Three most obvious omissions are Onofre Marimon ('54), Peter Collins ('58) and Carel Godin de Baufort ('64). All threee in GP cars, on GP weekend, but only Collins in the race...

Udo, would it be too much to ask You to post at least year and the class for those drivers? Just for my curiosity's sake. :)

Sadly, 'tis a long list, but Nürburgring sure was the track...

Thanks, Udo. I would normally add a smiley in here (since I was brought up with notion that words 'thank You' should be accompanied with a smile, 'cept in quite special circumstances which do not apply here), but I have just agreed in Paddock Club not to use smilies for a week... And it would be a shame to falter in my intentions within five minutes.

There was also a woman driver killed there a couple of years ago in one of the long distance races , but her name excapes me at the moment. I believe she suffered a puncture on the run down to Schwedenkreuz and as she pulled of the track was hit by another car , dying in the resulting fire.

Carola Biela I think she was called.

I have Sunday 29 July 2001 for Richter’s fatal crash.

Does anyone have a date for when Hans Klenk crashed and was injured at the Nurburgring in 1953? I believe he did not race again.

Was Klenk's accident in a private test? (He raced at the GP meeting in August)

My source is Paul Frere's "My Life Full of Cars".

Without going back to the book to check, I believe Frere says that Klenk crashed and badly fractured a leg at the Nurburgring "in 1953" and did not race again.

When Mercedes-Benz planned their driver setup for their future Formula 1 team in 1953 they became interested in Klenk, who had just shown a great performance in the Avusrennen. So they invited him for a test drive in an open 300SL on July, 22nd, 1953.

Translated from Reinald Schumann (Motorsport in Deutschland 1945-54):
"As usual under Neubauer´s regie the sole criteria was to set the fastest lap time, nothing else. When it was Klenk´s turn the brakes of the car were already worn out, but nobody had noticed that. So when Klenk arrived at the Fuchsröhre he found himself without any brakes, as the brake block had been worn up completely and the aluminium brake shoe melted away literally. A marshal told afterwards, that he had seen something streaming out of the front wheel (!). Klenk was without brakes, he knew, that he was too fast to take the corner, but he tried the impossible. The 300SL left the road and flew over the banking and Klenk was lucky, that he was thrown out of the cockpit. He sustained numerous fractures and a brain concussion and had to remain in hospital for a long time after that."

Interesting...
I have a note of Klenk racing a Borgward in the Rhineland Cup on 2 August - I wonder if his entry was talen over by someone else, but that fact overlooked in the reports?

The Rheinland Cup is certainly the supporting sports car race of the 1953 German Grand Prix. If so, then the Borgward driver lineup was Theo Helfrich alongside Karl Günther Bechem, as both the regular drivers, Klenk and Brudes, were injured at that time. They finished 2nd - 3rd (Bechem in front of Helfrich) in that race.

I think the reason why Klenk appears in the entry list is simply the fact, that his accident happened when his entry had already been made.

My info too is that Bechem and Helfrich were 2nd and 3rd - but it also says Brudes and Klenk retired the other Borgwards. Looks like someone got the entries and actual drivers mixed up, and with Brudes and Klenk not appearing in hte list of finishers, assumed they must have retired. But then that is an assumption on my part :D

Just a little note on the name of the race:

"Internationaler AvD Rheinland-Pfalz Preis"

Rhineland Cup could be translated as Rheinland Pokal which was not the correct title of the race.

AFAIK there were regularily only two Borgward entries that year at the races, so your assumption would fit into this picture.

I think Walter Cadzek (sp?) also lost his life on the Ring during one of the late 70s 1000km Rennen.

Hi Udo. Sorry about Czadek (I knew I did not get the spelling right !), I somehow missed it. Anyway, nice to be back ! I'll write to you very soon about our stuff and all that.

Walter Czadek's date of death doesn't make sense to me. It was supposedly the day before the Nurburgring 1000, but 30 June was a Monday. Can anyone explain?

Suppose the day of the accident was BEFORE the race day, but he died on Monday.

That's a distinct possibily that I had considered, but it requires confirmation.

Using Udo's format:

Carola Biehler, August 12th 2000, 6-Stunden-Rennen Veedol Langstreckenpokal, Ford Escort 2000

Richter's crash happened on August 4, 2001.

In mycopy of Autosport the date of the race is June 1st and the report gives the impression that the teams went to the line knowing Walter died... which might make it May 30th/31st 1975 ?? It actually says - he died of injuries caused by ill fitted seat belts and died shortly after.

Thanks for coming back to this matter after all this time, ghinzani.

At least we are within a day of the actual date now. May 31 looks like the best guesstimate, based on the evidence we have so far.
