It seems there was a championship for sports cars in these countries in 1940. Who knows something about that?
Thanks for any help.

In Italy, only on paper.

Eight races, five classes, rich money prizes. I have the list if needed.
Only the pseudo Mille Miglia (GP Brescia) was raced but no champion declared.

Hi Alessandro,

Yes that could help me.
I have of course photo's of the MM '40 and one also of Helmut Polensky in a race on 5/5/1940 (somewhere in Germany).
Thank You for all.

A date of 5/5/1940 would be consistent with the Hamburger Stadtparkrennen, which was usually run on the first Sunday in May. However, I think a 1940 race would be a bit of a surprise .....;)

Alessandro: that calendar seems to be more complete than the one I posted in the Racing in WW2 thread:

http://forums.autosp...5083#post585083

That's from late October or early November 1939. What was your source?

Richard, it was taken down from Auto Italiana several years ago.
It checks with the one published more recently by Curami in his wonderful Italian sports car book.

Your list comprises also some voiturette races. Mine only the rounds for the Italian sports car championship (or, better, the five championships). There are 3 mountain-climbs also.

That´s possible, but was it shot during a racing event? A race in 1940 would indeed be a surprise.

What car is he driving?

And is it possible, to show that picture here? If so perhaps it would be able to identify the location and event.

@Michael, to my knowledge Polensky was not part of the team at Kronstadt. Also that event was in September (!)

But without a picture, who knows.

All what is sure is, that Hamburg is probably the flattest area of whole Germany. The next mountains are at least hundreds of kilmeters away.

@Delsaux, picture posting is absolutely easy with imageshack. Alternatively I can offer, that you can also send it to me by e-mail (uechtel@gmx.de) and I will upload it and post it here for you.

Voila, as promised, here the picture:

@Delsaux, thank you, a really nice one!

So who what where when?

Who?

It´s pretty clear, indeed Helmut Polensky:

(here with the winner´s laurels at Hamburg 1939)

What?

No BMW 328 for sure - watch the different mounting of the windscreen in the picture above!

But after the Eifelrennen (21.5.1939) Polensky switched to one of Toni Neumaier´s specials:

(picture from the Eifelrennen)

Doesn´t that fit perfectly?

When and Where?

Well, in the background we can see the black BMW 328 of von Hanstein, to be clearly identified by the "SS" letters in the circle in front of the door. Also part of the starting number is visible. It looks liek something like 1?1 (101, 121, 131, 161, 181 or 191).

So we have to look for an event in which both participated (numbers in brackets where available) :

11.6.1939 Wiener Höhenstraßenrennen: Hanstein: yes - Polensky: ?
9.7.1939 Schotten: Hanstein: yes (#5) - Polensky: yes
31.7.-2.8.1939 Deutsche Alpenfahrt: Hanstein: yes (#157) - Polensky: ?
6.8.1939 Großer Bergpreis (Großglockner) : Hanstein: yes (#101) - Polensky: yes (#102)

No races after that any more due to the outbreal of the war.

With the information I have I am sure it is at the Großglockner. Everything fits perfectly.

Markus is right, also the background is clearly alpine. The date? Looks like a postcard which has been sent much later by somebody else.

Hi, everybody,
You are right, the photo has been taken in August 1939 at the Grossglöckner.
May I add that I have just published a book on the races in Belgian Congo (and a little in Angola)? HThe name is: "Grands Prix en Noir et Blanc"

It was a pleasure for me to be able to help you on this. Do you have more of that stuff? ;)

Concerning your book about Congolesian races I think you might receive more attention in one of these threads:
