As I'm sure many of you will know, it's M.T. de Filippis in practice for the 1959 Monaco GP (apparently):

I came across this photo years ago when FORIX wasn't a Pay To View site and noticed the car looked like it had been in a big wreck, gone to the panel beaters, and put back on the track. Can anyone tell me the story behind this car and why it looks the way it does?

The car is the Behra Porsche. It is Ms. De Filippis, but she didn't qualify for Monaco in 1959, so the picture was obviously taken during practise. As this was it's debut event, I suspect that the aluminium bodywork was just freshly completed and not yet painted, explaining the the rather odd appearance - those are grinding/sanding marks from the fabrication, not dents.

We have color photos of the car at Monaco, and you are absolutely correct - bare alloy.

Paul, let me known your e-mail address.

At Monaco Edgar Barth also turned with the car at Jean Behra's request.

The car was designed in Italy by Valerio Colotti of gearbox fame.

Is the Behra-Porsche Italian, German or French?

I've read that Jean Behra himself called it a Porsche-Behra.

This is in fact what it was called.

So the Porsche-Behra is a German car, modified in Italy and raced in French colours?

Behra didn't commission the car with future statisticians and list-makers in mind.
It was built in Italy from German and other component, funded by a Frenchman and entered by Italian and French outfits.
If you have to give it a nationality, feel free to do so

Wasn't the racing numbers order at the Monaco GP decided following the alphabetical order of the cars' nationalities (using the French names for nations) ? #4 would suggest Allemagne... Or was the numbering based on entrants rather then makes ? Not that I absolutely want to give this car a nationility, mind you. To me it is a voiture de Grand Prix niçoise, period :D .

In 1959, Jean Behra was driving for the Scuderia Ferrari. At Monaco, the Scuderia entered F1 cars, Behra driving, one, and a F2 one (Allison); so they didn't autorize Behra to enter his car under his name. As Behra had good relation with the Porsche factory, the car was entered by Dr Ing hcF Porsche KG, so it was a german entry! In the other F2 races, except Pau, Behra was not allowed by the Scuderia to drive his "special". After the ACF clash, Behra could again drive his car.
In France the car was knowned as the Behra-Porsche or the JBP (Jean Behra Porsche).
