Another slow day at work got me to thinking about race cars and decals. I thought about this photo (from a friend) of the 1960 NASCAR Grand National Champion's car (Rex White) and how simple things use to be with a single "Champion Spark Plug" decal on his 1960 Chevrolet. Can you image this years "Champion", in any series, with a single decal on the car?

Another thought took me to Jack Pennington who was denied the 1990 NASCAR Rookie of the Year honors (another thread in itself) and he then returned to his roots as a true specialist with late model dirt cars. His first race back on the dirt - all the decals were placed upside down on the race car. When running the premier division at NASCAR Jack once told me he would love to have Exlax as a sponsor on the hood and Charmin toilet tissue as a sponsor on the rear of the car. No wonder he did not fit in with the NASCAR top brass.

Give other odd decals or graphics on race cars. Who had the most, who had the strangest, who had the funniest and who said no way.

Saw "Your Mom Wants You To Eat At Jimmy John's" on the back of a JJ-sponsored Ferrari once.

May have a photo of a GT3 spec Honda CRX that was sponsored by McDonalds, and had "Haulin' Buns" on the back.

Used to have a sticker that said "My Other Car's a Mach V" on my old CRX (hopefully someone here watched Speed Racer as a kid!)

IIRC there was a Lola sports car in South Africa many years ago wearing the slogan "Try me and stop one."

To the uninitiated, this was a pun on the old ice cream van slogan, "stop me and buy one."

South Africans are quite fond of sporting decals on their cars or wearing T-shirts with some witty comment.

One that I have seen recently at a race:

SCUDERIA CLUELESS - "All the Gear, no Idea."

Here is a photo that I took showing a decal on the Ford Mustang of historic racer, Derek van Blerk of Cape Town.

A number of years ago when staw bales were still in general use around country circuits the Bank of New South Wales were involved in a sedan series in NZ.
All of the cars contesting the series had to have a sign panel with the words BANK ON THE WALES
prominently displayed on each side of the car.
It was not long before some character had his sign panel reading WANK ON THE BALES

Racing cars sponsored by undergarments were popular in England for a while. There was the infamous team of Minis which bore the legend "Knickers in Tins Racing", and Neil Ginn's F3 GRD sported logos for Messrs Lyle and Scott's Y-front underpants in 1972.

For some reason, I was always vastly amused by the "Astro Ball Clackers" decals that Vern Schuppan had on his F Atlantic Palliser in 1971. For those who don't recall them, clackers were a childrens toy that were very popular for a while before being banned as too dangerous.

Wasn't there a stock car with "turn car around if you can read this" writting at the roof upside down. :drunk:

I think that the line "Buy me and stop one" (the ice-cream van slogan was, I believe, "Stop me and buy one") appeared on an advertising poster featuring the Durex-sponsored Surtees, or possibly a later Lola F5000 (T400??).

I remember the large Durex billboards showing Jonesy in the Surtees with the slogan...
"The Small Family Car".

The South African "ice-cream car" was that of Doug Serrurier. Driven by him and Jackie Pretorius. Sponsership came from the WALLS ice-cream company.

There was once a car with minor sponsorship from an ice-cream company based near Timaru in NZ that had the slogan "Lucky Boys Ice Cream - Often licked - Never beaten .. The slogan on the car and also on shop fronts was not noticed for years in NZ until an english comedian, Julian Carrey had a field day with the wording - after that the slogan was quickly withdrawn.

I assume you mean Julian Clary. Calling him a comedian is a debateable point.

On my brother's Historic Mustang racer: "Racing is the only sport that requires two balls".

While building my HM racer in the mid '90's I listened to a lot of classic rock and roll (still do).

As I got ready for the first drive in the old girl the Rolling Stones began blasting and to this day on the dashboard: "It's only Rock and Roll".

We are a strange bunch, are we not?

ggnagy, Historic Mustang and I are good buddies, but I have to admit seeing "HM" tickles a primitive part of my SCCA-oriented brain.

For those TNFers in other parts of the world, the Sports Car Club of America once grouped their modified cars into classes CM* (C Modified -- the big bangers) down thru HM (H Modified -- the tiddlers). The Lotus ran in GM. The nomenclature has since undergone some changes and the old GM is CSR (C Sports Racing) last I checked.

*ISTR seeing BMods race back in the fifties. Was there ever an AMod class?

I'm aware this is straying OT for a forum titled "decals", but that's one of the joys of TNF!

Lotus23- According to my copy of Vintage American Road Racing Cars by Harold Pace and Mark Brinker, A- and B-Mod did in fact exist. Starting in 1959, A-Mod was 8,000cc and bigger (!), B-Mod was 5,000-8,000. In '65 things were condensed so that C/M was 3,000cc and up, eliminating A- and B-Mod. I don't know offhand if anything ever ran in A/M. Production classes generally followed along (A-H production).

Going the other direction, SCCA briefly recognized an I-Production class, for Berkleys!

I looked through a couple dozen program-published entry lists and found numerous B Modifieds, more-numerous H Modifieds, zero A Modifieds, one I Production Berkley, and two K Production Berkleys (348 cc).

ok, yeah.... I did cause a bit of thread drift. Like that never happens here. :) I must admit I never realized that A and B mod were once offical classses up to as late as '65. All the feature race winners I remember reading about seemed to be C/Mod cars. I would have to go back and take a closer look.

The I and K production classifications brings about a different question that might be worthy of a new thread. At what point did the SCCA move from pure FIA engine capacity classes to "competition potential" classifications? By 1962, the Berkeleys were being classed in E and G production.

It is interesting to see how the Modified classes morphed over time into the current Sport Racer category. It went from modified production cars to homebuilt specials to group 7 cars to fendered formula cars and minature LMPs. Mores the shame that it went from 8 classes to 2 (and a half)

Found a couple pics in my archives, so I thought I'd contribute actual stickers again.

This one's pretty well known. Heck, someone here probably owns one!

This one's not really a sticker, I guess, but I liked the targets enough to use film on them!

Both were from this year's BRIC.

I think we'll leave the merits (or otherwise) of 'religious' branding out of this thread from now on, merci...

Yeah, I don't think they would allow it... I just like the name and the badge (roundel?) design!
I would understand their refusal but thank you:)
