No 20? Nobody's identified him...

And isn't 77 Denis Riley in the SRV?

Best guess would be Enno Beusselman, he drove the Formcar whilst they were building the Trips, & I think you might be right about Laurie

I was going to say you or Gary Power but glad you stepped in. I thought it was around 72 that you owned it. Was it the formcar you crashed that day in the lap dash at Oran Park and hurt your Back Greg?.I don't know if it's Eno as the photo is Nov 1971 and in Lynton's earlier photo at Amaroo 31st may 1970 the Tripps was already running there. Didn't Jack Bono buy it off Bernie and call it a 'Bono' for a short time?. Bernie told me he first raced it at Easter bathurst 1968.
Met the 's' (---- Smith, can't remember his first name!)in SRV a few years back as his son in law to be just started running a Jacer Vee. He was making some replica Alfa stuff from 20's/30's CNC'd in alloy. Looked pretty interesting, wished I paid more attention at the time!

I have doubts if that's Enno driving the Formcar, too. Laurie Campfield bought my Elfin, and that's probably him [21].

The Bono Vee was built by Jack Bono, and was later driven by Frank Cuttell.

Bill Smith was the 'S', and Denis Riley was the 'R' in SRV. I see Bill occasionally....as a matter or fact we are going to [the late] Don Wright's old work-shop this Wednesday, along with some of Don's 'old mates', for the last get-together before it gets torn down. It was, and still is, Lancia stuff, by the way.

It'll be a shame to see that shed torn down...

It's a bit of an institution there where it stands, a part of the natural landscape.

So is it Denis back there?

How things change...

Remember how it used to be that you couldn't race if you lost your road licence?

Enno never drove on the road because of this. His brother, Udo (remember him, just as closely shaven...) used to drive Enno everywhere.

Has there been any mention of Frank Burke on here? He also had connections with the same bloke Enno did.

Bill Smith brought Damon Beck around to 'Don Wright's Workshop Farewell' yesterday. Although quite unwell, Damon chatted with me for a while. He told me that Denis Riley has taken on the task of restoring his [Damon's] Vee. Damon used to live a few doors away.....he moved there when he was 4 years old.

It was an eerie feeling, being in that old building, that had been completely cleaned out, and without 'Wrighty'. If only those old walls could talk!

That's good... something to keep Damon interested...

I only ever went to that shed once, though I used to drive (unknowningly...) past it frequently in bygone years. I had to see Don about the Citroen Special when I did the story about it.

And my question about Denis above?

Wow! I never knew it was every yellow...

I remember it as red, or an orange tinted towards red, and always going very quickly around slow corners.

Nor do I remember ever seeing that much hair on Denis!

The photo is from 73, Dennis sent it to me a few years ago now when I was trying to identify some Nota-like chassised thing I had in the garage, it wasn't the SRV btw,

That was DB, right at the end, running wide in the green car with the yellow stripe. (Why didn't I just say 'Team Lotus colours'?)

Is there more Lynton? Dad was in that field...

Looking at the clip

I assume first through is Bernie in the yellow Rennmax

the next two cars are hard to make out the yellow car is most likely Peter Finlay in the Nota (knowing his love for high mounted mirrors)

Then Aub Revell in the Standfast (No.4) and Neil Revell in the Revell (No.2)

Ian

This looked interesting so I pinched from another forum ......... Jack Bono left of Pete in the first photo, the Vee is an 67 Elfin that Larry Greenhalgh drove in 68.

Hi Ray,
At Catalina Park 1968, Pete was one of the invited drivers for a Formula Vee race.
These pics seem to indicate why he declined..............

He would have needed the 1300 engine to retain 'parity', wouldn't he?

Reminds me of the bloke who raced a Lotus 6 replica at Catalina, he was a very big guy and it was powered by...

...a Viva engine.

The Revell was much squarer around the front. Something like a brick.

I don't think it's Bernie in front - the striping looks wrong and the signage on the side of the car looks like it finishes with '...iths'.

The second car is a Mako, so that rules out Peter Finlay, who drove a Nota, didn't he? And I think the third car is either a Nota or an Elfin.

Much more importantly, any more of these? Car 48 maybe?

I also don't think it looks like Bernie in front...

The entry list includes just three Rennmax Vees, Bernie, Terry O'Neill and Alan Tucker.

P A U L B E R N A S C O N I is not in the entry list. Nor is Damon Beck, but our resident VW expert, Greg Mackie is.

However, if we turn to the entry list from 1972 we find:

No 1 - Laurie Campfield, Elfin.

No 5 - P A U L B E R N A S C O N I, Mako

No. 12 - Jim Evans, Rennmax

Is that helpful?

The first photo is Jim Evans in the Rennmax in 1972. Checked a few research proofs from 1972 to help confirm that.

These pics from Bathurst 1972 show the mist at the top of the mountain. If I remember correctly the Vees were up for race 1 and it was pretty cold and foggy down in the pits camping area. The Vees couldn't get warm enough to idle and I can remember Enno drove round and round the camp area trying to get the Tripps(?) up to operating temp. Pretty soon there was a bit of a vee parade around the camp site as other guys copied Enno. Strange we dont see him in the pics in his usual spot leading the field.

Greg , Thanks, Looks like I miscalculated the year.
I've got the race programme from '73 and I'm pretty sure in the main race Garry Dubois in the Trips and Alan Simpson from Tas battled out the first two places
with Steve Wiessner finishing third.
Enno's listed in the FFord category in the Elfin 600B in that programme.
I dont have a programme from '72

The races were at 12:44pm and 5:00pm...

Enno's FFord would have been a 600f, not a 600B. Or have I got that designation wrong?

In '73 the Vees had first race of the day at 10:30am, Campfield won from Dubois, Merz, Pyjamas and Paul, Alan Simpson was next, right on Paul's tail and with a 3:01.2 for fastest lap of the race. At 2:16pm they came out again and Dubois won from Simpson, Wiess, Paul and Merz, Campfield next with second fastest lap (3:00.8) of the race behind Dubois' 3:00.2. Wiess wasn't far away on 3:00.9.

The first race was three laps, the second was six.

Anyone know of any Formula Vee projects that aren't in the mainstream? or potential Formula Vee
restorations. For inspiration the following.

This is the Mako that we found recently.
Posted Image

The above Mako is up for grabs again. Steve Muller from Kombi rescue (located at Amaroo where Bullant Motors were) bought the car recently for a project. He's not going ahead with the project so the car is up for sale. Anyone need a project?

Fantastic to hear it's going to someone with a Vee background.

Tell me, does it come with Jack Porter's chassis jig, as shown in the picture?

And more seriously, did you get log books and history with it?

The termites may have beaten me to the jig, Bruce.

Not sure what's with it until I go through it all. Probably not much history.

By the way, did I see John on TV last night.....being quite vocal?

Maybe. I didn't see him, but there are a LOT of channels these days.

Was he agitating about the NDIS? He's (not unreasonably) quite passionate about disability issues these days.
