We've already discussed at length (and will probably/hopefully continue to do so) the various Formula Libre races in South America and Australia/New Zealand. However, apart from the odd race here and there, what is still really missing is a concise account of European Formula Libre Racing in the post-WW2 era, which was an important backbone of the racing scene well into the fifties.

I want to start this thread and the follow-up to summarize our knowledge about these races, which are not fully covered elsewhere. Here's a list of the races of which I am aware, to stimulate the curiosity and encourage those who already know some details to post them here.

The remark "full results available" means that I have more or less complete stats for these races, and I will post these results whenever somebody inquires about them. All other results are incomplete and any help is gratefully appreciated.

My initial response when I saw this post was, "outside the UK, there weren't any". I was forgetting the early postwar Belgian and German events, and the odd one or two others.
I can supply at least bare results (1-2-3) for most of the UK races, and may be able to add a few more. But I won't promise to do it before the weekend...

More interesting than naked results I believe is the background of these Formula Libre races. As we all know, the pre-war formula was 3 ltr s/c resp. 4.5 ltr aspirated, and the 1.5 ltr s/c voiturette class. Despite the fact that already before the war the future GP formula was announced to be 1.5 s/c and 4.5 aspirated, we have to see what was left over in the early post-war years.

The 3 ltr s/c German machinery was banned from international racing, and additionally partly unavailable (AU in Soviet Zone). Not to talk about the other problems Germany was faced with at that time.
Italy concentrated already before the war on voiturettes with the Alfa 158 and the Maserati 4 CL, some older 4 CM and 6 CM and a few 308 or even older 8C s/c Alfas and 8 CL’s / CTF’s survived also.
France was left with some more conventional machinery from Talbot-Lago and Delahaye, plus some even more outdated Bugattis.
Great Britain could only count on their voiturette ERA’s, and some rather mixed inventory of older foreign cars and specials.
New post-war activities like that of Gordini, Cisitalia, and Alta targeted the voiturette or even smaller classes, and except Ferrari in 1948 no “fresh blood” appeared in the Grand Prix class.

Based on this it was obvious that Italy and France backed the 1.5 / 4.5 ltr GP formula, and consequently most races in these countries had been held to this formula, as sufficient cars survived to fill the grids at least reasonably.
In Britain only a handful of private ERA’s plus a few Maseratis had been available, to fill up the grids some events had been organized as FL. Nevertheless such regulation couldn’t attract more than the sporadic 308 or 8C Alfas.
In Germany the situation was completely different. Banned from the international platform they had been free to create their own rules. Only very few pre-war cars survived the war, the AU’s had been out of reach, and Mercedes-Benz had other problems. At the 1947 Maipokalrennen at Hockenheim only 3 cars competed in the FL race, whereof only one larger than 1.5 ltrs. Acc. to my knowledge there was never a typical FL event in Germany, the races had been for sports cars of all sizes, and later for F2, and FL was never more than a demonstration run.

From 1948 on the situation was cleared, F1 now officially was 1.5 s/c resp. 4.5 ltr aspirated, and the new “voiturette” class was F2 with 2 ltr aspirated engines (believe the also allowed 500 cc s/c possibility never was really tried). Nobody seriously built new “big bangers”, so this meant that – at least in Europe – Formula Libre had only one sense: to “wear up” some outdated pre-war machinery. The 1948 Circuito di Garda was one of the few FL races, but except Farina’s Ferrari, which probably was equipped already with the 2 ltr s/c engine later used in Argentina, the rest of the grid was F1 or even F2. If the Farina Ferrari really was eqipped with the 166 s/c engine (we have no final proof for it), my personal believe is that this race was held for FL only for one reason: to allow Ferrari to test the Temporada engine in practice! And for the 1950 Czech GP, also officially FL, no car at all exceeding the F1 restrictions had been entered. In 1950 the German “FL” events disappeared, as international rules now applied. A lot of FL races in Britain in 1950/51, but I believe the “FL” was more political than technical, as most of these races had been club races, traditionally outside governing national or international regulations.

The situation changed in 1952, with world championship races held on F2 basis, suddenly a lot of F1 machinery was obsolete. However, there was no need to organize FL events for these cars, as they still had been real F1’s. Again a lot of FL races in Great Britain, but the refusal of the F1 rules for these events for sure had no technical reasons.

A serious change came in 1954, when F1 was restricted to 2.5 ltr aspirated. Still some of the old F1 cars like the BRM V16, the last Thinwall Special, and probably also some Ferrari 375 had been in use, so sporadic races for Formula Libre – meaning ex-F1 – could make sense. However, most of these “dinosaurs” meanwhile disappeared with direction South America and Australia / New Zealand, so the term “Formula Libre” in Europe only had traditional meaning.

Could we have a comparison with what was happening in North America at the time. I have always been enthralled with the pre-war ARCA stuff, but we generally read only of Sports Car racing in the road racing sphere in the States.
Was there any open-wheeler racing, and what about Canada?
And did much of the outdated machinery go to Africa?

Ray, these are certainly valid questions and I would like to have them answered as well, but rather in a seperate thread! I would like this thread to keep to its subject, to bring some 'Germanic' sense of order to The Digression... oops, Nostalgia Forum.

Thank you!

Michael,

Remember that it really isn't digression to a historian but rather an attempt to put that information in context....

This and the companion thread are great ideas. I had not thought much of the FL races until I saw the year end reviews in Autosport at the Watkins Glen Library. After initially not giving them much attention, I soon saw where they could lead.

Ray, there were FL races in the USA and races that skirted the edge until things really began to get better organized. I do recall the FL races at IRP where one year (1963?)Gurney won in a Lotus 18 - Climax FPF against a field of run what ya brung, by something like five laps. To a large extent, the US Fall Pro Races were FL events with the proviso that there had to be fenders. I think that in oval racing that various organizations stepped in to fill the breach and utilize the redundent machinery in some fashion.

Yes, there was even a NASCAR Speedway Division for a very short time, 1952-55 IIRC. They used redundant Indy chassis with stock block engines! Formula Libre, if you like...

I'm slowly compiling my data fines. To save duplication, I presume you have results of the early postwar races in Italy, France etc which weren’t offically F1 (or even FA) but which were not really libre either? Or shall I include them in my list?

David, what I have is basically Sheldon's books and a bit more info on the German races. I think it's probably fair to say that those of us who are interested in this kind of stuff already have the 'Black Books' or should anyhow try to obtain them, to avoid reiteration of already well done research (don't castigate me for that, anybody! :(). However, if some time we're done with what is missing in the 'Black Books', we can still pass that information on to those not lucky enough to get copies of these, although I would think that all volumes should still be obtainable.

The NASCAR Speedway Division was in operation for the 1952 Season and ran seven races, Buck Baker being the Champ. It was a direct result of both AAA running a Champ Car race at Darlington and Bill France's own interest in Champ Car racing.

# 1 Darlington, 10 May 1952, Buck Baker, Penny Mullis Cadillac Special

# 2 Martinsville, 25 May 1952, Tex Keene, Al Wheatley Mercur Special

# 3 Rochester, NY (Monroe County Fairgrounds), 30 May 1952, Wally Campbell, Campbell Ford 8 Special

# 4 Charlotte, 1 June 1952, Wally Campbell, Campbell Ford Special

# 5 Lakewood, 8 June 1952, Al Keller, WW Burroughs Cadillac Special

# 6 Heidelberg, PA, 15 June 1952, Tom Cherry, Cherry Mercury Special

# 7 Langhorne, 29 June 1952, Tom Cherry, Cherry Mercury Special

This is taken from Greg Fielden's chapter on the Speedway division in Rumblin' Ragtops: the Hisotry of NASCAR's Fabulous Convetible Division. Fielden just tossed it in as an extra and I had been looking for this information for years!

I can put together result for most of the post-1950 races, but I don't want to duplicate work other people might be doing. Are you covering the whole period of this thread David?

Yes I was aiming to do the lot, but will call a halt. Other people are able to move faster than I can, and a number of results I have researched are beginning to appear. I won't waste any more time till everyone else has made their contributions

For what it is worth. While doing research for my book on track roadster racing history, Roaring Roadsters #2, (shameless plug!) I ran on to a photo of a Swedish race that had to be Formula Libre. This was an International Race at Skarpnack Airfield near Stockholm in 1949. The photo shows the starting lineup containing, among other things, a couple of German Grand Prix cars, a 500 cc rear engined car, a couple of track roadsters and a car built from a wrecked Kaiser taxicab. Formula Libre---or just "run what yuh brung"?

Here you can find an excellent report about the Swedish Grand Prix in 1948, seems so that the Kaiser Special was present also one year earlier.

In my eyes a really interesting story, because it shows all the small - and big - problems race organizers and participants had to solve in those early postwar years.

Thanks, sat, this is really great! BTW your 1948 Schotten results are pretty much the same as mine - I want to know about the two missing ones! They are supposed to have been two Kleinstrennwagen, meaning small racing cars with 750cc engines. Anyone?

class for Formula Libre.

sat, you're right, most of these races were fairly national affairs, but interesting all the same. Of course, the international events were far more important, so keep them coming! And don't forget about the sister thread, all!

As mentioned earlier, I have not posted any of my data as there is no point in everyone supplying you with the same information. However, before I made this decision I had completed results for 1946/49, so you might as well have them. I have omitted those libre races whose results appear in the Sheldon Black Books and also, following your comment on another thread (or was it this one?), have not included any handicap races.

As requested, here's the results of the Formula Libre races in Germany 1947-49. In 1949, a 'German Formula B Championship' was awarded so that most races included a class for F2. Some races were outright F2 and are included for the sake of completeness, also the occasional hill-climb.

Time is the enemy...
There didn't seem a lot of point in me researching/collating data if other people could do it more quickly and easily. I can't now see a window till a couple of weeks hence at least. Remind me again if necessary!

I see that Darren Galpin's track data base doesn't have anything for the Winfield circuit. I offer these.

May I add my own word of welcome, Rob. If you've spent any time looking through this forum you will have noted how valuable we all consider the Black Books to be.
The 'junior' tag has nothing to do with age - it's something all 'new boys' (and girls) go through until they've made lots of postings. I thing the magic figure is 30

How about keeping the addenda online? It has been suggested a couple of times here on TNF...

And make sure Paul gets used to the Internet, it's not THAT difficult, is it? After all, he will soon find out that he's NOT the oldest on this board... :D ... and it's quite addictive, too!
