Has anyone got the results for the 1969 season of Formula Ford?

I think Tim Schenken, Emerson Fittipaldi and a few others who went on to F1 competed that year?

Hi Gregor

Schenken did FF in '68. I have Emmo's results, will check later, sure he only did 5 or 6 FF races before going F3. I assume you are looking for your Dad's FF results in the Lotus 61L?

Emerson's FF results:

1969 Merlyn Mk11A-Rowland.
Emerson bought this car on arrival from Brazil on advice from Denny Rowland who did his engines. Painted a light orange, he sold it to Colin Vandervell mid-season when Jim Russell became his manager and got him an F3 car.
This Merlyn became known as the 'magic' Merlyn, going from Vandervell to Jody Scheckter in '71 then to Frank Sytner '72. Emerson never did the Jim Russell racing school course as many think, his first involvement with Jim was in F3. His only FF races with JRRDS were in the 1970 Temporada series, between his F3 & F2/F1 career.

Merlyn first test - Lydden Hill (on way to Zandvoort)
Zandvoort Q2, DNF engine blew. 7/4/69
Snetterton - Q1, 1st 4/5/69 ( car no.14 )
Mondello Park - 3rd 11/5/69
Brands Club - 2nd 18/5/69
Snetterton - entered but DNA, at Chimay instead 26/5/69
Chimay - Q1, 3rd 26/5/69
Snetterton - heat Q1 - 1st - Final - 1st 22/6/69 ( car no.4)
Vallelunga - 2nd 30/6/69
Oulton Park - Q2, 1st 5/7/69
Silverstone GP - Q1, 4th (date unknown, maybe 6/7/69)

1970 South America FF
JRRDS Lotus 61 (Temporada Series)
Rio - 1st 1/2/70
Curitiba - 8th 8/2/70
Fortaleza - 1st 15/2/70
Rio - 2nd 22/2/70
Interlagos - 1st 28/2/70

Thanks Andrew, that's great.

I have got Dad's diary from 1969 and he has written in all his races and results and I can't make out some of the hand-writing so I just wanted to cross reference it all.

Interesting about Emerson and his early career and also his FF car, that certainly went through a few good hands!!

Ok Gregor, I've looked for what I have on Gerry in FF, but not much!
Whilst looking I came across some other Emmo results and have edited the above list.
Also note the short 5 day gap between Vallelunga near Rome and Oulton! A long way with a car and trailer.

29/6/69 Snetterton. Gerry's single seater debut.
Victor Raysbrook Motors Ltd Lotus 61 ( designated 61'L' for large!)
Car no. 24 ( picture in Autosport 4/7/69)
1st Carlos Fabre Lotus 61
2nd Bob Taylor Alexis
3rd Paul Weldon Merlyn Mk11A
Gerry was battling in lead group when his gear linkage broke on the last lap!

13/7/69 Mallory Park
Heat 1, hit from behind at hairpin. No mention if he finished or qualified for final.

27/7/69 Snetterton, car no.8.
Knocked off at Riches first lap.

17/8/69 Brands Hatch, car no.79.
Heat 2 (same heat as Dave Walker, Ray Allen, Colin Vandervell, Bob Evans) no results.

24/8/69 Snetterton.
Combined F4 & FF race.
1st Keith Blaynee F4 Vixen
2nd Bob Taylor FF Alexis
3rd Gerry Marshall FF Lotus 61
Race stopped at 8 laps, F4 shunt at Russell.

Not a particularly happy time in FF going by these results!

Thanks Andy, with that and what I had previously this is now what I have managed to put together:-

29th June Snetterton - Retired
13th July Mallory Park Heat 1 - Retired
13th July Mallory Park Final - 7th Overrall
20th July Brands Hatch - 5th Overall
27th July Snetterton - Retired
10th August Snetterton - 4th
17th August Brands Hatch - TBC
24th August Snetterton - 2nd
29th/1st August/September Oulton Park - TBC

The 24th August Snetterton race is a strange one as I have a trophy saying Dad finished 2nd, so someone must have had a penalty/dis-qualified or it was because he was the 2nd FF car which I think is more plausible.

Just need to find out two more results, confirm what circuit at Brands they used (would assume it was the Club circuit), find out more about the heats and confirm the series/championship name.

Brands 17th Aug was club circuit.
Are you sure there was a meeting Brands 20th July? That was the Sunday, the day after the Silverstone British GP (always on a Saturday back then). Autosport has reports of Cadwell and Lydden that day but not Brands. That sunday (20th) was also the day Armstrong walked on the moon!
EDIT- looked again, found small Brands report, also on club circuit, ignore me!

Regarding the Snetterton trophy, the race was F4 and FF combined. Probably not enough entries for 2 seperate races so Gerry got the FF 2nd place trophy.

That's great, thanks.
You had me worried there!! I did double-check, just for info:-

19th July Colin Wood's (?) Wedding
20th July Brands Hatch - Lotus 61 5th (bad handling)
21st July Testing the Viva at Snetterton

That's what I thought, thanks. Also, was it called the British Formula Ford championship or anything (more like the South West FF championship looking at all the races at Snetterton!!).

I think there was just the one FF Championship back then, but most races were simply scratch races, non championship, especially the Snett ones.

In 1970 there was the Townsend Thoresen championship which was national, otherwise they were just club races, i.e. BARC/BRSCC etc.
I was at the Snetterton meeting on 24th August 1969 but my Vixen would not start for the F4/FF qualifying session, so I only did the Libre race. I remember Gerry Marshall being there, in fact I even remember he watched "my" race with Geoff Friswell ('cos Geoff told me afterwards) from Russell.
The F4 crash at Russell must have been the one in which Keith Norman broke his legs.
I also remember seeing Luis Bueno running at Snetterton in 1969 - with a Stirling Moss entered pale green Lotus 61 (I think) - he was the star.

It was the Les Leston Championship in 1969 & 1970
Luis Bueno drove a Merlyn Mk11A
Have championship charts for 69 & 70 if anyone is interested.Last 2 rounds both at Brands cancelled due to snow & fog.
Anyone know what happened to Geddes Yeates who was a leader at that time? 2nd in 70.

I've got a question concerning Formula Ford and I thought it might be best to put it in here. Does anyone have the results of the 1989 Formula Ford 1600 championships of Brazil and Great Britain, I'm especially interested in information about Barrichello ,Diniz and Coulthard who drove that year in FF1600. I've did some research in the internet on the Brazilian championship but could not find very much.

Here is what found out about the Brazilian championship :

final standings :

1. Tom Stefani
2. Andre Ribeiro
3. Ricardo Mattos
4. Rubens Barrichello
...

The championship probably consisted of 11 races.

grid of Taruma (?) :

1. Barrichello (no. 11)
2. Ribeiro (no. 7)
3. Stefani (no. 71)
4. Diniz (no. 2)
5. Mattos (no.72)
6. Ventre (no. 17)
7. Fogaca (no. 1)
8. Carneiro (no. 22)
...

Barrichello : Team Arisco, 1 victory (Florianopolis), 1st race - P3

Each kind of information is welcomed, thank you.

Other than it's Fogaça and a couple of first names (Marcello Ventre, Djalma? Fogaça) I can't add anything... :(

Thank you. I should have added the first names. Djalma is right afaik. And it's also Marcelo Carneiro, the 2nd one I found also as Marcelo but I don't know for sure how he is spelled correctly. But it doesn't matter anyway I think.

I attended the Oulton Park Tourist Trophy in 1968 (won I think by Hulme in Lola T70 and also featuring the short lived appeance of the Ford F3L).Memory suggests that the meeting featured either the first or one of the first ForMula Ford Races which I do rember was won by Ricardo Achcar.Sorry to be several years late in spotting this thread.

Rob29 - Thans for posting the final standings. I don't suppose you know how many points my late father scored? I had him having a copule of good results (see above) so am surprised he's not somewhere on there but I'm not sure how it worked with the heats and what the points scoring positions were.

Cheers Gregor! Your dad was certainly not rubbish,he was a great driver, but as I remember he was a big bloke and had trouble fitting in a Lotus 61!
I only have him taking part in one round of what seems to have been the only championship in 69.Mallory Park 13th July-10 lap heat+15lap final-29 cars present.seems to have been some dispute-Dave Walker crossed line first but was subsequently disqualified,so everyone else moved up one-so your dad moved up to 6th to claim his point.

Excellent pics GM!
A name you hear associated a lot with FF is Rick Morris. I don't think he was in it in '69, but certainly the very early '70s. 5 podiums in Festival finals..beat Senna, raced wheel to wheel with the best. Rick is 'Mr.Formula Ford'...and still at it!
This is Rick last weekend at Kyalami South Africa. He e-mailed it to me just now.

Gregor was the Lotus blue? I remember seeing an FF race at Snett and remember the commentator mentioning Gerry as he was in the lead group at the time - I noticed his name because he was always at the front in the saloons that my Dad was involved with. But I can't remember the colour. From the photos you posted in seems to have different liveries at each event! George Whitehead, another quick guy in special saloons with the WRA Anglia at the time also had a go in FF that year and IIRC went on to success later in single seaters in F.Monoposto.

I can't be 100% because all the photos I have seen are black and white abt I think it was red and white, like Gold Leaf Lotus F1 cars of the time. It's definitely that colour scheme now and is ambsoloutely immaculate, just had a full restoration (will check the pictures I have of it now when I get home to see if it still has the cutouts though!!).

Can you remember the colour of the Lotus Elan dad raced for VRM (Victor Raysbrook)? I wonder if that was the same scheme?

Wow, never seen that in colour!!

I must admit I don't know a great deal about VRM but if they did a lot of Lotus stuff then it would make sense to use the same colours you would think but it was 1973 when Dad race it so they could have changed colour schemes (especially with Duckhams sponsorship).

Hi Guys
I have a colour picture of the FF at home somewhere and I’m pretty certain the original car was blue and yellow.
I think due to some close racing the nose used to take some bumps and my dad got fed up with the resprays so they decided to paint it matt black for a time.

As for the Elan, that was built for David Brodie for the Blue Circle Cement Championships. David did campagne the car quite successfully for a season. It is possible that David was offered something better elsewhere but the drive went to Gerry, who won a few races but no championships, due to a very hectic race schedule.

Next guy to take the wheel was John “Plastic” Pearson who was our main competitor when Gerry and David did their stints as drivers. John drove a XK120 with a plastic body in Mod Sports.

So it was John Pearson driving our car against Jon Fletcher in his Elan. Great battles!!

I was a young lad of 12, who hero worshipped Gerry and the rest of his gang of mates. I used to sit next to Gerry, David and John when they did their winners parade lap around whatever circuit…….

Spoilt kid? You bet ;)

Spoilt kid? You bet ;)

Would love to see a colour photo of the Lotus if can scan it at all? Do you think it was the same colours as the Elan then?
I can't imagine my Dad ever hitting anyone from behind though!! :rotfl:

I didn't realise Dave drove the Elan before Dad, I thought it was after, you learn something new every day!!
I don't think Dad did win any races in it though, he qualified on pole for every race he did in it and I think he retired in every one due to silly things braking but I do only have four races recorded for him in it, three he retired in and the fourth I don't know the result of, maybe a win then; anyone got results form the 10th June 1973 at Silverstone??

Sounds like you had lots of fun though, three real characters plus your Dad. :drunk:

Hi Gregor
Your probably right about the “no win” in the Elan, I do remember Gerry getting a pole at Silverstone only to brake the gear lever at the start of the race and finish 30ft and 3 seconds later!!

I am going home this weekend so will see if I can dig the colour photo of the FF out for you. It was the same colour blue as the Elan. It is dads favorite colour and was on all his racing cars including a Fiat 128 coupe which Barry Williams drove in the RAC rally back in the ‘70’s

I have some early Elan pictures as well, before Victor went crazy with the yellow stripes. I think the car looked much better before the spoilers came on the scene.

We were Lotus dealers based in Watford, dad tried to get Chapman to put his hand in his pocket to give him some sponsorship but Chapman refused, so in an act of defiance dad dropped the word Lotus on the race entry sheet and it was known as the VRM Elan.

I would love to see some pictures of the FF as it is now.
And if anybody has any ideas of the whereabouts of the Elan, that would be great too.

Mike
Ps, There was, and is a certain amount of mayhem in Formula Ford, I think nose panels were there for the breaking.

Mike – That sounds about right, always silly things!! I think Dad said it was the fastest Elan in the country in Only Here For The Beer.

If you have got a colour photo that would be great, there’s a new book on Dad coming out (sshh, haha!!) and I only have black and white photos. Even if you could let me know who took it, that would be great.

I’ve only seen pics of the Elan how Dad raced it in 1973 so would be interesting to see what it looked like before. Was it an early car?

Interesting to know about your location, I always wondered how the deal came about and as Mum and Dad lived in Bricket Wood then so that makes sense, I think Mr Webb out intorduced everyone. I knew there was a few issues with Mr C, Dad said he was held him in quite high esteem by him and I always took it with a pinch of salt but maybe he actually did!!

If you PM your e-mail address I can send you the pics I was sent last year and the current owner is on TNF (I can pm you his name, unless he wants to make him self known on this thread??) and he knows all the history of the car after 1969 so he might be able to fill you in. IIRC it went to a museum in Holland/Belgium, I've got all the details at home. I don’t know about the Elan, maybe the Pearson’s might know more about that?

Dad did always say the only thing he hated about FF were all the hooligans around him or were hell-bent on destroying their cars!! Looking at the photos I posted it does look like a few front ends were used.

Original posts in a merged thread? Cor, I wish I could work out what it was now!! As my original thread was about 1969, other then Fittipaldi and Senna are there any other F1 world champions who competed (and won) in British FF?

Was it '77 he won the championship? Was he really considered a success in FF though? I must admit to not knowing much about the '77 (or what year it was) season; was that the year he damaged his neck?

In the late '70s there were three or four National FF championships. Race wins in any of these would be considered a success I'd say.

James Hunt won some races - although he was probably remembered best for his crashes...!

I believe that was in F3 in 1979. Don't recall Mansell in FF, and I don't think he won a championship though I may be wrong.
