I'm looking for information about the American Indycar Series (AIS) for. It was established in the late 80s by Bill Tempero (?) and existed until the mid 90s if I'm not mistaken. Buddy Lazier was champion in 1988 and later Robby Unser was crowned as well. I'm looking for results and point standings.

Couldn't have been that good a series if Bill Tempero won. Didn't he twice get turned away from "main" races (CART and IRL) for being too slow?
ISTR Tempero started a series for old Indycars - was this the one?

Yes, this is the series created by Bill Tempero, for old indycars, with normally aspirated stock block engines.

Is there a decent summary anywhere of what happened to the AIS? - as far as I can tell, Tempero set it up so he and his mates could play with recent-ish chassis with cheap stockblock engines, then he sold out in the late 90s, and then.... the series seemed to disappear from the radar - there seemed to be ambitions to make it a second-level series competing in new markets in the US and around Central and South America. Something that looked very much like it still seemed to be around last year as the "United States Speedway Series" so I assume its wings were clipped somewhat....
