Bruno Giacomelli's lid normally had the Pink Panther on it.

I can't remember if I ever asked him about the diamonds; I did enquire as to why he put a gold leaf border around the Marlboro logo on the forehead at one time, and he simply said he thought that it looked nice...

I think there is a connection between the diamonds and Pink Panther. Rember Blake Edwards Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers playing Inspector Clouseau.

I was always lead to believe it was the pink panther, diamonds and all. AGVs in F1, not my idea of a good match!

I think the colours of Bruno are inspired by Tino and Vittorio Brambilla's helmet (white balls and not diamonds)

Stefan, I really think that you are the only person who believes that Bruno actually posts on this forum.

Lots of us would love to think that he does, but so far we have seen no real evidence of this.

Come on, Bruno, out yourself!

The answer: NO!

He saw the helmet of Silvio Moser and Graham Hill and was looking for something which looks similar.

Prior to Olivier Gendebien leading the Ferrari team at Spa for the 3 laps that he did lead, I wonder when the previous time was that a yellow car led a World Championship Grand Prix?

If ever.....

I had a lovely model of a yellow Lancia D50, but if the real thing ever led anything, I'm not certain

a yellow Lancia D50,

Really? I suspect you are talking about a 1956 Lancia Ferrari, which Brumm models produce.

It was driven to 6th place at Spa in 1956 by Andre Pilette, but it never led the race. Oddly, Paul Frere's car at Spa was red.

Yep your right, I just remembered it had panniers, not the faired in ones, and it was Brumm. I was staggered when I saw Bernie's D50 (replica, but from the factory drawings), tiny thing, I was itching to get in!

If ever.....

Well, according to Higham, in 1952 a Belgian named Roger laurent in a Lago-Talbot won the non-championship Formula 1 Elaintarha Ajot at Helsinki. But, was his car yellow?

Francois Mazet, Siffert March 701, French GP Paul Ricard 1971.

His only GP, IIRC, prior to a career path which included working with David Theime of Essex Petroleum *fame*. Things went wrong when a they sold supertanker's worth of crude oil, which was subsequently discovered as belonging to someone else entirely...

Looks like F3 to me. We have two McNamara Mk3B in position 1 and 3; the "white" car in P2 looks like an Eifelland-March 703. Judging by the number of spectators in the grandstand, it's probably a practice shot.

My tendency would be to go rather for the "Maipokal" on 10/05/1970; I have a shot from the "Südwest-Pokal" on 05/07/1970 where the pillars behind the grandstand seem to have been "completed" with some horizontal publicity panels.

If so, Lauda, Pankl and Riedl could be candidates for our two McNamaras (the fourth one of Peter Schäbitz DNA).

Hmmmh - I thought about it but look at this picture from the "Südwest-Pokal" on 05/07/1970:

Posted Image

She has two "white" stripes each side of her helmet. Of course, that can also be a later addition after the "Mai-Pokal".

The additional problem is that I associate red helmets with all three others Eifelland pilots, namely Willi Deutsch, Franz Pesch and Wolfgang Bülow ...

Somehow Hannelore's helmet design is not conclusive; here another shot from the F3 race on 05/07/1970:

And at the F2 "Preis von Baden Württemberg" on 11/10/1970 we have this one:

Maybe the two McNamaras will help solve the mystery. On the one leading into Südkurve one can make out part of the starting number, if only ever so slightly. The visible part could be either a 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, or 9. The three McNamaras in the 1970 Maipokal were No17 Pankl, No2 Riedl, No18 Lauda - my guess for the two McNs would be Lauda, followed by Pankl, both driving for Bosch Racing Team Austria.
