The report in Autosport of the 1973 Brazilian GP reads that Clive Santo, British citizen and formula 5000 racer, had his seat ready to deputize for Peter Revson aboard the McLaren but did not eventually even practise.

Does somebody knows more on this "alternative driver" affair ?

Any bio information on Clive Santo (birthdate...) ?

Where is he know ?

Sorry for the typo of mine :

Where is he now ? (not : "know" !)

If a Teddy Mayer had thought of him as a likely reserve driver, I guess he was not so bad a driver, was he ?

Barry Boor wants to know the same while conjohn knows the story about Interlagos 1973.

The latter's source is AUTOSPORT. Do you want to know more about the happenings? I think they are sufficiently clear.

As Barry Boor, I'd like to know more about Clive Santo himself.

And from this not so uncommon case (some driver being ready to deputize for some other, but not even practising), to ask why they are not systematically registered as "alternative drivers" in our F1 compilations.

Did some TNFer try to draw a complete list of these comparable cases ?

From a first glance, I remember :

- Maurizio Flammini (Lauda's Ferrari), Jarama 1976
- Jean-Pierre Jaussaud (Jarier's Shadow), Zandvoort 1976
- Piercarlo Ghinzani (Cheever's Osella), Long Beach 1980
- Derek Warwick (Mass's Arrows), Montréal 1980
- Geoff Lees (Mansell's Lotus), Brands Hatch 1982
- Mario Andretti (Tambay's Renault), Detroit 1984 — I think it was yet discussed in another thread.
- Josele Garza (Martini's Minardi), Spa 1988
- Martin Donnelly (Piquet's Lotus), Rio 1989
- Johnny Dumfries (Herbert's Benetton), Rio 1989
- Nicola Larini (Berger's Ferrari) & Enrico Bertaggia (Larini's Osella), Mexico 1989

What do you all think of that ?

The rules for the 1974 Swedish Grand Prix required the nomination of a substitute driver:

Art 8 NOMINATION OF DRIVERS

a. A regular and a substitute drive shall be nominated before the closing
date for entries (art. 7).

(The full test of the regulations can be found here 1974 Swedish Grand Prix)

Always remember Clive Santo and his F5000 ShellSPORT Lola T332...

...inside the cockpit Santo invariably had a couple of pretty lurid colour magazine cut-out shots of large-breasted women to keep him company

God alone knows when he found time to look at them!

I took a photo of Santo talking to Fittipaldi E at Silverstone in '73, thereby giving a tenuous Brazilian connection. I remember taking the shot and wondering to myself how they knew each other, but I guess it must have been from F3 or something. In '75 Santo ran Ingo Hoffman in British F3, but of course none of this explains why or how he was in with a chance of subbing at McLaren.

However, he had raced McLaren F5000 chassis, knew the right Brazilian (helpful on the entry front), and had plenty of money...!

He was a stamp dealer, wasn't he?

They could well have met in Brazil,as both took part in 1970 FF Torneio. Hardly in the same class however. Emerson won the series whilst Santo was 12th (5laps behind) at Curitiba,11th (2 laps behind) at Fortaleza .
