Yikes Phil.

I clicked on the link but clicked away as soon as I realised what it was and mercifully before the sound kicked in.

I think some kind of health warning should have been posted in advance.

Thomas Mezera takes one look at Mondiale's mullet and exits stage right under braking for the Mallory hairpin...

Phil, i'm not saying whether i did or didn't traipse to Woolworths on a wet Saturday morning to queue up for the Diamond Lights ltd edition 12"..........................

Has anyone checked out the Kevin Keegan "Head over Heels in Love" link on the YouTube link so kindly provided by Phil? eek.gif

Didn't Tomas Mezera escape from Czecho in the boot of a Mercedes Benz and eventually end up in Oz? Bloody good pedaller as i recall.

Well, while one of the other two chaps could at least sing, the Keegan tune was absolutely DREADFUL!!! Ugh!

It took me a lot of staying power to last until the first chorus...

Thomas Lundevall has posted some fantastic Brands photos in the Gulf London Rally Thread, just great photos guys! Have a look! I have requested that he posts them here, but not sure how often he visits the Forum. Keep them coming Thomas, whatever thread you post them in up.gif
sterling49
Thomas is still posting photos in the Gulf London Rally 1967 thread, a great shot of the S&K Brabham Viva from early 1968, any guess to the driver.........

Here is the aforementioned Jose Cordova in the Reynard......

.....with regards to the Stelrad Quest could it be Rowan Dewhurst?

Thanks Phil. Nice guy was Jose, he races saloons back in Brazil now. Never really reached his potential, one of the few Brazilians in FF without huge backing, although his father did own the helicopter taxi outfit 'Helisul'. After dominating FF2000 in '89 (at the end of FF2000's life), it all went wrong for him in 1990 when he tried to do F3 on a shoestring, then went to the states without much success. I've got some of his 1988 FF & 1989 FF2000 races on my movies I shot at the time:

Phil Rainford
A couple of shots from the 1985 Formula Ford Festival showing Johnny Herbert in the midst of his classic fightback from last on the grid in his Heat ( With 10 secs penalty ) to eventual overall victor in his Quest 85FF.

Here he enters Paddock after forcing his way past Ringo Hine's Van Diemen.....

..... while in this shot he has seen off Kevin Gillen ( Van Diemen FR85) and Ted Whitbourne ( Ray 80F)

Also from 1985 Damon Hill ( Van Diemen RF85) enters Paddock ahead of Rick Shortle ( Reynard 84FF) and
Rick Morris ( Van Diemen RF85)

I'm going for a large portion of anorak points here as i'd say the rear wheel and red bodywork on the left of the Mezera/Cordova shot is Andy Stapley in his Ray 87FF. smile.gif

Anyone care to agree or disagree on this one?

The Stelrad Quest is Rowan Dewhurst by the way....

Cook's team-mate Ray Chamberlain perhaps Phil?

Just as well I rarely stood at Shaws, given your comments on 80s hairstyles/jackets chaps, you'd have got me bang to rights, which given the presence of George Michael may have been very embarrassing...

Yes I saw them SA, v impressive pics too. The Wimhurst, wasn't it based on Phil Guerola's BT30? And what a great variety of noses in FAt there, not including Mr Ridgley's. Did I mention my little bro' spannered for him for a short while in '86. I assume Leslie won that race did he, he usually did that year.

Not quite period shot but this was at the Knebworth Classic car show at the weekend, is it real ?

I thought that the first Viva GT was the Shaw and Kilburn backed ones.?

Pete
garyfrogeye
I saw that car yesterday and it looked great. There was also a black one along side it and a beautifull (some kind of) bronze/yellow one a little way away. So three Viva GT's in one place.
I have a soft spot for them as having learnt to drive on a Viva HB, it was always on my teenage wish list.
Mondiale M85S
From memory the rest of the Formula Talbot grid would have been Johnny Hayes Harlow, Jeff Ward, Mark Thatcher in a Royale RP28. Tim Barry? and that's about it. Did Paul Jackson also do the odd round? That could be car 3 on Phil's post above??
Phil Rainford
Quite by coincidence Johnny Hayes Harlow was entered in the FF1600 race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton over the Bank Holiday Weekend smile.gif

It's real as it's a Viva GT and it belongs to a guy called Colin Robbins and he has been building it for about 5 years. He has done a fantastic job on it and it's supposed to be a "replica" of the Viva GT that Dad won the infamous Crystal Palace race in 1971. It has original fibreglass wings from Gerry J and externally is the same but underneath it's all pretty modern - you should see the size of the front discs, they're off a Formula Nissan car and are huge, I don't know how he squeezed them in!!

The first Vivas were indeed Shaw & Kilburn and started off white, black and red and then IIRC the first Viva GTs were painted white and then in late '70 early '71 they changed to this black, silver and orange (the inspiration for the colour of my Snoot).

There were two works/team GTs (quite a few had been built for customers) and they were "written off" by Roger Bell and Mike Crabtree during a televised race at Lyden Hill in '71 (Dad was racing Old Nail and beat Dave Brodie who had overtaken him under waved yellows at the crash scene!!) but one was bought by Gerry J and the running gear built into a race Firenza (which he shared with someone Burge?? Dad raced it a few times too) and the other GT was bought by Dad's friend and neighbour John Pope who repaired it, raced it (Dad did a couple of races in it too) and then converted it into his twin turbo-charged V8 Aston Magnum that he still has today.

Don't forget Stuart Jackson's (?) Van Diemen RF79 'FF conversion', Mondiale. And didn't Nick Cole convert a Lola T580 FF2000 aswell? Re Mr H-H, I wonder whether the Elden he was out at the Gold Cup in was the same one he used in the Star of Tomorrow back in 1976-77?
petestenning
Thanks for the Info Gregor, it certainly looks the business.
The first time i saw the S & K Viva s they were driven by Gerry and Eddie Heasell who comes from Royston and was a long time Monosposto racer with a Brabham.

And i remember John Popes Aston Engined Magnum huge bonnet scoop at the front and very wide wheels .

Funnily enough, Leslie didn't win this race Dan. It was the second of back to back victories for Phil Dowsett, who beat Leslie by 4/10ths of a second. 3rd Flux 4th Briggs, 5th Bowtell, 6th Westwood.
Funny old race too, which makes Simon's pics all the more interesting. I'm guessing they are from practice as three of the pictured cars didn't make it as far as his viewpoint in the race. I notice that most people are wearing wets, though the track looks pretty dry. Practice conditions must have been a bit odd as Roger Orgee put his old March [there was a 732 tub under that 78B bodywork] second on the grid. He then proceeded to spin going off the line and take out the Wimhurst, Duffield's Ralt and Adams's March 80A, stopping the race.
Mondiale M85S
I'd forgotten all about the RF79 conversion to be honest. Then again, i'd forgotten all about Formula Talbot until yesterday...... lol.gif

Great photo Pete, of a super car, I mailed it to a Vauxhall mate of mine, and he phoned me today, salivating, wants to know where he could possibly see this gorgeous beast? He is a basket case, I kid you not, still has his HA rally Viva from 1969 and his Rally Chevette from 1975..........

Hi I am new to this forum. Didn't Jeff Allam race a Viva GT in special saloons in the early saloons before racing a Magnum in prod saloons?

I think Colin lives in Bedford, I can't find his address at the moment but he's definitely in that area. He's also one of the VBOA committee members and has a normal road-going Viva GT - he was at Classics on the Common in that.

I think Jeff raced a production saloon Viva, but he then definitely got a Magnum which he raced in Group 1 in 1977, doing very well, and then progressing onto a Capri (which he shared at Spa in '78 with my late Dad) and then the the Rovers, etc.

Rob, you're correct he did race a Spec Saloon Viva. He and a 'team-mate', John Elliott were Brands/Lydden regulars as I recall, in the early 70s, 72-74ish I think. Entered by Allam Motors from memory, anyone got any pics?

Yes Dan i remember them too , gawd showing my age , Blue and Yellow ?

There was another one Prestige sponsored cant remember the driver but it did lose a wheel at the old hairpin on the Norwich straight and damaged a spectators car . There was a wipe round by fellow spectators for the poor guy.

I think Tim's cars were always white?? Maybe not though. What about Dennis Thorne or even the late Jenny Dell, what colours/sponsors did they have?
Simon Arron

Kim Mather prepares for a practice session at Oulton Park in 1979. I noticed at the weekend that the March 772P is now regarded as "historic", which means I must be, too.

Eric Pennington - a legend at Oulton Park, but slightly unsure about the geography 30-odd miles down the road at Aintree.

Mind you, he wasn't the only one... Here's Rick Shortle in the Getem, from one of the final Aintree car meetings (April 1982).

On the Kim pic, Simon, I think thats his late mum next to him. This car is much discussed on The Other Place as I type!!

Wow, Steve, they're Spec/Supersaloons not Modsaloons! 1980-81 ish perhaps. I recognise the Dickinson and Derek W Skodas, the Baldwin Mini and Wallwork Chevette, I think, but not the Escorts.

By the way and completly O/T, the 'Mike' you introduced me to on Monday, do you have his surname, not Ticehurst was it??

Could the Escort leading the Baldwin Mini be Jim Evans? confused.gif

I think Steve's shots are from August 8 1981.

Escort #32 is John Wood's low-line 1.3-litre car. The Mk1, #12, is driven by Eddy Beermann and listed with a 2.0 turbo.

The top two are from the BRSCC Saloon Car Festival on August 9 1980.

Pic A shows John Travis (Mini), Len Elkerton (Imp), Ray Williams (Capri), Jim Radcliffe (Escort) and Steve Beamish (Mini Clubman). Pic B features Messrs Williams and Elkerton, whose Imp had a very peculiar panel-fit arrangement...

While you were loitering at Fosters, I had taken the lazy option and strolled only to Old Hall.
