These are by no means as iconic as some of the Thruxton stuff that has appeared on TNF of late, but I feel Special Saloons were rather taken for granted in their heyday. They were an almost inevitable feature of every meeting and it never occurred that I might one day miss them. Here are a few different shapes and sizes...

Jacobson had a few goes in the first B52 that year, after its introduction. I don't recall Fearless being involved with the project at all though at any point. He was a Lola man wasn't he?

Good pic of the wonderful Bartlett Royale RP32 there, h. This car pretty much killed off Royale as a serious player didn't it?

Mike Buckley used to get around in that RS2000 as I recall, though why I'm not sure, he was never really a contender. And I'm looking forward to seeing Derek W tonight, I think his Skoda was the fastest ever saloon around Mallory, some honour that. The Landlord of a brewpub near me is John Mawdsley, not the same chap surely?

As far as FF2000 goes yes probably. But I'd say the performance of the RP34 in testing put the nail in the coffin.
The RP33 and RP36 were semi-successful in FF1600 but Alan Cornock and Hugh Kleinpeter then went into sportscars where the RP37 Sports 2000 was hugely successful with titles both sides of the pond in the mid 80s.

Both cars displaying the kind of 'attitude' that made FF1600 so appealing to watch even when there wasn't a 9 car slipstreamer for the lead! Were they still on cross-ply tyres in 85? I have a theory that radial tyre technology has seriously reduced this kind of visible car-control (and thus the spectacle) over the past three decades.

I was sure I had a picture of Tim Jones from the Festival .....but alas I have searched in vain

However I can confirm that his start number was 224 and there is a picture of the car in the Festival Programme.

Not much help but here is the man himself in 1986 at a FF2000 race at Oulton Park sandwiched between Paulo Carcasci and Dave Coyne....

Slightly O/T, but related to cars and 1980, at Mere Country Club yesterday, there was a big silver Merc in the car park, regged 'MOD 1'. Yes I believe it was his.

For 1986 the car went to Denmark and was driven by Torben Pedersen
in 1987 to 1990 it was driven by Carl Bjarne Pedersen taking the Dannish Championship in 1989 and the Swedish "B" Championship in 1990

in 1991 to 1993 it was driven by Tommy Jespersen in the Dannish Championship
at that point it looked like this



Today it looks like this and is in need of full restoration

Y'know I saw the Who live at the Old Twisted Wheel in Manchester about 1965/66.
They couldn't quite prance about as much as that one, the stage wasn't big enough,

Phil, that Mahony shot is interesting- this being 1987, it's not his better-known RS500 of 1988/9, but a Prodsaloon Cosworth- He was one of a number of Prodsaloon regulars who fitted a set of slicks on their regular mounts and turned out for the British GP support round.

I'm not 100% on the accuracy of this, but from my notes the others were Robb Gravett (his car also had Arquati sponsorship and was a near-twin of Mahony's car- although possibly run by different teams), Mike Smith, Dave Morgan (all in Cosworths), Paul Harmer in an Astra GT/E and a number of Renault 5GT Turbo Cup runners (Roger Saunders did a fair number of BTCC races that season in a Renault, but a number of others turned out for the GP- Alex Postan, Niki Philips, Dave Grimshaw, Les Germain, and possibly a couple I've missed.

If you've got any more pics from that race, I'd be very interested to see them- at that time there were quite a lot of drivers who dipped in and out of the series over the course of the season, and a number of one-off entries particularly at the GP meeting....

The Group A Sierra Cosworths were quite different cars to the prod saloon versions. Mr Mahony had an example of each in the same livery.

That's pretty much my recollection- he seemed to appear out of nowhere in Prodsaloons in '87 with a Cosworth then stepped up to the BTCC the following season with an RS500 (and winning his first BTCC race), before pretty much disappearing from the scene as a driver after the 1989 season- Arquati sponsored both his Prodsaloon and BTCC activities

He later got involved in corporate hospitality activities around the series... Subsequent events, as in the link Phil posted are fairly well-known....

The Arquati sponsorship was extended to Robb Gravett's Cosworth mid-way through the '87 prodsaloon season I think- though AFAIK they were never actually team-mates as such, I think Mahony's car was prepared by Roger Dowson, whereas Gravett's was run by Graham Hathaway.

Thanks for those Phil- as you say, they illustrate the difference between Group A and Prodsaloon versions of the Cossie very effectively.

The shot of the Saunders Renault is a real bonus- I don't think I've ever seen a pic of this, apart from occasional ones in contemporary Autosport or MN race reports. Quite a few Renault 5 competitors had the occasional run in the BTCC around this time, but Saunders was the most regular, doing a fair bit of the 87 season. I won't swear to this without digging out old Autosports, but I think by the time of the '87 GP meeting, his 5 had possibly been developed into something closer to a 'proper' Group A version.

1986/7 are interesting years in the BTCC- the series was at a very low ebb by '86 after the Rover & BMW controversy in 1983/84 and the mid-'84-season pull-out by Austin Rover, and grid numbers were sometimes down to around a dozen at times.

During that period a lot of occasional and one-off entries dipped in and out of the series, particularly at GP supports, with everything from genuine Group A cars to various 'moonlighting' Prodsaloons and one-make series competitors, the occasional rallycar (the Peugeot UK rally team converted one of their Group A 205GTIs into a racer for Mikael Sundstrom to use in a couple of 1986 rounds), and if memory serves, on one infamous occasion even several of the Brands Hatch Racing School Escort XR3s got a run out driven by the instructors...

I think that is the Thundersports race supporting the '84 GP at Brands. Something from the old memory bank is telling me it's the Evan Clements Sports 2000 RP37 that went off, it's at Paddock I remember the shunt. Not sure but he may have been sharing with David Sears?

Great shot Phil- Somehow that's exactly how I always remember the Hodgetts Corolla- up on two wheels after a trip over the kerbs. Chris' driving style in the car always seemed pretty extrovert.... According to the notes of the result I've got, here it yielded another class win and 12th overall, on the way to a second successive championship.

Phil, the Prater Lola is a T594 I think, not 286. Was this the '83 Lovett Mazda car?? Anyone know who Chester Wedgwood was, he seemed to appear from nowhere around this time to drive in T'Sports. I wondered if it was a pseudonym??
