Looks like a road circuit,I'll plump for the TT Year 1979

Well, you´d plump wrong. :p
Actually, it is a road event, but it´s the 1978 Killinchey 150 which as you know as held at the Dundrod circuit. Dudley was riding a three pot 750 Kawa, and scored his best result outside of SA when he won the race. It was his first visit to the circuit which made his victory all the more note worthy. I think it lends weight to my assertion that he would have been better suited to the European type tracks rather than the Brit short circuit scene.
Does anyone know if Dudley actually rode in a TT? I can´t seem to recall ever seeing him entered there.

Quite right Phil, it´s Tom Herron in the 1977 250 Ulster GP when he won on Terry Shepperd´s cast aluminium framed TZ. He was so impressed with the bike he decided to concentrate his 1978 season around this chassis, but unfortunately they didn´t work as well when used on proper circuits as opposed to road tracks. The result was a rather dismal season for Tom until he switched back to the standard TZ´s.

Didn't Tom also ride Terry's 350 Suzuki at the time?

Hi,
I think it Andy Cooper, possibly in the 1982 Junior Manx Grand Prix, which he won. Sadly, he lost his life in an accident at Ballig Bridge a few years later.
I always remembered the unusual 'Batoyle' logo - don't remember seeing it on any other bike.

Russell,

I'm too late coming in on this one, but I remember watching the Thursday afternoon practice from school at the top of Bray Hill, and seeing him go by on that Suzuki. The worst part of the week was being stuck in the school hall doing a GCE exam, with the 350 race going on just outside - not exactly good for the concentration!!

All the best.

Morning all
Been VOR with man/pig flu and work, but the 2 pics of Dudley and Tom prompt me to say that they are both taken at Leathemstown corner on the Dundrod circuit,. which is one of those corners that I saw dozens of photos from in my youth, and always thought it looked a slow-ish corner, with the sepctators extremely close sat on the fence on the outside. Then you go there (as I did for the first time 4 years ago) and you realise that the approach to it and the drag up the hill afterwards to Deers' Leap is amongst the quickest sections of track anywhere. I've spectated from the field on the left, 3 parts of the way to Deers Leap and I have to say it's the most astonishing place I've ever viewed from. You can see the bikes from Leathemstown, about half a mile down the road and they just come towards you absolutely flat out all the way, with the big bikes coming past you about 5 feet away doing (according to the telemetry on one on board lap I saw) 180 ish and accelerating before knocking it back 1 for the leap. Ray Porter was mind blowing through that section a few years back, his Honda just sounded like nothing else on track. A feral howl at top revs.

It was the 1986 Senior, and Andy was off at Doran's, over the wall and down into the trees.

His GSX Suzuki popped the feed pipe off the oil cooler - they messaged Ballacraine to flag him in, but he'd gone through.

He was covered in oil from the waist up, and I'll never understand why he didn't stop.

Lovely lad - he left his road bike and helmet at our paddock tent before the race. It was only after I'd finished and come back to the tent that I was told he had gone.

I knew somebody had been off at Doran's, from the marks on the road, but there was nothing visible for identification.

Silly thing was that it was his Proddy bike - they hadn't wanted to give him a Senior ride, but he badgered them until they gave in.

Bad year that was - Robert Dunlop had a big off going down the 13th, and then Gene McDonnell hit the bloody horse in the Junior.

I'd had enough - I never went back to race on the Mountain.

Yes, no matter how careful one was / is, it´s the mechanical aspect that one has no control over. Or the totally unforeseen, like a bloody horse on the course. Thankfully these are very isolated incidents, but they do happen, sadly.
Oh well, the TT was always a bit of a gamble, I suppose. Doesn´t lessen the impact when a young racer loses his life though.
