the first GP de Monaco was in 1929
than 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37

In 1938 not a race
In 1939 not a race

In 1948 GP de Monaco
In 1949 not a race
In 1950 GP de Monaco
In 1951 no race
In 1952 a sport car race
In 1953 not a race
In 1954 not a race

Why there was a no race in 38, 39, 49, 51, 53 and 54
and why in 1952 a sport car race ?

In 1938 and 1939 financial reasons were claimed. In 1939 there probably had also been political reasons with the ever-present thread from Nazi-Germany looming over Europe after they had just swallowed Czechoslovakia and Austria. The military build-up in Germany created great tension in Europe.

The 1939 event had been planned for 16. April and was cancelled by the ACM on 24 February 1939 because "with consideration of the present situation (should probably mean: political) and the uncertainty regarding the expected participation." Without question, there would have been Mercedes-Benz and Auto-Union entries with the Italian participation not very sure because of the then present situation. They would have probably been absent and in this case the usually large Italian crowd would not have been there either. It seems that the reason was primarily of political nature.

Anthony Noghes, President of the Monte Carlo automobile club announced in December 1951 that the following year's Grand Prix would be changed to make it more interesting for the spectator and to give real enthusiasts with racing experience the chance to enter..

"Since the war," he said, "all these high speed races have levelled down to a race between the same two or three top drivess and the same two or three makes of car.

"to avoid this we are organising the Grand Prix on the lines of the Le Mans race. this means that the four-hour race on the famous Monaco circuit will be open to cars such as Jaguars, Allards,Aston Martins, simcas etc. The German Porsche is certain to compete, and thre will also be an entrry from soviet Russia if USSR authorities give permission".

I wonder whether uncertainty over the future of Formula 1 might have ha something to do with the decision.

Ws there also a sports car race in 1937, the Prince Ranier Cup?

The Coupe Rainier was run twice as a supporting race to the GP. The 1936 race was for voiturettes (1500cc single-seaters) and won by Prince Bira in one of his ERAs. The following year's race was indeed for sportscars, and winner was Laury Schell. Presumably his teenage son Harry was present...

The sports car race in 1952 brought to us the sad death of the great Luigi Fagioli after an accident in practice. He died 3 weeks later at hospital.

So teams and drivers dominating, and "ruining" the sport is nothing new.

Not sure how this works-clicked on link above-just provides a list of links to MGPs-click on '1929' and am linked to You Tube with message ;this item has been removed'
BTW I have a CD bought from AC Monaco on the history of the race.

I guess technically he was half-French, given that his mum was French.

Born in France, his mother was French would have been enough to have claimed to be French, but I believe he was always proud to be British. We in Britain should be proud that he wanted to be British.
