Well done Roger. Although I've seen them all before they are always worth looking at time and time again.

Perhaps Mr Cox can raid Eddies library for a few more of these wonderful images...

hint, hint....

I had not seen this thread, and am very thankful you bumped it.

Great photos, and so evocative of the times.

Claire Newbold I think. She raced an Anglia no 219 in the 1 litre Saloon race on 21st August 1965 (retired after one lap)

The name Clare Newbold had, if I recall correctly, a connection with Doc Merfield, he who ran the Fraud Cortina. The colour scheme of the Anglia in the photo is very similar if not identical to that of the Fraud. Was there any connection between these two racers?

Yes, she was entered by Doc Merfield ( I am not sure how I can rephrase that without it being a double-entendre). Probably his car, although I don't know what their relationship was. I think she even had the odd outing in his V8 Cortina. Wasn't the Doc a dentist?

The Doc was a Dentist. Does anybody know whether he built the Fraud? If not who did? I really liked that car a lot.

I've found a few more of Eddie's fine snaps which I don't think have been posted here before, although the times and places will be familiar to regular viewers of this thread:

Thanks Alan.

I wonder how well Jack Brabham and the Honda engineers communicated with each other in rural Cheshire?

I'm sure we can all picture the Honda chaps sitting demolishing a pint or two of Robinsons at the Red Lion :)

Interesting that Denny is being ministered to by a Honda mechanic on the grid, even though (according to www.formula2.net) he ran an SCA Cosworth-engine BT16 in the race in place of the Brabham-Honda which was entered.

The Honda mechanics apparently developed quite a taste for fish and chips during their stay in the UK.

I worked for a Japanese company, and most of them disliked "The Fish and chips"  with a passion, so they were always in London eating Sushi ! ( not my passion!)

Fabulous photos Alan, I would have seen most of these racers, sadly not at Oulton, but at Brands. Great stuff !

Of course Alan, Eddie's photos are a treasure, I visited Coniston recently, Eddies photos are so haunting, what a skill for photography.

Bump, see post above, because I like the photographs and because we have some ex Anglia racers and mechanics with us these days on TNF as well as plenty of new members who might not have seen these shots.

Please see also the Nick Loudon foto thread for the same reason.

Does anyone know how I can contact Eddie Whitham. I would like to use some of his photographs of my Broadspeed car at Oulton Park in my book.

Hi, love Eddie's photos, I am putting an article together about the anniversary of Donald Campbell at Coniston and would love to contact Eddie or the holder of the image rights to see if i may use an image or two, paid with credits off course. Was a book or collection ever made? Would love to see more of his work.

A simple question. Why are all the pictures from at least 2008 still clearly visible, yet on most other threads recent photos quickly disappear and not visible.

What has this guy done that others can't?

Eddie Whitham is clearly a magician, Terry!

I'm only guessing, but I assume it's all down to the choice Alan made for uploading the photos. Imageshack, for example, used to be a popular means of uploading photos but, when they changed their terms and conditions, most of our photos disappeared. (I think because we didn't want to pay anything!) Alan must have used a more 'stable' system.

Yes, I'm afraid that is the reason. The earlier posts were uploaded to Photobox and have expired while the later ones are on Photobucket.

Thanks for the thread bump. Going back to post 46 I think the leading green Mini is driven by late hero Harry Ratcliffe, going by his usual  inclination of his head and the logo on the n.s wing.  As ever, a wonderful thread.

Those of us who have been here a while have feasted on archives such as those for years. Try a search for Nick Loudon, another highly talented photographer whose work has graced these pages. Sadly some are no longer available, but there are some left.

I must apologise for posting the above response before I had checked back to the beginning of the thread. I gave the reponse because that has happened with othr posts of mine where the image is no longer available. However, checking back, I can still see all the pictures which have been posted as they are all on Photobucket. I wonder why it is that some of you can't see them

Are we saying that it depends on which upload service you use on how long the photos are visible for?

So which are most recommended?

Unfortunately Dropbox no longer offer the facility to create public folders. Existing users who already have them can continue to use them - it's the solution I use - but it's not available to anyone who signed up after Dropbox removed public folders as a default.

Thanks, Guys.

As others have posted, I can't believe I missed this thread! Such wonderful work, I agree the Campbell photos are beyond description, having a "calm before the storm" feel that turned out to change its meaning. All the images are so evocative of the times, an era I know many of us would give everything to return to. To fill a frame with a race car using only a 100mm lens says it all, one must ponder who the brave ones were after all!

Thank You Eddie, and my utmost appreciation to Alan for bringing these before us!

For me, at least, Pete is absolutely bang on.  The pictures from Oulton Park are sublime - we know that.  However, the Campbell pictures from Coniston are actually beyond description (as Eric says).  I am transfixed.  I feel like I am looking into a secret world that we only had previous access to via limited grainy black and white TV and newspaper coverage.

Utterly wonderful.  (Thanks Alan)

EDIT: spelling

I never need an excuse to bump the Eddie Whitham thread. However, today it may be even more pertinent, 50 years on from that sad day at Coniston Water. Thanks again, Alan, for starting it all those years ago. Fortunately the old photographs still show up. For those not familiar with Mr Whitham and his camera talent, please enjoy the shots so generously posted.

Very appropriate to bring the Eddie Whitham thread forward yesterday. Those haunting images, made even more thought provoking by the blue cast of the Ektachrome film as mentioned previously and the deep darkness of Coniston Water, really make you stop and pause. Wonderful but very sad images.

Is Eddie Whitham still with us, are their archives to look at his collection?

Phil Hosker (AuroraF1 to members of this forum) has been entrusted with a collection of transparencies taken by photographer Eddie Whitham during the 1960s. Eddie worked for, and, indeed, still does work for a North West newspaper, although these days his interest is in Rugby League but during the sixties he covered meetings at Oulton Park as well as the RAC Rally, and was at Lake Coniston in January 1967 leading up to Donald Campbell's ill-fated attempt at the world water speed record.

Phil's interest in the collection is for lodging in the Oulton Park archive, but possible publication is being considered and he would be interested to gauge reaction before proceeding further. So far, I have seen about 90 of the photos and the quality is superb. They centre around personality and grid/pitlane shots, although there is track coverage too.

Here are a few as a sample
