Couldn't resist picking up on this - some might say - contentious comment in the online UK Telegraph

"Jenson Button will unveil Formula One's first unbranded car next week when Honda launch their 2007 charger free of sponsor logos."

I'm sure there was the odd car or two in the 1967 Mexican Grand Prix...

Perhaps a more serious point. I wonder when the last F1 race took place during, presumably, 1968, when a participating car bore no commercial sponsorship whatsoever?

You would probably have to go a lot further back as there were a lot of cars carrying Shell, Esso, BP, Dunlop etc stickers which would I suggest be in deference to some 'commercial' involvement of the relevant company.

I presume you mean "bore no signwritten commercial sponsorship whatsoever"

Commercial sponsorship has been with us more or less for ever, but painting the sponsors' names on the cars is the recent change.
e.g. fuel, lubricant, tyre and brake/clutch materials companies.

Vanwall (for instance) were supported by Dunlop, KLG, Bosch, BP, not to mention Vandervell bearings.

Stephen and Allan thank you. Perhaps I was less than clear. I was not wondering about earlier manifestations of commercial involvement- I'm aware that has been present, subtley or otherwise, since Adam was a pup. No, my musing was about the last F1 car after 1/1/68 which took to the track bereft of any commercial signage.

Well, what about Ferrari's tribute to the 9/11 tragedy at Monza in 2001?

Of course, I understand your point about a car that lasted for a whole Formula One season with no commerical sponsorship though.

There may have been a Bridgestone logo somewhere on the car, there certainly was on the suits.

Likewise the Honda thus far in testing has had 'technical' sponsor stickers on the car.

In the wake of Honda possibly launching an unsponsored car on Monday I was curious if this had been done before since sponsorship in F1 really started (gold leaf lotus in the late '60s?).

In the unsponsored eras, did they have to run any tire stickers? spark plugs? oil? anything?

Allegedly the un-sponsored Honda RA107 looks like this (found on Racing Comments) :

Personally I'm still hoping this is a fake. Ugh.

Jordan in 2004 was basically unsponsored at the start of the year. Sauber had only Liqui-Moly and Mercedes-Benz when they debuted in 1993, and March was unsponsored at the start of 1992.
