Dear TNF members,

We know that there have been racing cars with more than four wheels ( Tyrrell P34 at F1 or the Tom Clancy Special at Indy ), but I wonder whether there have ever been a race with a car with less than four wheels. Please, do not mention Gilles' Ferrari at Zandvoort 79.
At the beginning, many cars had only three wheels, but there have ever been a racing car with only three wheels ?

Loads. The Morgan three-wheeler was a Brooklands regular and the French-licensed equivalent (the Sandford) also took part in cyclecar races on the Continent. It was not uncommon for there to be a three-wheel contingent in cyclecar races in the 20s.

At some point they got classed as motorcycles with sidecars, so for example Breedlove's WLSR records in the early 60s on his 3 wheeled Spirit of America technically stand as motorcycle records.

And in the very earliest days of town-to-town motorcycles raced along with triwheelers and fourwheelers, although they tended to have their own class. Not forgetting Paris-Dakar.
