The Formula 3000 gang at Pau in 1985 (photo taken from „Grand Prix international“, no credit given) :
Posted Image

Can anyone identify all 23 chaps? (I’m pretty sure in the case of 12 of them.)

For this purpose I have numbered them (although I simply do not know why especially # 10, 11, 15, 19, 20 & 21 are barely visible  ).

PS.
@ Twinny: Would you please hold back in order to give other people a chance.
I’m convinced you would supply the names in no time.

Er, ok Reinhard!

Am I allowed to say that Thack is still wearing the same pair of overalls he used in 1982?

You are allowed to say anything you want. You are the host after all.

# 9 refers to the elder one behind M.Ferté (who is # 10). # 14 refers to the guy behind Pirro (who is # 15). As I said # 10 & 15 are barely visible. I will have to work on my Photoshop skills.

Pau Grand Prix was raced on May 27th 1985.
There were only 15 drivers; this is result:
  • Christian Danner (March 85B) 72 laps, 1'30'28"63 - 131,781 km/h
  • Emanuele Pirro (March 85B) 1'31'10"36
  • Lamberto Leoni (Williams FW08) 1'31'28"25
  • Olivier Grouillard (March 85B) 1'31'32"13
  • Philippe Streiff (AGS Jh20) 71 laps
Retired:
  • Mike Thackwell (Ralt Re20)
  • Alain Ferté (March 85B)
  • Michel Ferté (March 85B)
  • John Nielsen (Ralt Re20)
  • Mario Hytten (March 85B)
  • Juan Manuel Fangio (Lola T950)
Did not start:
  • Jean Philippe Grand (March 85B)
  • Ivan Capelli (March 85B)
  • Gabriele Tarquini (March 85B)
  • Guido Daccò (March 85B)
So I think all drivers in this list should be in the pic, but now I have no time to check.

Ciao,
Guido

14 is probably either de Chaunac (ORECA) or Mike Earle (Onyx), 17 looks like an AGS official (Gitanes logos). Mario Hytten has to be in there somewhere, should be wearing Oblitrading logos, or maybe he's 7???

Thanks for reminding me that I have no memory for faces - I worked with Mario Hytten in 1986 and I'm struggling to reecognise any of them!

Judging by their clothing the un-identified driver is no. 12, but doesn't look to be Mario.

1, 4, 6, 7, 9 , 11, 14, 17 look to be the non-drivers.

Cesare si Gariboldi non Garibaldi......
yes he was Capelli team manager (Genoa Racing), went on with Ivan to March/Leyton House F.1, sadly died in a road car accident

I had a feeling I was wrong on that. Sorry  Cesare Garibaldi was a mathemetician I think.

I'm assuming from your subsequent post I got the right guy though? :)

NoNo! :-)

The "very famous" Garibaldi was Giuseppe, not Cesare:

He's known here in Italy as "L'eroe dei due mondi" (the hero of the two worlds-the European and American continents), he was some kind of a patriot/revolutionary....

The man that united Italy. I know about that Garibaldi. There is a Cesare Garibaldi who was a mathemetician and engineer born in the mid 1800s, and I have no idea why his name has stuck in my mind. :

Well, this is what I can say or suppose:

1. Cesare Gariboldi (Capelli's manager)
2. Philippe Streiff
3. Lamberto Leoni
4. Bob Sparshott (BS Automotive) ?
5. Christian Danner
6. Pierluigi Corbari (Corbari Italia)
7. maybe Sanremo Racing, Dacco's or Grouillard's manager ???
8. Guido Dacco
9. Ron Tauranac (Ralt manager)
10. Michel Ferté
11. maybe Hytten's manager ???
12. Mario Hytten
13. Mike Thackwell
14. Mike Earle (Onyx)
15. Emmanuele Pirro
16. Juan Manuel Fangio III
17. Henri Julien (AGS principal)
18. Jean-Philippe Grand
19. Alain Ferté
20. Gabriele Tarquini
21. Olivier Grouillard
22. Ivan Capelli
23. John Nielsen

The drivers (2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23) have all been correctly identified. # 12 definitely is Mario Hytten.

1, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, 17 should be team personnel.
# 1: Cesare Gariboldi (Genoa) – 4 votes are good enough for me
# 4: Bob Sparshott (BS) – 1 vote, hmmm
# 6: Pierluigi Corbari (Italia 3000) – 3 votes are good enough for me
# 7: mystery man
# 9: Ron Tauranac (Ralt) – 2 votes, I agree
# 11: mystery man – I guess it could be Peter MacIntosh (PMC)
# 14: Mike Earle (Onys) – 3 votes are good enough for me
# 17: Henri Julien (AGS) – 3 votes, but I don’t believe it is him. The guy in the picture is much younger than Monsieur Julien should have been in 1985. I think it could be Christian Vanderpleyn (also AGS).

Teams which should be represented are ORECA (Hugues de Chaunac anywhere?) and Sanremo (Alberto Colombo anywhere?).

Okay, Twinny, it's your turn to solve the riddle.;)

Just a thought because # 7 is in civvies as is # 20 (Tarquini). Could it be Roberto del Castello, driver of Sanremo March (car # 33) who is usually listed as "dna"? Maybe he was there at Pau nevertheless.

I think #1 is actually de Chaunac, and I agree that #17 is Vanderpleyn. #9 is definitely Tauranac and #14 is Earle.

Funny all the pics of Ferte, Alain that I have seen from that year he appears to be wearing trainers instead of race boots - surely the scrutineeers would have complained? Or was it just his race boots were so old and knackered?

The 17 is definitively neither Henri Julien, nor Chritian Van Der Pleyn.
Could be a "Gitanes" man ???

Agree with Twin Window. No.14 is too tall for Bob Sparshott
