I was telling one of my friends several days ago about the Benetton team's beautiful paint scheme on the no less beautiful 1986 Benetton B186.

I was telling him that the team went as far as painting the side of the tires with several colors.
I've seen this done in Detroit that same year. This was for practice only if my memory serves me right.

Does anyone know where I can find some pictures and was it banned or something because I never saw this happen again.

I suspect that Goodyear might have had a word or two to say about it... I can't state specifically to your instance regarding the Benetton. However, a friend of mine who campaigned in Indy Lights for a couple of seasons had painted the letters on the sides of his tires orange to match his paint scheme at the Long Beach race... After a couple of practice seasons a representative from Goodyear and a race official met my friend in his pit and read him the riot act - They had him remove the tires right then and there.

He speculated that it was some sort of contractual obligation between the series and the series sponsors as nothing was written in the rules and regs about it. No explanation was given other than the threat of a DQ.

Naff - a slang term meaning "inferior or worthless; vulgar or tasteless; not stylish"

My god, those guys drove in between the front wheels, i guess that must have given them some kind of chassis balance!

I don´t actually like the wheels, the colors don´t seem so good, it´s good marketing though, goes along with the slogan.

They may well have, but I doubt it would have had too much effect - Benetton had a contract with Pirelli in 1986.
