............................................................................................................................................................
Only 16 cars took the green for the 40-lap event, as Mike Andretti got the jump on pole winner Roberto Moreno and led for 12 laps. After a few probing moves, Moreno took Andretti at turn One. Andretti finished second, some seven seconds back, with a sour-sounding engine.

A race that looked close wasn't, thanks to a one-minute penalty for a jumped start. Rogelio Rodriguez mis-timed his standing start and jumped from fourth on the grid to an apparent lead, with Tommy Byrne and polesitter Michael Andretti in hot pursuit.
Andretti crashed out of the race on the second lap, and Byrne led through lap seven when a blown engine put him out. Four laps later Mark Moore passed Rodriguez and the two ran together for the rest of the 31 laps, but Rodriguez was bumped down to sixth in the final order by the penalty. Among the other non-runners at the finish were Roberto Moreno's Ralt (engine), Dave McMillan's new Dart (head gasket), and the Ralts of Hubert Phipps and Desire Wilson (both engine).
In Formula Mondial points, John David Briggs leads with 39, followed by Moreno (32), Mark Moore (31), Michael Andretti (24) and Dan Marvin (23).
RESULTS
1.Mark Moore
2.John David Briggs
3.Norm Hunter
4.Dan Marvin
5.Joe Sposato
6.Rogelio Rodriguez
7.Carlos Bobeda
8.Patrick Shelby
9.Mike Rosen
10.Riley Hopkins
11.Peter Hastrup
12.Jeff McPherson
13.Rod Cusumano
NOTA :
Points must be something like
1st=30 / 2nd=24 / 3rd=19 / 4th=15 / 5th=12 / 6th=10 / 7th=9 / 8th=8 / 9th=7 / 10th=6 / 11th=5 / 12th=4 / 13th=3 / 14th=2 / 15th=1
So, Roberto Moreno with 32 points was certainly classified 14th after his win in Round 1.

The third round of the CASC’s Formula Mondial championship belonged to Michael Andretti from pole to checker. He was chased early on by second qualifier Roberto Moreno, but in the closing laps Andretti stretched out a 24-second margin, setting a lap record in the process. Third starter Ed Pimm got a poor start and struggled up as far as fourth before losing an engine late in the race. The race was relatively clean, with the most serious incident that of Joe Sposato, who spun off course, lost a wheel and flipped, ending up in a tire wall. He was uninjured.

CASC Formula Mondial updates
Star of the two "Grand Prix" rounds of the North American Cup Series for Formula Mondial (ex-Formula Atlantic) was clearly Roberto Moreno. The Brazilian took pole at both races, led for three-quarters of the distance at Detroit and led wire-to-wire at Montreal.
Moreno's canadian win was decisive. His qualifying time was two full seconds better than second starter John David Briggs, and only Michael Andretti showed similar speed in the race. Still, even at the finish Moreno was pulling away from Andretti, setting fast lap with three circuits left to go.
A week earlier at Detroit, however, Moreno's early lead was eaten away by Josele Garza and Mark Moore. As the pair moved past, Moreno spun his Ralt into a tire wall and retired on the spot. Garza then held off Moore and won by just under one second. Andretti was also a non-finisher at Detroit. A first-lap accident dropped him back, he charged through the field to set fast lap and attack Moreno, but a passing attempt was botched and he spun out of the race on lap 24.
With three races left in the series, Andretti retains the points lead, but Moreno, Dan Marvin and Briggs are not far behind.

Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wis., July 16
Disaster almost struck Michael Andretti's quest for the series championship when he spun out of the lead in Turn One on the first lap. It takes good luck to make a winning racer, though (ask father Mario), and five laps later a sudden rainstorm put the track under caution. Michael closed on the field , and in the final laps he picked off all but the winner, Roberto Moreno.

CASC Formula Mondial season wraps up
Although the expected season-ending "world series" of Formula Mondial didn't materialize, the North American rounds still provided excellent racing. The two final rounds saw Michael Andretti take the series championship, along with rookie honors, when he won the 48-laps contest at Trois-Rivieres. Andretti started from the pole and led start to finish in the Ralt dominated race. The only other driver with a serious shot at the championship, Roberto Moreno, droppped out after just seven laps with a broken shift linkage. Second went to Josele Garza, but the hardest charge of the race belonged to John David Briggs. He dropped to last on the first lap, then moved up through the field while setting fastest race lap. But while trying to pass Garza on lap 23, he crashed out of the race.
The following weekend at Mosport, it was Moreno's turn to dominate as Andretti had, taking pole, fast lap and the win. Andretti started second and led the first two laps, but Moreno swept by and faded into the distance. Andretti pitted for a flat late in the race, rejoining a lap down but without losing position.
Round 8 - Trois Rivières - Sept. 4

I would be pleased to grant permission for the use of my Donohue/Penske/Lola photograph. I'm happy that you found it interesting. I have a few other pictures taken the same day, not particularly good, and I also still have my program from the event, which was autographed for me by Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue.
Edit: As shown in the "Pictures from the Paddock" thread, that image is somewhat cropped from my original. If you wish to see the original, send me a PM with your email address.

I'm also surpised that the Elkhart race report omits the real reason Michael (and Roberto) went off on the first lap-they were playing chicken, waiting to see who'd brake first. By the time one of them blinked, they were both off! They finished lap 1 about 30 secs behind everyone else as I remember.
Best part of the Elkhart story would be Andretti, Briggs, et al had been up there testing-someone told me Briggs had done 4 days there! We, on the other hand, were flat broke and it looked like Moreno would have to skip this round too-we'd already missed an earlier round due to finances. Finally, on the Wednesday before the weekend, I volunteered my Shell credit card and told Kerry he'd better make good when/if we made any prize money. Off we went-me, Warwick Aitken and John Mattison, in the single cab dualie and 5th wheel. (No semi's in those days.) All day and all night from L.A. to Elkhart.
We arrived on Friday about 3:30 p.m., just in time to unload and beg (from whom, I forget) the likely gear ratios for Elkhart. Then we went to Siebkins of course.
This particular event was a 1 day affair-practice, qualify and race all in one day. I think Roberto qualified 2nd-not too bad considering he'd never seen the the place until that day. Minutes before the race, Warwick finds a full 3rd of the clutch mag-ring hanging out of the bellhousing! With no time to fix it, he tells Moreno "You MIGHT get 1 start out of the thing. If it works, don't use it for the rest of the race."
Well, it worked and off they shot. When Moreno was late coming around, we figured the clutch had left him stranded and were just about to pack up when he and Michael finally came past.
Long story short, Moreno (helped by the yellow for the rain) caught up the pack, drove thru and won the race. (And Briggs only managed 1 lap before his battery failed-poor bastard!)
We stayed in Elkhart for 5 more days, most of it under a table at Siebkins...

At Willow Springs on 17 April, the first time for 15 years this twisty desert circuit had hosted a professional race, 10th was local driver Peter Hastrup in a Tiga FA82 and 11th was Joe Sposato in another RT4. The first five completed the full 40 laps distance, the next 5 were a lap down, Sposato 38, Noll 36, Blackaller 34. The last 3 retired. Rosen 33 spun and stalled, Moore punctured 23, and Shelby 22 laps had his engine let go.
