Fantastic, the red TR6 had fun!!

If it's the 6th August then it's the Uniroyal Tyres Production Sports the blue and white Lotus (ex-James Bond car and was built by Andy Rouse for Pete Hall and is now in the Haynes motor museum in JPS colours) is my Dad and I think that the white Porsche 928 is Tony Lanfranchi. As for the others I don't know and unfortunately I don't have a programme for that event - can Mr Cox help??

The red TR6 is Richard Morrant who transferred his Fosters circuit woes to Silverstone as he couldn't get around Woodcote without a huge, lairy spin as i seem to recall. Quality stuff!

the number of your dads car.

Mention of the Wimhurst earlier prompted me to find these two photos from a Mallory Formula Libre race in 1973.
Ian Stronach was driving the Kincraft and Jack Paterson of course, was driving the Wimhurst.

(Don't know how to 'quote' the photos, sorry.)

Those photos perfectly show the typical highly sophisticated club racing of the period!

One photo shows the complete pitcrew (average age 10?) while the other one shows the sophisticated transporters being used. (Come to think of it I have just restored (sandblasted and painted) a trailer that looks something like those although mine at least has suspension!)

Maybe with that sort of dedication we would have bigger fields these days!

That is a very good point. You don't get the likes of Roy Klomfass & Rory Byrne dossing down in their transporter
when they first came to the UK in '73, totally dedicated to the racing programme (all year round, not just race meetings!) I know a couple of club racers today who won't go if they can't take the Winnebago. Pathetic.

Talking of painting trailers, I remember a 1978 Silverstone meeting. In between the heats and final, most of the top FF guys had the heads off, feeler gauges out checking all was OK to find that extra 0.1 bhp. Except one guy, he was painting his trailer in the paddock. The same red as his race car. Kills a bit of time I suppose.
2Bob
I pitcrewed for a pair of FF drivers in the UK in 1976, they were from Cheltenham or Gloucester . They had one Crosle FF between them, as I remember it the older one (in his 30s?) owned the chassis and the younger (20 ish) owned the engine, not sure about the gearbox! Their transporter was a VW tray top. I rememeber one weekend with two race meetings at different circuits. Pretty busy.

The younger guy end for ended the car in some race (not the weekend above) and they built a jig to build a new chassis (or three) over the winter. I often wondered what happened to them in the following years, I came back to Oz about then. Any of the above suggest a name or 2 for these guys from you knowledgable UK FF fans?

Also remember Kennedy in his bus doing the FF races. Pretty dedicated I would say.

There was one at Snetterton too Andrew, i was observer down the straight when Senna being frustrated at not being able to pass Martin for a long period, decided a do or die moment by taking the inside into the esses and having found there was no longer enough road took to the grass. How he missed Martin at the apex i dont know because grass wont slow you down and it launched him. The end of this was out of my sight but it was exciting to say the least.

Interesting, I never saw this (Oulton) incident in moving pictures! It shows what a "competitive animal" Senna was, but also already that well known, and somewhat unhealthy dose of confidence, or even arrogance. That move was NEVER on!

That has to be worth some kind of anorak token. I'm sure you're right - I can't remember which of Ayrton's previous shunts necessitated the hire deal. It might have been a consequence of his accident in the previous OP race, when he crashed at Druids while chasing Martin.

I reported both Oulton F3 races that summer (for MN) and well remember standing outside the stewards' office with Messrs B & S after the multi-storey incident at Fosters. The three of us had a perfectly cordial discussion about the events of the previous half-hour while they waited like naughty schoolboys, wondering what the headmaster might say.

I'd also like to compliment Steve for reminding us all what FF1600 cars looked like through the original Knickerbrook. I can see why Karl Jones crashed but can't quite understand why Jonathan Bancroft didn't...

I think Senna went off at the mountain at Cadwell before this Oulton round ,the Druids
crash was on sept 11 83 .

Do I get an anorak token PLEASE,
Cheers
Steve
Simon Arron
Oops. I trust my report of the race was a touch more accurate than my previous post.
2F-001
Senna's "off" at Cadwell was in practice and he didn't get to race, despite having secured pole. Brundle cruised to pretty-much unopposed win.
That was one of my earliest (possibly my first) visit to Cadwell and whilst it's always great to see a "new" circuit the trip was dulled just a touch (though it is a wonderful circuit though) by that anticipated encounter failing to materialize.

Can't identify the above, but I recognise most of the following...

The lad Rainford previously posted a few pix of Phil Andrews, so here's one of his dad David, racing a Tecno 764 in the AMHEC Formula Four championship.

This makes me want to rewind the clock 30 years, to hear the squeal of Production Saloon tyres accompanied by the bark of a Mazda rotary. Vic Covey (RX-2) leads an Opel Commodore (probably Hamish Irvine, although someone out there might know better).

The Attenboroughs have made several splendid wildlife documentaries: I think they should now be set on the trail of the great Modsports cars of the 1970s. There must be some out there somewhere... This is Barrie Mutlow's Frogeye, taken (like everything else in this post) at Oulton Park on September 16 1978.

Formula Ford when it was proper: Trevor Templeton (Van Diemen RF78) leads John Davies (Crosslé 32F).

He didn't know it at the time, but one day Almo Coppelli (Tiga FF78) would become a pivotal figure in the Alba Group C2 team.

He didn't know it at the time, but one day John Wadsworth would be able to shed his Merlyn Mk24 in favour of a works Agent DR1.

Finally, for now, here's one for Andrew Kitson, who probably polished Kenny Acheson's Royale RP24 a matter of minutes before this shot was taken.
Mondiale M85S
Simon Hadfield was out testing an RMC orange coloured RP24 a couple of weeks back at Mallory. A beautiful little car....
Andrew Kitson
Excellent stuff, thanks Simon. I pointed Simon Hadfield in the direction of some of the shots posted on here a while back ( including Alan Cox's pictures) so he could replicate that RMC scheme. There is another RP24 in RMC colours running in France apparantly. I wonder if Mr.Hadfield has managed to find 30 odd 'Shellsport' winners stars too?

With the discussions relating to the FF2000 race at the Oulton Park Gold Cup Meeting still fresh in the mind here are some shots from one of the first Championships for FF2000 cars that by 1985 were considered as not "mint in the box"

This is the Phoenix-Banner-Towing Pre-81 FF2000 Championship Race ( In case you were wondering the sponsors specialised in towing banners behind light aircraft.)

The immaculate and extremely rapid Lola T580 of Peter Boutwood

Doncaster's representative in the field was John Swainston in his Royale RP27

While Mark Curley made the journey from Mkt Deeping to Oulton to race his Royale RP25

Formula Once
Any pictures of Kees van de Grint in the Palister FFord anyone? Must have been 1975-ish?
Cirrus
Great FF2000 pictures! - from a time when they were not Historic, just old...

I wonder where that RP25 is now? It would be great to have one of those out with us.

And an Agent DR1 - where are they?

Phil,

Was this 1985?

I sort of thought that Richard Peacock and I came up with the first ever Pre something FF2000 idea [in our case Pre83] and BARC NW ran our pilot race in 1986 at Oulton. BARC HQ then ran a Pre80 championship from 1987. It was some years before they got it right at Pre83 - but that is another tale.

BTW, I don't remember the Phoenix-Banner-Towing Pre-81 FF2000 Championship. Have you made that bit up?

Ian

You are quite right this was 1986 blush.gif

However the name of the Championship is real......

and according to the Programme although 1986 was the first year the Championship had gone national the BARC had being running it on a local level for the two previous seasons.

Seeing the Coppelli pic above, anyone else remember when Neville Hay used to get Almo mixed up with Ivan Capelli, at the S'Stone 1000Ks every year!! At that time a hotshoe, I can't think Ivan would have sullied himself with a beaten up Jolly Club Alba...

And Fris in the Reynard, looks like one of the lovely SF80s, nose at least. I assume it was his 'usual' 79 tho'.

Peter went to F3 in 87/88 where he met and raced against Damon Hill. Peter and Damon became the best of friends. Peter was a key part of DH's entourage helping out on his management side in F1 (with Michael Breen) and he also designed all of the Hill merchandise (T-shirts/baseball caps etc) and also later the entire David Coulthard range. He also did some corporate colour scheme/designs, the BTCC black & green striped MGs in the BTCC in 2001/2002 and Le Mans Lola/MGs. I worked with Peter on official works I did for both DH & DC. Nice bloke.

A couple more from the 1986 FF2000 race that was for not historic but not new cars ;)

As of the 12th April and one round on the Championship leader was Peter Ware in his Lola T580......

I can't let your 'pit crews' comment go without an honourable mention on Ian's wife, who was head of PR and hospitality at Kincraft. Very capable and supportive, and always ready to hand out the digestive biscuits to anyone who was close enough. As you say, it was a different world, and IMHO a much better one.
