I seem to recall a promotion advertised (in Motorsport I think, but possibly Autocar) in the late '60s / early '70s which featured light aircraft, an elan +2 and a bicycle......

From memory, you bought the elan and got a free bike and a flying lesson!
Was the bike to get you around while the car was being repaired? I bet it got more miles put on than the Elan!

It was probably a folding bike at the time a Moulton or similar to go in the boot of the car.

I can imagine that would be a popular joke! But would Moulton not be affiliated to BMC???

Can't recal what type of bike it was. Presumably if it was a folding bike it would be so because you would only ride it as far as the bus stop nearest to the service centre before hopping on the number 26!

Had a rummage through a good few Motorsports last night, and can't find the ad, so I think it must have been in another mag, possibly Autocar.

The Elva Courier owner was Bob Curl, who worked for Elva down Hastings way before he joined Lotus.

Hi Bloggsworth

I know Colin Wills who wrecked the Team Lotus 100E Van. He has loads of stories.

It has just been announced that the bean counters and planners have finally got their way and Panshanger aerodrome will close on  20th September 2014.  Their final events there will be the Panshanger Revival Day on 10th August and the Aerobatic Day on 14th September.  R.I.P.

Just in :-

Dear Panshanger enthusiast,

By now you will have heard about the closure of the NLFS on September 21st, but that doesn’t need to be the end of the story for Panshanger.  Panshanger People have been campaigning for the last 18 months to keep the airfield and Hillyfields Meadow (end of R11) out of the local plan.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough council originally included the sites in the consultation in Dec12/Jan13 because they had already been taken out of the green belt and designated as an area for housing and the owners, Mariposa were keen to sell.  However they ignored the fact that there was an airfield there and following that consultation, they were forced to do more work, recognising the importance of the airfield to the community here.  Most of the local residents are keen to keep the airfield and there were a lot of objections to the plans.  Now the council are re-writing the local plan and will be putting the draft local plan to councillors in September for consideration, prior to another public consultation in November.  If, as we hope, we can persuade them to remove Panshanger from the draft local plan before September, Mariposa will have a much lower expectation of getting planning permission and may extend the lease or even sell it to an aviation group at a price that is affordable.  This is our game plan, but we don’t have long to achieve it.

So please visit our two websites - www.panshangerpeople.org.uk and www.savepanshanger.co.uk and find out how you can help us increase the odds of saving the airfield. Tell all your friends and fellow pilots to help as well.  We want everyone to write letters to our local councillors and council planners as well as Mariposa.  See the website for details of how to do this.

Thanks a lot,

Jane Quinton

P.S. please do not respond to me on this email as I will be away for a while, but do contact Panshanger people at panshangerpeople@gmail.com and sign up to the email list to get updated on what is happening

From this week's Welwyn & Hatfield Times

This could be very good news if it happens - it is a really lovely spot with about 60 light aircraft based there at its peak and a delightful cafe and old airfield buildings. Fingers crossed - Home of Lotus Service Dept 1959-66 in a part of the big hanger. And  home to both Clark & Chapman's light planes.

A council planning committee had previously accepted officers’ proposals to include plans for around 700 houses on the Welwyn Garden City site.

However, at last night’s council meeting, councillors decided to remove the initial plans and include a new proposal that does not involve building on the green belt, and leaves potential for the retention of the airfield.

A council spokeswoman confirmed the plans involve potentially moving the airfield slightly north and lowering the number of houses built.

More to follow.
