I have a terribly trivial question about ol' Maurice. I have noticed that in many photos/clips he's wearing a cap, usually light blue with white stripe(s) (with that little whossisname on top); whether he's wearing a suit or a shirt with short sleeves- the cap is there. Was it his lucky charm, or was there another story behind it?

Thanks in advance. :)

Yes, in one of Maurice Louche books thre is a full page with photos ot Trintignant wearing
different, unusual hats.
When he had nothing on his head the rest could be strange.

As I said when it was posted at TNF a while back, I'd kill for a half decent print of it to frame... Can you get prints from the Fougere Archive, or are they kept strictly privee?

Sorry, totally O.T. and out of character for those wonderful gents- but this photo is tailor-made for funny captions/comments. I'll get m' coat...

That shot of the Cooper on the freeway must have been taken on the weekend of the 1960 US Grand Prix.
I remember running "interference" in my mother's '49 Mercury station wagon on that stretch of freeway leading down into Riverside for a group of F1 cars. The traffic was bumper-to-bumper so I led several cars driven by their mechanics down the right shoulder and into town after practice. The pits at the track were very primitive and all the F1 teams worked on their cars at various auto dealerships in town.
I was a scrutineer for the California Sports Car Club which was running the supporting events that weekend.
IIRC it was 15 or 16 years before F1 came back to California.
Were any other TNFers there at the 1960 USGP?

about this cap:

M.TRINTIGNANT says in his book PILOTES de COURSES about his victory at MONACO in 1955:

i put my fetish cap and I take it at each race.

but in an interview with a french journalist P.VERGES in ''AUTO HEBDO'' it is said:

about an huge crash in BERNE in 1948 he kept some fragility on his skull with the sun so

it the reason why he has to put a cap.

I've two questions about Maurice Trintignant either:

1. Has anyone informations about his racing familiy: His brothers René und Louis and his cousin Jean Louis? I know, that Louis dies in an accident in the Picardie GP 1933 with the Bugatti that Maurice raced in his first races.

2. I need informations and pictures about his heavy accident in an event (I think F2) in Switzerland 1948...

Thank you for help

What a treasure trove of nifty pictures...

I think there's some information above about 1948. He hurt his head.

What's a 'Fetish Cap'?

On second thoughts, I'm not sure I want to know! I'll put this one down to a translation error!

"Fetish cap" - just a little bit of superstition, like Hawthorn's bow tie, or former Aussie cricket captain's square of red towelling, etc. Not at all unusual in the sporting world.
