at Oulton Part in the 1960s.
I doubt if anyone will identify the cars/drivers, but they do show what the circuit was like:
An MGB approaching Lodge:
Austin Healey, reg no EJB 806C, in fully rally trim at Lodge:
A Morgan behind a smoking Jaguar XK leaving Lodge:
And a couple of shots from the inside of Lodge:

Those lovely early 60s Oulton shots look like the track is newly resurfaced ?
As it would have been open 10 or more years that might be about right ?

Apologies if any of these are incorrectly identified, but there are quite a few holes in my late '70s/early '80s programme stock. I'm sure Mallory Dan will have suitable reference tools to amend any glitches...
John Morgan's Jaguar en route to third (of three) in class in a Rivet Supply Special Saloon race on August 11 1979. His theoretical rivals were Walter Robertson's DFVW and George 'Welly' Potter's Skoda... Julian Unsworth entered his 5.0 Mazda RX-3, but failed to show.
Classic Oulton paddock clutter that same afternoon. James Funnell's Minor takes centre stage, Nick Baughn's Alfasud lies left, Paul Fowkes's Hillman Avenger is straight ahead and Derek Walker's Skoda nestles to the right.
John Craddock's R5 might be considered badly parked until you contemplate Alan Clayton's, slightly farther down the hill.
The following are from either 1980 or 1981 at Donington Park...
Suspect this is Jim Mensley in action during an ASCAR race.
AJ Moore-Hinton exits Coppice but fails to head for the chicane.
David (Preston) v Goliath (Henry Crowther in his Jaguar Mk VIII).
How Preston might have behaved if there hadn't been a large, metallic slice of Coventry alongside him.

Simon, what is the story/spec behind Funnell's Minor? The odd brace bar in the middle of the screen suggests that the body might be glass fibre. Was that the case and what was the power unit? As one brought up to experience the delights of Mr Ratcliffe's Minor in period, I am fascinated.

Roger
Mallory Dan suggested, in post 414 of this very thread, that the Funnell Minor was propelled by a 1.3 BDA. Contemporary programmes listed it as a Morris Minor-Ford, so he's probably right.
I don't know much more, I'm afraid, but I'm sure someone will.
Cheers,
SA

The windscreen division looks like the standard split-screen of the early fifties, probably confirmed by the clap-hands windscreen wiper arrangement. The bulkhead detail and b-post and rear window construction again looks like the standard steel bodyshell, rather than a fibreglass copy... but I'll wait to be corrected by someone who knows

No scope for Morris Minor debate in any of the following, sadly, but here are a few more fragments from the summer of '79, when the Boomtown Rats didn't like Mondays and Sham 69 hollered about Hersham Boys...
Martin Carroll fends off Tom Dodd-Noble's Opel Commodore at Lodge Corner. It was a ShellSport Derwent TV Production Saloon race, won by Andy Rouse (Commodore).
Andrew Thorpe finished second in Class D. This probably didn't help.
Production Saloons time forgot: Sid Harrison's Mazda RX-2.
Commendably correct apostrophe usage from Mini 1000 racer John Meale.

SA, yeah summer 79 was a goody wasn't it? Nice to see the Morgan Jag at OP, from memory they had a stronghold at Llandow in the 70s, John Morgan plus assorted Williams' in them. The RX2 made a change from the massed RX3s, I recall Eric Cook once beat all the latter at Mallory once a '3'.

Hey, Simon, where are these Atlantic pics, then?
Simon Arron
Jul 1 2008, 22:15
No sooner scanned than done: from the 1979 British Formula Atlantic Championship...
Not sure what the partly concealed car might be, but the others in the Oulton Park assembly area are Bernard Hunter (Ralt RT1, #7), Phil Dowsett (March 79B, #21), Paul Smith (March 782B - its real name - #2) and Dave Allen (Surtees TS10, #96).
Ray Mallock's RT1 and what looks like a bit of Lola nosecone - Alo Lawler, perhaps?
Before he settled down to a career flogging Reynards (beating Tesco to the three-for-two pricing strategy by a margin of some years), Rick Gorne raced an Argo JM1X.
Andrew Jeffrey (Chevron B49) leads Paul Smith.
Before the off: Jim Crawford in Econopallet Racing's Chevron B45. Four years earlier he'd been driving a Lotus 72E in the British GP. Funny world...
Crawford in action. To me, the bloke was always a hero.
Dave Allen: mildly less heroic than Jim Crawford.

Having 'unstrapped' myself SA, I must say what a great load they are. The Allen Surtees was a rare bird that year, ofetn entered, rarely started as I recall. Backed by Savon (who/what were they) Team Uniroyale, wasn't there some Lodge Corner connection? The car in front of Hunter's RT1 in the 1st shot is a mystery, its not the famous Lebacq is it?
I completely agree on Jim C, Simon, I followed him from late 73, just about the time I got obsessed with FAt. I think this meeting started his winning run that year, up to then Mallock won most races, after it Jim had the edge. The next year though my support wavered, when he was up against my other Northern hero, Kim M, in AFX - and usually beat him!
Great days, from a great year, one of the best days being the first Thursday in May of course...

Dave Allen was a great mate of D Winstanley, and at one time they tended to travel around as a pair, but I don't think Dave was ever entered by Lodge Corner Agencies. Savon Tyres was a tyre warehouse in the Cheshire/Staffs area at the time, and presumably Dave had convinced Uniroyal Tyres that he was worth investing in.

Carnage at the top of Deer Leap. Barrie Williams is out of his car on the far side of the track. The 323i nearest camera was driven by Martin Brundle, who says: "Tiff Needell punted me off - and then everybody else piled in."

The Skoda equivalent of Russian dolls. From smallest to tallest, Derek Walker leads Tony Sugden and Mick Hill at Donington Park circa 1980. Note that Hill's car is big enough to dilute the marketing benefits of a trackside MN banner.
Welly Potter's 7.2-litre Skoda at Oulton in August 1979.

The BMW County Championship was really nothing short of a Demolition Derby. Whilst I was fast losing interest in racing at that time, I'm 99% certain a number of drivers from the earlier rounds stopped racing in the series simply because it was so destructive and vicious.
The carnage was all too often evident afterwards in the paddock where they dumped the damaged and wrecked cars - invariably in the same spot they had started from; clean, tidy and sparkling...
Mallory Dan
Jul 4 2008, 10:20
The Welly Skoda looks like the second of that ilk, the John Turner 5-litre car. The 1st one being...?? Anyway after Turner it went to Arthur Collier, the last I recall was Dave McDonald I think in the early 80s. Did Welly have it before?
