I have just seen this on Amazon...
"The Forgotten Races: The Non-championship Formula 1 Races 1966 to 1983"
Has anyone already purchased a copy?
Is it worth adding to my collection?
Thanks

I hope to receive a copy soon. It may contain some of my photos...the first I have ever had published.

I thought that, too. It's Chris Ellard

Let me introudce myself. I am Chris Ellard the author and one of the publishers of The Forgotten Races which is a forthcoming book.
With Don's permission perhaps I can provide some further commercial information.
The Forgotten Races covers the major non-championship F1 races of the three litre era. It is, essentially, a privately funded work which will be limited to probably around 500 copies. In style it uses Mike Lang's Grand Prix! series as a template so what you have, in essence, is a race-by-race account of the fifty-two non-championship events that took place between 1966 and 1983.
The book is a hardback, it runs to just over 200 A4 sized pages and includes a results section. There are some 175 pictures which are mainly B&W although these are supplemented by two colour sections with about 20 colour images. Hopefully the strength of the book will be in the photographs, many of which are previously unpublished. Although the main supliers such as LAT and Sutton's have provided some of the pictures we have ferreted out many from private collections. Amongst their number were, indeed, both David Beard and Barry Boor who very kindly gave their consent for the inclusion of images taken at Silverstone and Brands Hatch respectively. Thanks chaps.
Mike Hayward and Gary Critcher were also very helpful in throwing open their extensive picture archives and e-mailing me some wonderfully evocative images. Budget constraints meant we had to discard many which was a real shame. However Mike tells me he is making all of his available to a wider audience through his own website which is well worth a look.
Some of you have raised a question about the sketchy information that appears on Amazon. Let me just clear this one up. We never requested that the book appear on Amazon's website. It seems that when we applied for the ISBN (through Whitakers) Amazon picked it up. Whether they thought The Forgotten Races was book about some lost tribe in Papua New Guinea I cannot say but those who have pre-ordered, anticipating it might be, are going to be in for a surprise especially when they see the cover image ... Ronnie Peterson spinning backwards in a snowstorm!!
Amazon were informed a while back about two significant changes to (a) the price and (b) the date of publication. The cover price is £ 19.99 (and not £ 18.00 as currently stated) also the publication date is set for August (not April as currently stated). I can only apologise for this and as a gesture of goodwill will honour the price for those who have already pre-ordered through Amazon. I have demanded they make immediate changes to this effect. As I say this is a self-funded book and I cannot absorb any further losses on this. Sorry.
Advertisements will appear in the UK motoring press very soon and the book will be available either directly from myself (chrnev@ntlworld.com) or from Simon Lewis Transport Books. Many of you will, I am sure, already know Simon and have dealt with his wordwide mail order book business before. He will be able to deal with both UK and overseas orders smoothly and efficiently.
Many thanks, Don, for allowing me to clarify these points.

My first post on this site, Chris Ellard, author of THE FORGOTTON RACES recommended it
(and a quick thanks the Chris for his kind words about me. )
Having seen the pre-production version of this book I must say, hand on heart, that I thoroughly enjoyed it , both as a history and a big nostalgea trip! It certainly takes you back to the days of shivvering at a sub-zero Silverstone, wondering just why you bothered, then forgetting all your woes at the sound of the first DFV being fired up in the pits for the morning warm up. Happy days!
Many of the photos are unusual and those showing the utterly dreadful weather conditions at the 1978 international trophy almost have you reaching for the brolly ! My god it really was tipping down and no mistake! I can't imagine for a moment that the race would have gone ahead in today's safty obsessed climate but then we have a different defination of "hero" these days....
Some of Chris comments are also quite pithy and "tell it like it is" which is always a good thing.
Best of luck with it Chris.

Second, also let me join with Simon by placing my hand over heart and saying just how great it is to not only finally have a book about these events, but a Good Book about these events. Chris has taken a great deal of time and effort to develop a book that does more than just offer up some information on the events. He sets the stage, tells the story, and then provides the data.
Should this book go well, perhaps we can convince Chris can fill in the blanks prior to 1966....
Also, keep in mind that Chris is doing this on his dime -- ah, 10 pennies. I admire anyone whose attempts such an undertaking in this day and age.
I had planned to shamelessly plug this book in an upcoming RVM and then in a companion thread here until Rob beat me to the punch. I recommend that you queue up for this book. It makes a nice gift for younger F1 fans to give them the "rest of the story."

You are not kidding- I well remember getting soaked to the skin seeing all and sundry spinning into the catch fencing at Woodcote. The race was won by an unknown called Rosberg....
Welcome to TNF too for Simon Lewis. I've dealt with Simon occasionally over the years and can recommend him

I do think there must be a book worth writing on UK F5000 to Aurora, 1969-80. Perhaps there's an ex-Journo out there who could help me (MCS????)

Like Chris's book it's an example of a passionate enthusiast writing and publishing something he cares about off his own bat. I think at present the F5000 book (to which I contributed some of the photos) isn't available through the usual sources but can be obtained either from Wolfgang himself Germany or from me in Britain.
He also wrote a companion volume "Formula A and 5000 In America- Race by Race" which is just about to come out in a second edition with more photos.
That does leave a gaping hole for a book on the Aurora-Shellsport Group 8 era 1976-80, and you could extend that to the rather thinly contested 1982 F1 series won by Jim Crawford in an Ensign (remember 4 cars on the grid at Oulton...?) that would complete the story.

Anyway, I bought Wolfgang's US book direct from him. Very good format, 1 page summary per race, with a page/page-and-a-half summary per season. Pics would make it better, none in the first edition.
This (aswell as Allen's site!) filled a lot of gaps for races not covered by the UK press at the time.

And to answer Dan's question, yes he writes very well. The book is succinct and to the point (as space limitations permit) so it's not a magnum opus as Doug Nye might produce but it certainly captures the era very well.
The type of paper used means the photos are not reproduced to the quality of more mainstream books and many are amateur to start with so you have to make allowences. This is self funded after all and art paper and photos from major archives cost, big-time. But it's a damn good book for all of those with fond memories of thundering Chevy powered single seaters.
Regarding the F5000 American book, here's the details I recieved last week -
2nd edition 211 pages, 167 b&w pictures to be published "in about a month"
