Do you remember the day, Peter, when the entire field crossed the line at the beginning of the LAST lap still in the length of the grid?

Yes, the TV people reckoned that the relative speed of the cars didn't matter, TV viewers weren't taking lap times anyway.

Hi,

As Group V (Historic Formula Vee) is a relatively new Historic Category on the block we at this stage are searching for any old Formula Vee's that would make good restoration projects for potential/current Historic competitors to work on and get back to the track.

If you have or know of any Formula Vee race car's pre 85 that aren't doing too much could you please contact me. Even if they are not for sale we are attempting to establish a register of where they and we maybe able to help establish some history.

There are probably about 300+ cars out there and they all didn't got to the metal recyclers in the sky. Ask you friends when you're at their place swapping stories what's that frame in that makes up half the chook shed, that chassis in the loft or at the back of the garage it could be have been Formula Vee.

Anyway my contact details are a follows

Hi, I have found 2 Vees here in victoria, one in Myers Flat is a Malmark/Elfin I ve been told chassis No4. End for ended at Sandown, sent back to SA & rebuilt. The other is I believe a Nota?Elfin campaigned once upon a time by father then son Bargwana, would either of these be historic?.
cheers.

The Nota certainly would...

A Nota is not an Elfin. Malmarks go back to the early seventies, IIRC.

If it's Jason Bargwanna's Nota it's the ex Finlay, ex John Smith car. My old boss at Group Automotive Services Peter H Williamson sold it to Jason when he was 19. As far as I know Harry never drove it. Alf was mainly helping Jason get into the sport at that stage. It is for sure an historic.

According to Elfin Heritage, eight Malmarks were built in Victoria by agreement with G. Cooper

Harry is Jason's dad, and Alf is Scott's dad.

Harry had a win and two 2nds at W.P. on the weekend [Group N Mustang]. Alf was helping out, and I was annoying both of them.

Hi Greg, sorry I missed you on the weekend. Yeah I knew Harry- Jason, Alf-Scott. Mainly meant that uncle Alf was helping Jason as I think Harry and Jason weren't getting on at the time.

I seem to recall Harry was too busy racing Production Cars and Alf would help Scott and Jason.

I remember that Jason bought back his Nota and restored it when he got a good V8 income. I don't know if he kept it.

Michael his wife bought it back off ARDC's Neil Turner for what might have been his 30th birthday or something similar. He did a hilclimb in it and sold it sometime around when the WPS thing fell apart. Think it's been on my 105 for sale for a while.

Anyway, aren't Harry and Alf interchangeable?

For the uninitiated, they're identical twins and have been known to swap cars, driving suits and the like to have some fun.

I hope you will forgive this bit of self-indulgence:

I liked this photo (taken by a mate I think) so much I had several large prints produced and framed for my then sponsor (Swagman). UV light and time have taken their toll on the print I kept for myself but search as I may I couldn't find the negative... until last week, about 35 years after I carefully put it away! Gee I loved that car, the best Elfin I ever had.

Dang, now that's cool! Nice to read some of our own are in that shot as well!

I love Vees, always have, since the late '60s. Vees at the SCCA Runoffs back in the day were staggering, and really they still are. Hope to still race one someday, at an age emulating Harvey Templeton, and that the heads supply holds out and/or someone starts remaking them.

Might be a good thread for saying, we just bought an '84 Westfalia to travel in full-time, possibly for several years. Might hafta put a number on her.

Yes, Mr. Mackie, two extinguishers to be on board despite water running though the pipes (Go Wasserboxer!). ;)

Greg ... I hope this doesn't show my ignorance again, but are you driving the VW in your signature /logo?
I remember going to Catalina around '65-'66 and seeing Terry Quartly racing a(Bono?) VW there before his Vee days . Would the pic be from that era.

Hi Paul,

Mick took the pic with the Minor following, at Eastern Creek south circuit last October.

The 'avatar' pic was taken by Dave Suttie, at Winton in 2009.

If you had been at Catalina earlier ['62 -'63] you may have seen me in a Beetle.

I'm looking for info on my Lamco Formula Vee, especially ownership and livery 1968-1973

It was first registered to Peter Jeffery in Victoria in 1968, the log books for
1968 to mid 1973 are missing but I do have the 1968 log book photos
(one shown below) the pics are b/w so it's hard to say what colour it was originally but
looks to be two tone.

From a 1973 log book entry and other info we know that it was orange/white at that time.

It may have been the orange/white Lamco pictured on Autopics at Sandown
September 1973 driven by Ken Hastings, http://www.autopics....ibiznez?id=8048
and according to the 1973 log book this car was definitely at that meeting.

I.Tyler (Toby Tyler) became the owner in May 1974, then Ray Colenso in September 1975.

Around this time it was painted blue/white. Ray won the Victorian point score in this car
in 1978 and Mark Wilson bought it from Ray.

Ray told me that Mark campaigned it quite succesfully for a few years afterwards.

We know it's history from then on and I bought it from Phillip Dickerson who had it from 1991-2013

Wondering if anyone knows if Ken Hastings, Toby Tyler or Mark Wilson
are still with us or if anyone knows any history of this car.

Thanks Paul Alessi Goulburn NSW

Some info for your search.
Ken Hasting I believe died about 3-4 years ago.
Toby Tyler is still around.

I know someone, Len Read, down here in Melbourne that is friends with him. I will contact Len and get some details for Toby and pass what I find out

Hi Paul
From the material I have available so far on the early years of FVee this car was first entered at the 19 May 1968 Calder meeting and was originally yellow before being painted orange/white. If you can give me a few days I can compile a list of the meetings he entered from 68 to 72 and can check when the car changed colour.

Hi Glenn,

That ties in perfectly, the car was first registered on 15th May 1968 (4 days before the Calder meeting ) and yellow makes sense,
in the b/w logbook pic it doesn't look dark enough to be be orange.

looking forward to those race meeting dates..much appreciated

The colour change should be between these dates I think

28th Dec 1974 Phillip Island Orange/White ( Toby Tyler)
4th January 1976 Blue/White (Ray Colenso)

Thank you, Regards Paul

Paul, the car appears to have changed from yellow to orange/white after 1970 but before the Aug 1972 Calder meeting (the car does not appear in 1971 or early 72).

The following is a list of all meetings, from my incomplete sources, where the car was entered. I have most Calder, Sandown and Phillip Island entry lists from this period but not too many Winton or Hume Weir so there may have been the odd entry there.
1968 - 19 May Calder (19), 4 Aug Calder (19) (mentioned in race report), 20 Oct Calder (19), 24 Nov PI (131).
1969 - 19 Jan Calder (19), 26 Jan PI (25), 16 Feb Sandown (79) (1st in handicap race), 23 March Calder (19), 4 May Sandown (7 and 19 - Peter was entered twice at this meeting with Len Lamb as alternatate driver), 18 May Winton (4th in one event), 25 May Calder (19) (2nd in one event), 17 Aug Calder (19) (2nd in one event), 19 Oct Calder (19), 9 Nov Sandown (19) (DNF Heat 1, 4th in Heat 2).
1970 - 25 Jan PI (19) (2nd in one event), 22 Feb Sandown (81) (co-entered with Len Lamb), 19 April Sandown (28 co-entered with Len Lamb BUT Peter was also listed as an alternate driver in the white Lamco (55) of Barbara Tyrwhitt-Drake), 16 Aug Calder (91) (2nd in Heat 2).
1971 - no entries.
1972 - 9 July Sandown club meeting (3rd in one event), 13 Aug Calder (17) (5th in one event and possibly 5th in another), 9 Sept Sandown (17).

Another source that may be useful (if you haven't tried it already) is the Ford Lot 6 Foundation at www.fordgtholot6.com Peter was a technician with the factory team and his family have posted a few photos of his Vees there. You may be able to contact them for more info.

If you get a chance would you be able to scan the race details from the logbook please? I am compiling spreadsheets of all vee races and whilst entry lists are very useful, having confirmation of a particular car appearing at a meeting is even better! If you can I would really appreciate it - maybe via email?
Cheers Glenn

Hi Glenn, Thank you very much for that, I will add it to what is known..I've already written down all the race entries from the 5 log books and
made a txt file, happy to sent it, I guess there is an email address on your profile....there are about 128 entries all up

We are missing log books from 1968 - August 1973 (your info will help here for sure)
We have log books for August 1973 to May 1976
Log books for May 1976 to April 1979 are missing
I have complete Log books for April 1979 to it's retirement in 2000

The car was was not on a track again until just recently (April 2013)

I rang that number but he was not the Toby Tyler we were looking for, he said he'd never raced Vees.

Ray Colenso told me today the Tyler we are looking for was from Geelong and perhaps never raced again after 1974
when he sold the Lamco to him.

Interestingly he is listed as I.Tyler in the logbook and Tim Tyler in some archives.

thanks anyway, cheers Paul

Thanks for that 275 GTB-4,

I was waiting to hear back from Ray Colenso and he found the previous owner of the Lamco for me, it was Ian (Tim ) Tyler from Leopold in Victoria
that raced it in 1974.
I spoke to Tim this evening he said he bought it from first owner Peter Jeffrey but while it was for sale one other driver had had a go in it perhaps
at Phillip Island...Peter Jeffrey worked for the Ford Racing Team and Tim Tyler also worked for Ford but in product engineering, the Lamco was painted an orangy/red colour in 1973 and according to Tim the colour was .......of course ......Vermillion Fire ( see Ken Hastings Lamco on Autopics)

I have quite a lot of new pics , if I can get permission I'll post some..thanks Paul

Known Ken for about 32 years. He sold the car after this race and retired till making a comeback in 2010 in Qld in a 1600 Jacer. Car was sold as is Geoff Humble and raced for a few years with a couple of different drivers but hasn't raced since about 1991. It's sitting in a Geoff's garage in Newcastle. The colours were based around the Williams F1 of 85/86. Ken's car ran bodywork out of molds that his old man Len had produced. My car and a few others ran the same bodywork. The molds are stting in a container outside now. As far as I know the car was sold with this bodywork which was then painted green but I'll check with Ken the next time I catch up with him.

Jacer,
Took me a few months to find the photos and get some scanned in. As you can see from the below my car was basically identical colour scheme.

After finding my old photos, thought you might be interested in seeing this photo of a triple dead heat at the 1996 Super Tourer support race at Calder. How often has that occurred? Its a poor photo taken by my mate's wife, but I never saw any other photo of this finish. I think it is Frank Haire furthest from the camera (or is it Cade Southall), a driver from SA whose name escapes me in the middle (Black car with Meccano or Tamiya sponsorship I think), and Bill England closest to camera. I have the result sheet somewhere...

Wow thats spooky, Ken must have a had a stalker! The sides are the Spectre/genuine NG with a little duct grafted in. The sides on mine/Ken's had big letterbox type verticle slots near the firewall. I think it's the genuine Spectre nose also which is slightly more rounded at the tip. The 'Taylor" nose on our cars was a little more pointed and had the Elfin badge dimple still in it. Ken's the president of the Vee association of Qld this year so still obviously involved so I'm going to forward the thread on.

I reckon Cade in the Scorpion as it was a brighter red than Frank's car. Black car don't know, not sure who was quick from s.a. then

Yes, sure now it was Cade. This was his first meeting in the Scorpion and jumped him up towards the front. It actually might be 1995 not 1996. I had the choice to buy the Scorpion from Mark Wicks, who I knew from karting days, or the Kingfischer from Mike Cullinan. I went the Kingfischer purely due to finances. In hindsight I should have scrounged some more money from somewhere and bought the Scorpion. :well:
