Hopefully the following is not to far off the topics of discussion for TNF. Although Porsche has (or had) a sporting heritage the following is about the production cars.

In 1972 I had the opportunity to take a tour of the Porsche 911 production line. This was when the cars still had a significant amount of handwork in their assembly. Compared to the clinical production facilities of today, thirty odd years ago it was very different.

The following are some of the photos that I took.

If there is interest I will upload the rest of the photos.

Bill - I missed this thread on the first go round. I'm definitely interested in all you've got on this one!

So Bill, How do the engines, for instance, get assembled now? Are they put together by real people?

When I took the factory tour in late 1983 it looked very much the same.

Cheers,

Curt,

They were taken on 4 July 1972 - At the time I was in the US Air Force and stationed in Wiesbaden. 4 July is an American holiday and as it fell during the work week it was a great opportunity to visit Porsche.

I hope to post the rest of the photos next week.

Bill

Bill - Thank you. I have someone interested in at least one of your factory photos for inclusion in a soon to be published Porsche book. Please contact me and I will give you the details.

Fantastic photos. I've posted a link on the pelican porsche forum - hope you don't get overloaded - they'll love these.

I was lucky to have a tour as a 17 year old in 1987. It really wasn't very different - apart from the 959's all over the place :) I now have a 1981 911 of my own.
