McLaren should be competitive at Silverstone unless Ferrari has outpaced them in their development over the last few weeks.

Ferrari will be stronger in Hockenheim than at Silverstone of that I'm pretty sure. Silverstone is a pretty pure aero circuit with mostly high speed corners, and only one big braking zone of any merit. McLaren can probably tune their balance to emphasise the front end grip without suffering quite as much in the slow speed sections.

Hockenheim is more start->stop and has a more even mixture of high speed and low speed corners. In that sense McLaren will have to compromise its setup more relative to what it would at Silverstone.

Massa is a machine at Hockenheim too, it was one of the few circuits where he genuinely outpaced Michael Schumacher from Friday to Sunday fuel corrected. (Even though he had to play the team game that weekend).

If McLaren struggle to match Ferrari at Silverstone I think they might as well pack up for 2008 and concentrate on their two cars for 2009.

am i the only 1 annoyed/confused by the decision to test at silverstone (and hockenheim) barely 2 weeks before those races?its bad enough the teams pounding round barcelona all winter knowing it means we'll get a procession there, but surely all this testing,on the same track as they'll be racing on in 10 days time (give or take) just means we'll probably get 2 processions there as well?should they ban testing at F1 tracks that hold races?just curious as to what you guys think, cos clearly barcelona is a prime example of plenty of testing = boring race at that track

Certainly that wouldn't be a bad idea. Perhaps they could make an exception for Barcelona but as you say, testing at Silverstone and Hockenheim prior to racing there isn't ideal. The Friday practice sessions will be boring I'm afraid...

With the endless trackoptions at Paul Ricard, why not go and test there more often ?

I'm not convinced it makes that much difference. It's the track/cars that conspire to make a boring race, not how much they test there.

what i mean is like, the teams even before they get to friday practice basically have near enough the perfect setup anyway (give or take) making friday almost pointless and meaning by the time they even get to the friday sessions, everyne knows where they are, whats gonna happen, how fast they'll be etc and so almost knowing the result in advance-i know barcelona they test at all times of year, but to test at a track barely 2 weeks before you race there just seems a bit daft to me (to the teams it may not,i accept that) but really its not going to help matters-i appreciate its the cars and tracks as well that mean races arent that good now (even silverstone seems to have gone from a place where u'd see loads of overtaking,to basically only seeing any in the pits,if cars are out of position (eg massa last year) or if the conditions are changable (eg silverstone 2002)

That was certainly true when they had to use the race engines, but with the current rules they will normally do plenty of running. Don't forget they used to be able to use 2 cars at the tests, now its only 1. Come race weekend the weather conditions could be totally different. Last year was very exciting with the high winds, quite a few cars had problems round copse.

Testing at Silverstone: Massa the fastest

Maranello, 24th June

Circuit: Silverstone Circuit - 5.141 km
Driver: Felipe Massa
Car: F2008
Weather: air temperature 20/25 °C, track temperature 23/32 °C. Clear skies in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon.

No time to rest for the Formula 1 teams this week. Less than forty eight hours after the end of the French Grand prix, all teams competing in the World Championship met up again at Silverstone for the first of three days of testing.

Sitting in the cockpit of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro's F2008 was the winner of the Magny-Cours race, Felipe Massa. The series leader worked on development of new aerodynamic and mechanical solutions, as well as taking an initial look at set-up on the car for the British Grand Prix, which takes place at this track on 6th July. The outcome of this first day was reasonably positive, with Felipe setting the fastest time of the day in 1.20:188. He completed 71 laps, with just a small problem towards the end of the day preventing the completion of the programme.

Testing resumes at this track tomorrow morning, still with Felipe Massa on track. On Thursday, it will be Kimi Raikkonen's turn to get into the F2008 cockpit.

Good news folks! Club, Abbey, Farm, Bridge, Luffield A and the Pit Straight grandstands are all open to the public! However, you cannot go any further down the track than the Pedestrian Bridge on the start/finish line. Also, Woodcote grandstands and terraces are closed; if you go into the Luffield B/Woodcote A Terrace you will be asked to leave it.

There is also a mini shopping village between Club and Abbey so you can get some (overpriced as usual) merchandise there.

It's been extremely hot today - I have a nose as red as Massa's Ferrari! I'm looking forward to more action tomorrow. Pictures from today will be online at some point soon (e.g. when I've sorted them out).

I had no idea that testing was on today, but happened to drive pass Silverstone and heard the sound of F1 engines.

Paid £15 on the gate for an enjoyable hour or so watching F1 cars :smoking:

So what? You can buy tickets on the gate despite them saying you couldn't?
If thats the case it's incredibly annoying.

and thankyou for the information, lots of good viewing places at least:)

Was there any commentary at the circuit? I remember having regular updates of the times during the day last year.

Yes there was commentary, and this year they are allowed to see the timing screens as the teams have agreed to it, so they can actually commentate on the times!

id imagine thats because they didnt expect the demand they got and realised they'd have to open more areas to view from, and wouldnt have been enough time to get tickets out before the test

- Vettel was doing lots of laps (because they had the problems yesterday).

- Webber has stopped on track, causing a red flag.

- At the moment it is raining.

It's pretty overcast where I'm at at the moment, usually Northants cops this in an hour or so, so typical English weather. All four seasons - in the one day! :)

That's F2001-alike and certainly demanded a new crashtest by the looks of it.

Just back from Silverstone, Suzy, really sorry the one thing I forgot to do this morning was store your number. Sorry.

Good day out, Webbers been having problems all day, the Ferrari sounded like it had another problem just before lunch and wasn't to be seen for an hour after, (i left at this point) Great vantage points open for photographs so I hope to have some up soon for you guys.

Over a lap at Silverstone Ferrari keeps being in front of McLaren and BMW Sauber. McLaren can keep up in the fast parts, BMW Sauber in the slow parts but they loose time to Ferrari in the parts that are not suited to their cars.

At Magny-Cours BMW Sauber only introduced small changes to the frontwing, the deflectors and the floor. A planned bigger modification was taken off again because the results on track didn't correspond with that from the windtunnel. Rampf is prepared to sacrifice capacities reserved for next year's car in case the team find something promising for the current car: ''Normally this late in the year we would mainly concentrate the development on 2009. Now, still being in the top group in the championship, we will decide (what to do) from occassion to occassion. When it's worth it, a new development will stay in the windtunnel one or two days longer to fully get tested. In years in which our WC position was secured we would have perhaps cancelled that the development for the sake of the year that was to come.''

But the technical director excludes 2009 project groupes laying down their work in order to briefly do some work on the current car: ''Nowadays you can't do that anymore because many departments are closely intertwined. We can't take away people from a project from one day to another saying: 'Right, for the next couple of weeks you'll be doing something else'. You cannot simply stop the parts department or get it running again either. These are complex processes.''

McLaren on the other hand will keep fully concentrating on 2008 for a long time. Whitmarsh: ''Till week 35 (the last week of August) we will further develop full steam ahead. Only after that focus goes to next year's car.''

AFCA, one thing I noticed and the guys that came to the track with me noticed was the differance as to when the drivers were picking up the throttle in luffield. Massa was on the throttle well before halfway through the corner and at full throttle before he was leaving it to the main straight. Kovi was not able to pick up the throttle till he was just exiting the corner and Kubica was around the 3/4's mark. Your only talking the space of 30 to 40 meters max but I suppose it makes a big differance in lap times.
