Certainly isn't a Ralt. Get thee to Specsavers, Rainford. Might it be the Swallow from 1987?
Simon Arron
Is there a prize for the first Mallory Park Modified Saloons picture posted from a hotel room in Budapest? Thought not...

I believe Geoff Thomas is driving the Golf. No idea who designed the tyre wall (or it might have been like that because the Ecclestons had featured in an earlier race).

Tim Davies ran a Reynard in 86 and the Swallow in 87.

It looks like a Reynard 863.

I think we are all wrong with the year

Looking at some more shots is it not 1985?

Cathy Muller leads Russell Spence.....

.....while Kerrit van Kouwen leads the future Champion Mauricio Gugelmin

Remember Mr Arron " One Swallow doesn't make the Summer" ..........of 1987 ;)

Mr van Kouwen, and his 'dodgy' Toyota engine, Phil. Strange that he seemed to come from nowhere that year, 85, and didn't do much afterwards...

while your on the topic of formula ford, if anybody has any pictures from 1980 of the van diemen rf80, or even the 79 and 81 i would love to see them, or any race results etc. . it would be a great help!!

Yeah he did Phil, in a Lola T644E. The point I meant was that in F3 in '85, he was a midfielder then suddenly won 3 races near the end of the year. He started in 86 as a champ favourite, but didn't do at all well. My little 'bro worked for Pegasus the latter year, and mentioned rumours about the engines the previous year...

You can't beat a bit of inside knowledge......

Sorry for that blush.gif

Two more shots of the man himself, with or without dodgy engine and dodgy spelling....wink.gif

Talking FFord 1600, and I have asked it before, elsewhere on TNF, does anyone have any details etc of engine builder John Manktelow?

Formula E Champion, Alistar Lane squeezing into Driuds at the Festival.

thanks for those! that first one, car no 18 looks very different is it some kind of special? also Nick Hammerton's car must be a rf81 i think with the inboard front suspension.

Car 18 is Roger Eccleston's Reynard (asking the marshals for directions perhaps) Phil's loaded the wrong picture.

Nick Hammerton's car is an RF80 with outboard suspension. Inboard wasn't allowed in Formula E. He played around with different nosecones and eventually ended up with side radiators and a pointy nose.

Nick was quite a character in Formula E and was always good for a laugh. He once went flying over the chicane at Kirkistown. He started off a foot off the ground. By the time the meeting was over, the story went that he was three foot off the ground. By the time we got back to Liverpool air traffic control had to be warned about flying racing cars smile.gif

I'm not sure why I took this - possibly thinking of a Spot the Snapper Competition in 25 years time.

Brendan McF possibly?

I think you could be right, but whoever he may be he was taking a huge risk standing on the outside of Old Hall against the fences as there was nowhere to run if it all goes wrong

I know: as just after this shot was taken .....

....I transpired to headbut Tony Dodgins who was running in the opposite direction to me, just avoid a pair of flying Reynards and bury myself under half a ton of tyres eek.gif

Its a long story

It would be good to get his opinion. The accident came up in conversation at the Northern England and Wales TNF get together last night and it appears it may not have been "just a motor racing accident".
Phil Rainford
At the Northern TNF gathering this week it was agreed that the Eccleston brothers always provided cracking entertainment during their time in FF1600 and Formula E.

Here Roger illustrates the perfect line into Old Hall.....

.....while Peter is about to land on his head at the Mallory hairpin

Here Peter keeps the Reynard on all four wheels through the esses at Mallory....

....sums it all up really eek.gif

Finally it would be a brave man indeed who attempted to split these two up!!

When people discuss the most iconic motorsport liveries of all time, they are always quick to cite Yardley BRM, JPS Lotus, original BRG-with-yellow-stripe Team Lotus, the Silver Arrows, Alan Raine's PRS and suchlike, but the classic Plygrange Racing stable is forever overlooked...

Gerry Gough wows the audience at Lodge Corner. Does anybody have a shot of him in one of his earlier creations, the Smarties Mini?

Chevron never made rallycross cars or lawnmowers, but nobody told Ken Gough.

The talisman of the Plygrange fleet: Lord Jim of Crawford.
Simon Arron
I haven't seen Mallory Dan around these parts for a few days, but suspect the following might flush him out. My grateful thanks to Chris Townsend, for locating a Formula Atlantic entry list and solving one or two identity crises... All shots are from Oulton Park on June 28 1980.

David Leslie - top bloke, much missed.

Most of the folk standing to the inside of Lodge seem to be facing the wrong way, but then it is only Fluxie in his Ehrlich.

Phil Dowsett generates a bit more interest. Oulton aficionados might recognise medical officer Big Dave, standing far left. Can anybody explain why the habitually vacant pavilion grandstand is relatively busy?

Nick Adams in his March 80A... although I always thought Atlantic Marches looked better with a 'B' suffix.

Ian Briggs (Ralt RT1) - I think he was the only Berkshire newsagent competing in the series that summer.

John Bowtell (March 77B): I pine for the days when it was socially acceptable to use older cars in contemporary series (although I suppose Super Aguri tried that tactic in 2006).

His Dulon MP15 once featured in BBC soap The Brothers, he went on to found the Omegaland team and, subsequently, to become a Formula BMW racing dad. A warm welcome, then, to Roger Orgee.

Rarer than a David Winstanley appearance at a gathering of northern/Welsh TNF brethren, it's Richard Piper in the Wimhurst...

#
...which appears to have been quite a handful.

Roger Orgee also featured as an answer on the quiz "They think it's all over"

Seem to remember that the Grandstand was occasionally hired by Sponsors who used it for their corporate guests?

Indeed there were a number of signed black and white images of the series hanging on the walls of the Red Lion. Of course I didn’t actually see them I was only informed of the fact by the people that had frequented the hostelry ;)

I bet you didn't know that the popularity of the series " The Brothers "in The Netherlands (where it was titled "The Hammonds") resulted in a Christmas album recorded by the main characters. "Christmas with The Hammonds", produced by Dutch TV host Willem Duys, reached number 22 in the Dutch LP Top 50 in December 1976 eek.gif

Mind you Mr Arron has probably got it on pink vinyl.....

Before they were famous, number one: Steve Soper.

In 1980 I think he was the only driver who split his time between the Debenhams Ford Rallye Sport Fiesta Challenge...

...and a Fiat X1/9 in the STP Modsports Championship.

Don't remember the Fiesta but Soper was pretty good in the X19. A bit like Jonathan Palmer in the Marcos. Both went on to bigger things.
petestenning
Soper also raced a Mini which ended up inside a MK Jaguar at Copse in a Silverstone race in the early 70 s.

And I believe that he raced a Mk1 Sprite before that.

The 750 Motor Club and Mallory Park are made for each other as for example are strawberries and cream, a pint of real ale and a pickled egg etc etc

Bob Davis ( Davis T5 ) and Dick Penny ( Lola T670 ) seem oblivious to the fine array of male 1980s hair styles on display, as they dispute the lead in a Formula 4 encounter....

....while Mike Whatley's ( Delta T81/4 ) attempt to outbrake himself at the hairpin causes mixed emotions within 1980s megaband " Wham ". Andrew Ridgeley bites his nails while George Michael seems unmoved.

Richard Chilton ( Porsche 911 ) illustrates how to achieve excessive front tyre wear along with either Andy Clarke or Richard Winward in the TVR

Mondiale M85S
Er, i'm in two of those shots........ I always thought that i was bang up to date on the fashion front but there you go...

I'm third from the right in the first pic and third from the left in the bottom picture. Judging by my attire i had come straight from Sunday morning football to take up position at the Hairpin...

Mr Rainford, re: your 80's hairstyle dig - i'll have you know that i was literally beating off the girls at school with a pooey stick as they couldn't get enough of my Chris Waddle style perm [which was growing out at the time of these pics lol.gif ]
garyfrogeye
Mondiale,

A nice selection of anoraks and a consistent pose is to be admired in a man smile.gif
Simon Arron
I always thought the 750MC did a passable job at Oulton Park, too. Here are five shots from May 1 1982. Note the absence of Mondiale M85S (or, indeed, any other spectators, stylish anoraks or otherwise).

Ralph Budd mixes a perfect cocktail of front-wheel drive and oversteer...

...while Chris Skipton does things the other way around.

More virtuosity in the art of drift, as demonstrated by Dick Robinson...

...and John Yeeles (my grateful thanks to Mr A Cox of Hartford for digging out the appropriate programme and helping me identify MGB drivers whose names I'd long since forgotten).

Colin Rodger steers a sensible path through Lodge while Ralph Budd mixes an imperfect cocktail of front-wheel drive and oversteer.

According to my Brands Hatch programme of June 27 1982, the gentleman in question did indeed hail from Sevenoaks.
