Graham Hill had a huge smash in the first BRM 261, when he aquaplaned off the circuit into and over a bank at Snetterton in 1964.

Apparently there were some 'award-winning' photos published in the Mirror at the time.
Does anyone have any copies?

A rather "enhanced"* Michael Cooper picture of this incident appears in "Life at the Limit"

*but obviously not "Photoshopped" :)

Last year, the Observer published a supplement containing what they reckoned were the best sports photos ever. One of them was a picture of this crash. From memory, it's taken as the photographer crouches behind a bank, and the shot was taken as the car went right over the top of him.

I think I may still have this supplement somewhere. If so, I'll be in touch.

That was the race where Graham wore that ludicrous revolving rain-removing visor.

Didn't seem to help much, did it? :lol:

Barry,
the revolving rain removing visor wasn't ludicrous, we used them in karting years ago and they were quite effective. The problem with them was that when you got to use them at higher speeds they had their own aerodynamic effect on your head!

Really I meant the look of it rather than its effectiveness.

There's another photo of the Graham Hill incident taken by Arthur Sidey of the Daily Mirror. Seemingly he was lying on the ground when Hill's car flew over the top of him as he took the picture. You can buy a print of it on some site or other, do a Google image search using "Graham Hill" Snetterton, that will bring it up.

Was this the crash which resulted in him having to wear his famous "gasket between the head and the block"?

======================
Edit, having got home ... the crash in question was later in the year, between the German and Austrian Grands Prix, while testing at Snetterton. :blush:

That's the one in the Observer. I found the supplement today, but unfortunately it's over A3 in size so too big to scan.
