South African Formula 1 programmes

Does anyone have any programs from the South African F1 series?
I've been sent a bunch of excellent colour photographs recently from the South African F1 series and some of the cars are proving difficult to identify. The numbers shown on the cars don't always agree with what's shown in the F1 Register and I want to go back to the original entry lists in the programs.
I'm after something like this one from the 1972 Republic Day Trophy:
I've cropped this one a little to fit it into TNF but click on it and you'll get the idea.
Can anyone help? I'm especially keen to get hold of the 1971 Rhodesian GP.
Many thanks
Allen

I have race reports for basically every race from the SAF1 period. Perhaps I can find something in them. I think you still have my email address??
PS. If you need programmes for the 1948-1959 period, well then I surely can help. Then again it was the time of the "specials" with F1 still only a dream in SA.

One hitch is the 150 quid price tag though!

Hi PeterOriginally posted by Peter Morley
Just looking at the Formula One Register's book list and I see that they offer "A Record of F1 Racing in South Africa 1960-1975", presumably that might help.
One hitch is the 150 quid price tag though!
I have that (excellent) book and that's the one that I referred to above giving me numbers that don't agree with the pictures. Most of the time it's not a problem but I have been given a lovely picture of a Lola T140 at the 1971 Rhodesian GP with #25 on the side and the F1R book gives the two T140-series Lolas at the race as #21 and #22. I'm hoping the entry list will sort that out.

Macoran, although John Love drove the Team Gunston March 701 in the 1972 SA Championship season opening race, the Cape South Easter at Killarney, he felt that the March was incapable of beating Charlton's Lotus 72 and returned to using the rebuilt Surtees TS9. After a DNF in the Highveld 100 and spinning out of the SAGP, the Surtees was all but scrapped. Love then took over the Team Gunston Brabham BT33/1 which had been acquired for Willie Ferguson for the rest of the 1972 season.
With kind regards,
Russell

The pictures are appearing on OldRacingCars.com as I sort through them. Have a look at the Surtees TS5 page and the Lola T140 page.
The one I'm trying to sort out is this one, destined for the T140 page.

The "photo" above the entry list is for "decoration" purposes in the programme and the "editor" could have used any racing car photo he had.
The photo of the March, I do not believe, is/was intended to refer to Love's BT33 which was entered for the race.
A bit misleading I agree though.
PS. At times when one of his "better" cars was out of action John Love reverted to his "spare" the March.

get to the bottom of things it would be easier if......................................

What's nice about Mark Harmer's Surtees is that he can really drive the thing!

I had no idea you were a TNFer. Great to see you here.
I haven't spoken to Jannie in years. We used to correspond about LDSs before the web. Thanks for the phone number - I'll get back in touch.

Here are some more pictures of the T-140s that raced in South Africa:-
Dave Charlton, 1968 (SL140/14?)
Jackie Pretorius, 1968 (SL140/4?)
John McNicol, 1969 (T-142?)
And a picture of Eddie Keizan's Surtees TS5A:-
Kind regards,

Could be, but do we actually know that Joe had SL140/14? Maybe his father had bought a T140 overseas or had got Doug Serrurier to build a fresh one for him? If I could just find a report that says something like "Joe in his newly-acquired ex-Amm Lola"...Originally posted by Russell_Sheldon
Many thanks for for posting the picture and for the links to your brilliant website, Allen. I know that this really is no help at all because its not factual, but I'd hazard a guess that the #25 Lola T-140 is Joe Domingo's SL140/14.
Not doing very well with the programme search, am I?
I've had two leads, Cedric's plus one emailed to me, but is there nobody here with even a single early 1970s South African programme?
Allen
PS Thanks for the pictures Russell

Yes Russell, very much of interest, especialy the F1 races. Could you scan the entry lists and send them to me (allen@oldracingcars.com)? Getting entry numbers right for these events has proved problematic which in turn makes it difficult to identify some cars from photographs.Originally posted by rwhitworth

I am also very much interested. Please, if possible. I am also willing to purchase (excluding Rally programmes). I have a vast number of old SA race programmes that date back to the 1930s, but none of the ones you mentioned. It is becoming somewhat of a hopeless effort to collect old race programmes in South Africa.

I've got the following South African race programmes available :
1970 Grand Prix South Africa
1970 9 Hours Kyalami
1971 Rand Spring Trophy
1971 9 Hours Kyalami
1975 Grand Prix South Africa
1976 Grand Prix South Africa
As I am a collector, I'm not selling but I would be happy to trade.
Especially if someone would have the 1977 Grand Prix South Africa programme ...
If you're interested just let me know, we could exchange 'for trade/wanted' lists.
Have a nice evening,
14

I'm grateful to Denis Lupton and Russell Whitworth for kick-starting the archive. I will get around to contacting Jannie van Aswegan but I'm a little snowed under at the moment.
