Anyone have an entry or results list from 1940?

A Tripoli-Tobruk race in 1940??? Where do you have that from? I only know about the 1939 edition.

I know one was planned and that an entry list existed, but I'm not sure if the race ever actually took place or not.

Don´t think so because of the war. Also it still surprises me, that such a race was intended for 1940. Remember, the 1939 race was held as a "compensation" for the Mille Miglia, that was not allowed to be carried out. For 1940 they had developed a new format for this race, so there would not have been a need to go to Africa again.

But of course they could have planned it anyway.

In the past we've come up with two Italian racing calendars for 1940:

April 7th Targa Florio, Naples
April 28th Grand Prix of Brescia for the Mille Miglia cup (sports cars)
May 12th Tripoli GP
June 23rd Piedmont Cup, Naples (sports cars)
July 21st Stelvio Hillclimb
August 5th Coppa Ciano
August 15th Coppa Acerbo
August 18th Targa Abruzzo (sports cars)
September 8th Italian GP

Later, Alessandro contributed this from Auto Italiana:

1940 Italian sports car championship. Five classes: 750, 1100, 1500, 3000, 4500.

28/4 GP Brescia

Races which did not take place:
26/5 Circuito della Superba (Genoa)
9/6 Parma-Poggio di Berceto
23/6 Circuito di Napoli
7/7 Circuito di Biella
14/7 Trento-Bondone
21/7 Corsa dello Stelvio
18/8 Targa Abruzzo
25/8 Circuito del Carnaro

The British press, starved of racing news, seized on anything they could get hold of from the Empire, the Americas and Italy. Until June 1940, the latter was often provided by Johnny Lurani. I think it's unlikely they'd have missed this ....

1940 Events in Italy?

Gran Prix di Brescia 28 April 1940 (a.k.a. "XIII Mille Miglia" ... like it or not)

Gran Prix di Tripoli 12 may 1940 - There were 16 finishers, five non-finishers, two entries that were not mentioned as racing and one "reserve" entry. Ascari won in a Maserati 6CM (probably N. 1562) which was specifically stated to be "ex-Taruffi". All the cars were 1500cc Maserati (4CL and 6CM) plus four Alfa Romeo 158.

Targa Florio 23 May 1940

Circuito della Superba (Genova) not held 26 May 1940 due to "organizational difficulties"

June 1 ... Prohibitions were made against driving any vehicles using liquid petroleum fuels.

June 9 ... Parma - Poggio di Berceto not run ...

June 10 ... Italy entered World War II

June 23 ... Circuito di Napoli not run ...

Oooooops! Gigleux, You are correct of course. I took the information from my own 1940 listing but it was late, had been a long day and I failed to notice that it was not organized in finishing order.

Here is the listing that came from information collected primarily from Italian magazines/newspapers of the time as I recall. Haven't checked any modern compendium to see what more might have be added by others.

Unfortunately, formatting is lost in the transfer from my files to this bulletin board.
