Michael, can you see the 1954 and 1955 Paris Cup as a FL race ?

This is not the complete results, nor the complete entry list but only what I know about those two events.

25 April 1954 Coupes de Paris (Linas-Monthléry), 16 laps

Entry list:
Duncan Hamilton (Jaguar C)
Auriac (Delahaye)
Blanc (Talbot T26 GS 110059)

Thépenier (Gordini T15 22GC)

Marcel Balsa (Balsa Spl)
Jean Judet (Ardun = Allard Spl)
...

Guy Mairesse was killed during the practice of this race. His great friend Georges Grignard decided immediately not to start. Blanc took the start but retired. About the race I only know that Thépenier won the 1500 cc class.

Entry list included:
Sportscars:
3 Maserati 2 L
2 Jaguar C

Rather a back door method of getting information I'm afraid but am just going through Roy Salvadori - Racing Driver book and charting the results posted at the end (unfortunately just mentioning his own results):

I think this will fill in a few of the blanks on your list but as I said, it's only Roy's results:

04/18/53 Snetterton 27 mi Ferrari Tipo 500 2nd
06/27/53 Snetterton 27 mi Connaught A-series 1st Ken McAlpine 2nd
08/15/53 Charterhall 10 mi Connaught A-series 3rd
06/05/54 Snetterton 27 mi Maserati 250F 1st
10/09/54 Snetterton 27 mi Maserati 250F 2nd
03/26/55 Snetterton 41 mi Maserati 250F 1st
04/11/55 Chichester Cup Goodwood 17 mi Maserati 250F 2nd
04/16/55 Charterhall 40 mi Connaught A-series 1st
04/30/55 Ibsley 31 mi Connaught A-series 1st
05/28/55 Snetterton 27 mi Maserati 250F 1st
08/01/55 Rochester Cup Brands Hatch 38 mi Maserati 250F 3rd
08/13/55 Aintree 51 mi Maserati 250F 2nd
07/22/56 H.W. Sear Trophy Snetterton 27 mi Maserati 250F 1st
10/09/60 International GP Watkins Glen 230 mi Cooper Monaco-Climax 2.5 litre 3rd
02/04/61 Invercargill Trophy Teretonga 75 mi Lotus 18-Climax 2nd
03/06/61 International Gold Star Longford 108 mi Cooper-Climax 1st

My apologies, haven't quite mastered the skills of cutting and pasting into this format. I have a bit more information in the way of a few lap times etc., if you want these I can send via email attachment.

Could anyone tell me who owned the Ferrari 625/500 that Reg Parnell drove during 1954 - and was it red?

For 1954 Reg Parnell bought the Ferrari 500 F2 car (chassis n°188) from the widow of Irish driver Bobby Baird, who was killed in a racing acccident at Snetterton in 1953 with the Ferrari.

After purchasing the car Parnell sent it back to Modena to have a 2.5-Litre engine fitted for the new 1954 GP formula.

The car proved to be one of the most successful single-seater Parnell ever owned. He was one of the dominator (with Stirling Moss, Roy Salvadori and Peter Collins) of the 1954 British racing season with this car.

He won (among other)
the Lavant Cup Goodwood(19 April),
the BARC F1 Goodwood (7 June)
the Crystal Palace Trophy (19 June)
the August Trophy Crystal Palace (2 August)
the Redex Trophy Snetterton (14 August)

Two more races that I came about recently:

1956-05-22, London Trophy, Crystal Palace, 1st Stirling Moss (Maserati), 2nd Paul Emery (Emeryson-Alta), etc
1956-09-16, NSCC Mallory Park, 1st Paul Emery (Emeryson-Alta), etc

Roger, would you be able to supply the missing results for this period? :)

Yes, i will do that, but it will take me a day or two. in the meantime here's a picture of Paul Emery winning at Mallory in September 1956. It didn't happen very often, and as you can see, it nearly didn't happen this time.

Thanks Roger and sat, you are stars! :) :) :) :)

One day I hope I'll find the time to include all this data into a format like the one Tony Kaye used for the South American races, but this will be a huge project and right now I don't have the time, unfortunately. But it's great to have the opportunity to pool the data here already, so that I am going to have a head start once I begin.

And maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to implement some of the ideas Wolf, Allen Brown and some others are mulling over in the 'Scribble...' thread...

sat and Roger,

It is extremely interesting to read those results especially since many of the names are well known to me through my periodical reading list of the period.

Most recently, I acquired John Tate's " A Gentleman's Diary of Motor Racing," and it presents many of the races you list. Watching "dental student," Tony Brooks drifting his Frazer-Nash through the turns at Goodwood. Tony Gaze in the HWM, Bob Gerard, Ninian Sanderson, Archie Scott Brown and the rest, names I knew from then, performing in races I read about as a mere stripling is amazingly refreshing.

If you havent seen these, you don't know what you are missing.

The results from Martin Kreicj's Site are contradicting in some details:

1. 76 Les Leston (GB) Cooper JAP 1100 10 0:13:40,600 Monoposto

2. 78 Leslie Thorne (GB) Connaught A type Ecurie Ecosse 10 0:13:50,000 Monoposto

3. 94 George Abecassis (GB) HWM Jaguar HWM 1

4. 75 Bill Sleeman Cooper JAP 1100 Monoposto

Interesting are the facts, that the times of the first two finishers are identical and that Martin has Also Abecassis in a sports on his list. And there was only one Ecosse-Connaught (A6), so only one - Stewart or Thorne - could drive her in the same race ..
So do we have two races? Or is Martin's result list a handicap result? Or what else? Any ideas?

Looks like one race
Not surprising there are discrepancies, when even the contemporary press couldn't agree ):
Both Autosport and MotorSport have Leston winning from the EE Connaught with Abecasis third, but Autosport has Stewart as the driver and MotorSport names Thorne. The monthly makes no mention of the fourth-placed driver but the weekly gives it as Sleeman.
My guess would be that one EE member was entered but a different one drove
As far as the third-place discrepancy is concerned, I wonder if sat engineered history to suit his personal needs? He wasn't interested in sportscars, so deleted the HWM?

I provided Martin with this information and can confirm that the sources are as David describes. The reason why I had Thorne in the EE car is that this is what the programme shows. As the 2 reports conflicted, I stuck with the programme. I guess someone could help by checking Autocar and Motor and we could go with the majority ?
The complete entry list was
71 O E Simpson Rover/BMW (?non stater)
72 R A Searles Cooper 1100
73 R Gibson Cooper Bristol
74 R Salvadori Mas 250F (non starter)
75 W Sleeman Cooper JAP 1132
76 L Leston Cooper JAP 1100
77 J Stewart EE C type (? non starter)
78 L Thorne EE Connaught

Firstly, there was only one Formula Libre race at this meeting, a 10 lap scratch race.

Regarding the Ecurie Ecosse Connaught, the programme lists this as no.78 driver L. Thorne. However the reports in Autosport, Autocar, Motor, Bristol Evening World, Western Daily Press and Wiltshire Gazette all refer to it being driven by Jimmy Stewart (as does Graham Gauld in Ecurie Ecosse). Only Motor Sport has the driver as Thorne. (Stewart was in the entry list in an EE Jaguar C, but this car is not mentioned in any of the reports for this race)

All the above reports have Abecassis third, with the exception of Autocar, which gives 3rd to Sleeman in a time of 14m 25s, making no mention of Abecassis at all. The copy of the programme I have has the results annotated to show 3rd #94 (i.e.Abecassis) in 14m 25s.

So it all depends what magazine you believe.

In my view the correct result would appear to be:

1 #76 Les Leston Cooper-JAP 1100cc 13m 40.6s
2 #78 Jimmy Stewart Ecurie Ecosse Connaught A-type 13m 50s
3 #94 George Abecassis HWM-Jaguar (sports) 14m 25s
4 #75 Bill Sleeman Cooper-JAP 1132cc

Reference Peter Stowe's comments I have David Murray's own typewritten notes as to who drove what and he has Jimmy Stewart down as the driver. Leslie Thorne only occasionally drove for EE and probably was unable to go to the meeting at the last minute and Jimmy was there anyway with the C type. ( The reason Ecosse had the odd single seater at that time was that at most meetings they attended there was usually a sports car race and a Libre race. Their old bus could carry two cars and so by taking a single seater and a Jaguar they collected two sets of starting money for the same delivery cost. They also had another bus at the time in case they entered three of their Jaguars.

There is a photograph in autosport showing the driver of the Connaught wearing a white crash helmet. Other photographs of Leslie Thorne show a dark helmet.

The Autocar report refers to J. D. (Bill) Sleeman's car as the Cooper-Nor-Jap once raced by Ray Merrick.

Presumably the engine was some combination of Norton and JAP.

Supporting Pete's and Graham's assertions, not that it is really necessary, the copy of the programme entry list that I have has a little arrow curling down from the name of Stewart to that of Thorne.

One can only assume that the "Motor Sport" rep was reporting from the beer-tent which was not uncommon in those days.

The Helsinki race in 1953 was actually a F1 race, even though most of the cars was Nordic Specials.
But the 54 race ( on May 9th) was a true FLibre.

This is not the complete results, nor the complete entry list but only what I know about those two events.

25 April 1954 Coupes de Paris (Linas-Monthléry), 16 laps

Entry list:
Duncan Hamilton (Jaguar C)
Auriac (Delahaye)
Blanc (Talbot T26 GS 110059)
Guy Mairesse (Talbot T26 GS 110057)
Georges Grignard (Talbot T26C DA 110051)
Thépenier (Gordini T15 22GC)
Gérard Crombac (Lotus)
Roger Gerbout (BMW Spl)
Marcel Balsa (Balsa Spl)
Jean Judet (Ardun = Allard Spl)
...

Guy Mairesse was killed during the practice of this race. His great friend Georges Grignard decided immediately not to start. Blanc took the start but retired. About the race I only know that Thépenier won the 1500 cc class.

Other starters included a Citroen Six saloon and an Arnott 500 (drivers unknown), da Silva Ramos in a 2.9 litre Aston Martin DB2 (fitted with a DB3 engine), someone called Keeling with another C-type and G Olivier with an "open Porsche" which had been "exhibited at the 1953 Paris Salon but with its four-camshaft engine exchanged for a normal 1500 push-rod power unit." Olivier had won the Coupe de Printemps at the same meeting.

1st Duncan Hamilton (Jaguar XK120C) 40'10.2" 93.84mph Race distance 100kms
2nd H da Silva Ramos (Aston Martin DB2) 1 lap behind
3rd Jean Thepenier (Gordini)

Lino Fayen (Talbot Lago T26C DA 110051)
George Grignard (Talbot Lago T26C)
André Pilette (Gordini T16 35)

The race, 16 laps
1- André Pilette (Gordini T16 35)
2- Duncan Hamilton (Jaguar D 3,4 L) (1st sport)
3- Picard (Ferrari 3 L)
4- de Portago (Ferrari)
...
8 (1st sport 2,5 L)- Nano da Silva Ramos (Gordini T15S 43)
...
10- Thépenier (Gordini T15 22GC)

Pilette had practiced in a 3.0 Gordini sports car, but substituted the GP car after his original mount developed trouble. Despite the change of car he was permitted to line up on the front row alongside Hamilton and de Portago. Of course, that would have nothing to do with the fact that he was driving a French car, would it?

Picard's Ferrari was a 750S, Pilette's winning speed 101.13mph.

All this from Boddy's "Montlhéry".

In the 1954 Coupes de Paris please forget that the car of Judet was an Allard. It was in fact a Balsa Sp with a Ford-France V8 engine lowered to 2000cc and fitted with an Ardun head hence its name Ardun Sp or FA (Ford-Ardun).

Never common, but I don't think the Merrick/Sleeman unit was the only one
Maybe they were more common in two-wheeld circles (of which I know very little)

I think I've heard of it being done... but I wouldn't say it was common...

I don't know the details, frankly, but I'd expect that there was a lot of engineering involved. You'd need a special piston, for sure, there's the valve train differences to cater for, potentially different stud pattern for head fixing.

Not something you'd embark on lightly.

But the 54 race ( on May 9th) was a true FLibre.

Tomas, I guess, the race was held in the Djurgard Park (usual venue, 2km tracklength?). Do you also have the number of laps for the 1954 race?

P.S. And about the Laurent-Ferrari, I assume, that it was in F1 configuration with 625-engine, as it was already 4 weeks earlier at Syracuse.

Yes it was of course at the Djurgard park track (2 km) just outside the Helsinki Olympic arena where they had the track and fields World Championships last week.
They drove the usual 25 laps.
Laurent of course had the upgraded 625 Ferrari. He was also first on the track, but got a one minute penalty after having rolled in the start. For some reason he seem to have gotten the message quite late. So when he started to speed up late in the race, his only reward was a third place.

I don't know the details, frankly, but I'd expect that there was a lot of engineering involved. You'd need a special piston, for sure, there's the valve train differences to cater for, potentially different stud pattern for head fixing.

Not something you'd embark on lightly.

Not to mention that the JAP used push rods and the Norton OHC. Are you sure about this?

The only description I can put my hands on quickly is that Merrick's 1132cc engine was built up by Robin Jackson in 1950/51 using Norton cylinder heads on a JAP crankcase. It doesn't say it was an ohc Norton...
