Hi dear motorsportfriends
Everybody knows Alan Mann as very succesful team-manager. Was he himself an active racing driver?
Regards from Vienna

Thanks for the hint - but there are so many threads that I did not find a quick answer to my question

He has been racing, in recent years, in historic saloons but I don't recall his racing pedigree "in period".

There was apparently an Alan Mann who raced an HWM Jaguar in 1960. Is that the same guy?

Yes - the ex-Ted Greenaway car - HWM single-seater, but Alta-engined I think, not at that stage Jaguar?

I believe Alan Mann was a recipient of one of the 28 UK spec Ford GTs in 2005.

That's the one! Post in haste - correct at leisure! Naples GP and all that...survived in a garden summer house for some years (the car that is - not the owner).

I remember around 1990 someone I knew was researching a GT40 book (which never actually appeared) and he'd managed to conduct a lengthy interview with Alan Mann . At the time it was a major coup as Alan had apparantly kept his distance from anything motor racving related for many years and refused many such interview requests in that time, concentrating on his other business interests.

The same was said of Sir John Whitmore and it's nice that both gentlemen came back to the sport with enthusiasm.

I seem to recall the late Bruce Halford was much the same - getting back behind the wheel on a Lotus 16 in the 1970s/80s with great gusto after having no contact at all with the sport for well over a decade.

I recently met ex 1 Litre F3 driver Mike Watkins who's back behind the wheel of a single seater in southern France after three decades away from the sport. "You never lose it!" he said and he's suddenly bursting with enthusiasm again.

It seems motor sport is like a chronic medical condition; once infected, it never quite leaves your system !

Alan Mann himself raced occasionally in various Fords (Zephyr, Galaxie, Anglia and probably Cortina) in the early 60's.
