Having read the thread about the most exciting races seen on TV, I noticed somebody mentioned South Africa 1978, and Peterson stealing the win from Depaillier. I'm just trying to think of other last lap lead changes. Of course there was Rindt taking the lead from Brabham at Monaco and Brands Hatch 1971. There is Monaco 1982, Canada 1991 and Spain 2001. Anybody care to add to the list?

Ah, there's the first Formula One race I ever saw in the flesh (and in the rain!), the 1962 International Trophy. In fact, that was more of a last six feet lead change.

One thing I don't understand with South Africa 1978; is Peterson seemingly waving Depailler by on the last lap, until he passes him again to win

Italy 1967, 1971 -
Can we add Brazil 2003?
And, of course, Austria 2002 and the USGP 2002 :drunk:

I'm writing this at work so these are from memory (and probably wrong)

Monaco 1933 (Varzi from Nuvolari whose engine blew)
Reims 1953? (I think Fangio was leading into the last lap - but I could be wrong)
Imola 1982? (Was it on the last lap that Pironi went ahead?)

I think D-type's memory serves him right, even at work!
according to my information Monaco 1933 and Imola 1982 are very correct, only in Reims 1953 Hawthorn took the lead three laps prior to the end.

But the one that really stands out for me is Nigel Mansell in Montreal 1991, or have all British members blocked this one from their memory? :p

You assume we all follow F1 in a purely nationalistic manner?

I watched it live on TV, and I don't remember Peterson waving Depailler by. Where did you get that from?

I think you misunderstand me, Marcel. What I meant was, not all of we British were part of the Mansell Mania brigade, as whipped up by our tabloid press.

No, David, I know exactly what you mean since sometimes I feel like I'm the only Dutchman who doesn't think Jos is the Boss.

I was just surprised that that one wasn't mentioned, because it sure was drama in 1991 and for me it was the first image that came to mind when I read "last lap lead changes": Nigel Mansell in Canada.

Last lap lead changes?

Probably 75% of all the IRL races for the last half dozen seasons.

I wonder if the 'waving' was more fist shaking? "In the closing laps the Tyrrell began to trail smoke but Andretti could do nothing because with three laps to go he had to pit for more fuel. This left Peterson to get ahead on the last lap after a dramatic wheel-banging battle with Depailler. The Frenchman finished half a second behind the Lotus."

My bad. I looked at the clip again, the one waving so Hector Rebaque in his Lotus Cosworth.

Didn't Brabham follow up his Monaco slip up by grasping defeat from the jaws of victory in Britain?

There were a few late lead changes in the fuel economy era too, weren't there?

Yes, Rindt passed Brabham on the drop down to Clearways on the last lap.

OK, I have a very poor quality copy of that clip, not good enough to tell if Rebaque is waving or not. But Peterson and Depailler don't actually pass him, they are still behind him at the flag.

Bruce McLaren at Sebring in 1959.

And Chris Amon at Cleremont-Ferrand in 1972.

Actually, I may have dreamt that that last one.

As for Brazil, Fisi took the lead in the last lap that counted.

1908 American Grand Prize. Generally regarded as a de facto dead heat between Wagner and Hémery, yet still another one (Nazzaro) was leading on the penultimate lap!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the 1959 Daytona 500

I suppose you could say that the lead changed after the last lap
