Hi guys. New forum member from Australia here!

I own a 1990 BMW M5 and was recently told by a previous owner (through a mutual acquaintance) that my M5 was used as the safety/pace car in the 1991 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide.

This was the race that ended up with Ayrton Senna winning after extremely heavy rain led to a severely shortened race.

What I am hoping is that someone here (who maybe has a video of the race, or otherwise) can confirm whether the pace car in that race was in fact a silver BMW E34 M5 .

I would think, given the weather conditions, there was plenty of reason for it to be out on the track.

If it appears to be the case, any pointers as to where I might get a video of the race would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Safety Cars did not appear in F1 before 1993 (?). There were a kind of medical or other utility cars in 1991 in Adelaide. Look at this TV screenshot:

I think in 1989 the car that followed the field on the first lap was a Skyline GTR and in 1990 it was a Testarossa.. but I could have them the wrong way around :D

1991... I don't know, sorry.

Thanks for the assistance so far. The pic is good and could be my car. I was aware that there was no official pace car, but as you say, they did use a car on the circuit at times.

What I really need is a video that shows the car in action. If anyone has a video that includes good vision of the M5 in question, could you let me know the name of it and I will try to source it.

Thanks
David

Prost 'revolt' was in '89. It was more of a refusal to race as none of the other drivers decided to join his revolt.

I'll check race recording I have and will collect BMW footage. Is it possible for you to download about 10 MB video file?

BTW, it was in 1992 when the safety car was introduced into the rules of FIA F1 World Championship. Basing on that rules SC was in action for the first time during 1992 Great Britain GP after Herbert's Lotus stopped on the track.

The funny thing is, F1 survived for years without a safety car, and to my knowledge there was never any fatal accidents involving marshals or stricken cars in a championship race. Yet now F1 is becoming more and more like American racing. The slightest thing going wrong and the safety car is dispatched also by reflex :(

the 91 prost deal was where he was sacked/quit and morbidelli took his drive.

i think he came 6th and ended up with a career points total of 0.5

adelaide 91 was my first gp attendance..... nice race to start on.

Lella Lombardi is (to date) the only person with a career points total of 0.5. Morbidelli's career total was 8.5, which included a podium at Australia in '95.

Thanks for your help guys. I have been sent a pic of the car in question which definitely looks to be a white one - whereas mine is silver (and always has been).

As such, it looks like someone else is driving around in the 1991 Grand Prix car - not me!

Cheers and thanks again.

And I remember my promise to check race video. May be there were more than one BMWs on the track.

Yes. Good point. As the M5 in question wasn't an 'official' pace car, there may well have been more than one involved in whatever capacity they did have.

If you are able to check the video footage, it would be appreciated.

Kind regards

David

Finally I did it. Here's the link on 14 MB AVI file with some shots of BMWs (there were at least two different ones) in 1991 Australian Grand Prix race: http://disk.tom.ru/g.../39292?pw=12345.

If asked password is 12345.

File is available during next 24 hours. You can control number of downloadings at http://disk.tom.ru/108402?pw=12345. Maximum is 5.

Thank you very much Vladimir. Unfortunately, when I click on that link, it appears to ask me for both a login name and a password (I say 'appears' as my Russian is non-existent).

Any other pointers as to how to access it? How about putting it on Photobucket or Rapidshare?

In the meantime, was the colour of either of the M5's silver?

Thanks
David

David, go at http://disk.tom.ru/108402?pw=12345 and enter 12345 at window in the center of the page. Then click at link at following page. Two downloads are left. But it's no problem for me to upload it again.

Vladimir

I don't seem to get what I should. I get 2 spots to enter info over left of screen. One says ëîãèí and the second ïàðîëü

Then there is a button to press and underneath the 3 sections is ðåãèñòðàöèÿ

Does this sound like the screen I should get?

Thanks

David

I just did a web translation and ge the following error message:

the error: packet is not found
the error: it is removed by 18.10.2005 21:59:57

The boxes over to the left translate at login and password, then the entrance and the registration.

Arrghh

I have tried both links at home and at work and still get the same screen asking for a login and password to the left and pics of a post box, petrol bowser, computer and pistol to the right!

I can think of one - Tom Pryce at Kyalami. A car was stopped on one side of the track, a marshal was running across to it, carrying a fire extinguisher, and was hit by Tom's car, killing both of them.

Now, back to the topic......

Yep, that was the first one....

And what a total disaster that was. I would dearly love to say it robbed Howden Ganley of his first win, but to be honest I think no one has a clue what happened.
