I came across an interesting fact whilst researching for a Jaguar painting I am doing.
In May 1938, Jaguar founder William Lyons started the one and only motor race he ever took part in - and won!
It was the SS car club meeting at Donington Park and he was victorious in an SS100 in the 'trade' handicap race. There have been many first time winners but they usually go on to race again.
Has this feat ever been equalled I wonder, one race, one win then retire?

Yes but JPM had raced before - and afterwards. William Lyons did one race period.

Maybe someone in the early days, then, like Jamin?

Well, er, um,, cough, shuffle, errmm........ me, actually.

I have competed in rallies (msotly as a co-river) and sprints a lot, But I've done just one race - OK, it was indoor fun karting, but it was with my motor club crew, so everyone was taking it super-seriously. I was at the back of the grid, nipped throuigh when all the real fast drivers tangled at the first corner, and then held them off with super-defensive driving in the widest kart in history (imagine Alonso at Imola but with seven Michael Schumachers all trying to get past, or de Caesaris at his most obstructuve). Fortunately the others were hampering each other in their efforts to pass me and I crossed the line in first place, punching the air in approved fashion - and promptly retired from racing.

One race, one win, thank you and good night!

Would celebrity challenge races like the ones they had during Long beach weekends count? Can't think of anyone specific, but that seems most likely for the "one-and-done." Or maybe an obscure co-driver at LeMans or Daytona 24 hours?

Made me think of Stuart Hall in the UK (he of "It's A KnockOut" fame).

He won an Escort Celebrity race at Oulton Park in the early seventies and I'm sure it was his first race and I don't remember seeing him again...

Anybody here remember?

Must be something wrong with my ego
Until I read BRG's post, i'd forgotten that, I too, can claim the same glory
None of your karts either, my win was in a genuiine single-seater racing-car
OK, it was a Vee, and I had driven a few at various test sessions before
The occasion was a "celebrity" race at Manfeild (NZ) and I was roped in to represent the media. Because we were all rookies, they doubled the rows of the grid, and I was at the back. Some sort of red mist took me into first place by the first corner, and I think I had a third of a lap's lead by the end of the first lap.
Unfortunately, no offers of a season in Atlantic or even FF followed

Does that qualify you as an 'estuary' or 'tributary'?!

Sorry; I couldn't resist...

I disagree - we would have been denied the benefit of your writing. ;)

Stuart was something of a petrolhead and raced in the early 60s, I think -- I'm sure there's pictures of him racing in the autobiography/collection of football pieces he brought out a couple of years ago. Massive TVR enthusiast in the 70s, he was always seen in one of Blackpool's finest when he was opening supermarkets/village fetes in the North West.

How about Charles Rigoulot? He won his first race, the 1937 Bol d'Or, driving solo. AFAIK his only other race was Le Mans the same year, when he retired, partnered by Yves Giraud-Cabantous. So, if I'm correct, then he won his one and only solo race.

Was the 1894 Paris-Rouen Count Jules de Dion's only race?

Do you mean Albert? He raced on several occasions up to at least 1898.

The book I was looking at has Count Jules de Dion who was disqualified because his steam car needed the assistance of a stoker and not conforming to the rules.

Another one has Count Jules Felix Albert de Dion so I suppose it's a case of 'You pays your money and takes yer choice'

That's the same man. Whatever his name, he did race elsewhere, he didn't win the Paris-Rouen and strictly speaking it wasn't a race anyway. Apart from that he qualifies perfectly.

I believe he won his class in the 1897 Paris-Dieppe race and was third in the Paris-Trouville the same year.
That might however have been a different Count Albert de Dion - a son?

Well I guess I can say truthfully that thanks to the wonderful generosity of John Pearson who leant me one of his 'knobbly' Lister Jaguars I won my first and until or unless I win the lottery, my only motor race. It was at the BDC Silverstone meeting in August 2002 and I won the Allcomer's Handicap.

Please forgive my immodesty.
