Michael Schumacher is the only WDC currently active in F1. Apart from 1950, when the title was created and there were no title holders as of yet and 1951 when Giuseppe Farina was the first WDC, were there any seasons when only one title holder was in the field?

I've only got data from 1980 but since then we've had:
1992 - Ayrton Senna only
1996 - Michael Schumacher only
Also, in 1994 Senna was the only one and after his death there were none (until Mansell did a few guest appearances!). In 1995 it was mostly only Schumacher, although Mansell had two races for McLaren.

One World Champion in 1956, 1957, 1960, 1961, 1992, 1994 for the first three races and then no DWC for the rest of the year except for Mansell races. No DWC in 1958( except for the French GP) and no DWC either in 1959.

Talk about an abrupt transition for F1 - the Gang of 4 - Prost, Piquet, Senna, Mansell - dominated wins and titles for a long time then departed the sport over a short period of time.
