Ok knickerbrook, seeing as you asked!  Another one from my archive.... WWW as I've got no idea!

Scan8_zps17dff2c6.jpg

No 132 could be Jeff Boniface's Manx with 'Jeffs Motor Spares' on the fairing. The rider looks more like Dave Habel than Jeff.

Tom - I too thought it might have been one of Boniface's Manxes.

I remember Brian "Fred" Hussey and Paul Selleck riding them in the seventies. They were oily old crates, but seemed to go well. Hussey showed everyone the way to go around Brands at a Bemsee meeting I was at once. He was so quick! Here is Selleck in good company on the grid at Brands. (Photographer unknown).

Anyone remember those Dunstall discs as on 94 ?

Had some on my 672 BSA twin which had loads of ex-works bits on it. Bought it from a motorcycle dealer in Baldock. It was ex-Tony Smith.

Next thing I new the bottom had dropped out of anything that had BSA in its' name, so I broke it.  The forks went to Hadleigh custom.

Mark, after my first ever racing crash, your dad welded up the footrest hanger for me on this bike.

He had a car repair/workshop? in Mill Hill near the service road entrance to Scratchwood services on the M1 if I remember correctly.  I lived in Boreham Wood at the time.

I watched Naturally Free (god its bad in places!) whilst doing my household  chores today...

Terrible to see the Castrol 6 Hour debacle ...I think it must have been...

1974
1st Ken Blake, Len Atlee Kawasaki Z1 900 344
2nd John Warrian Kawasaki Z1 900 336
3rd K Chevell, B Mayes Kawasaki Z1 900 334

Willing/Hansford were miles in front on the Kwaka...ran out of fuel around 5 hours, pushed it back to the pits then were told tyre was unsafe...argued the toss then withdrew in disgust.

Brian Hindle/Knight BMW won, but then were disqualified...Hindle retired on the spot in disgust

So Blake/Atlee winners...

Not the ACU's finest hour :well:

Australia: Edgar Penzig - amateur racer?

I made Edgars acquaintance through friends doing Bushranger and Troopers re-enactments at Old Sydney Town and other venues...some fine evenings were had at The Settlers on Mulgoa Rd (now a wedding reception place) and I will never forget the German Cavalry Trooper's pistol he once showed me...twice the size of a normal revolver

Came across his obit and was surprised to see the racing reference....anyone have any more info on his exploits?

I have a vague recollection of Edgar writing a column for an Australian bike magazine. Maybe Two Wheels.

It could be Gary Green a friend of Ken's. Which circuit was the photo taken at?

Mike I've re-scanned the image and played with the contrast and brightness but it doesn't look much clearer, it would have been taken on a cheap pocket camera by my dad.

I did try to post the new scan but the site isn't letting me for some strange reason! but if you pm your email address to me i'll send it directly to you.

You could be correct on the other guy, all I remember is that Ken signed my book and then said to me would you like Tom's as well? he then passed it to another chap who was with him and he signed it Tom Dickie, it might not have been the actual chap in the photo though, it would have been taken around 1972, all a long time ago now.

Hi Guys I have an Ex Alan Rogers Yamaha race bike and I wondered if anyone would have photos of him on it. The bike started life as a new TR3 Yamaha and was updated to TZ spec and later mono-shocked and was last raced around 76 I would say as it still has the stinger pipes. Thanks, Ivor

Hi, i have not posted for a while although I have been visiting and forgive me if this has already been mentioned, I have just been checking out the ICGP website as they have a race at Donington bsb this weekend.

A video on the ICGP website is called Continental Circus, Bernard Fau, have a look it is new and should be ready later this year, it features 250/ 350 races from the icgp, and some footage back in the day of the 1970's to1980's. Similair to the original Continental Circus with Jack Findlay.

Unfortunately the sound of the bikes is in French, so we Brits won't be able to understand it. :drunk:

Looking forward to seeing it though, through a cloud of Gauloise smoke.

Just watched the trailer and ordered the DVD. Roll on November.

Hi, I'm trying to get in contact with The Tony Smith of BSA works rider fame. Les Mason said that he was running a race school somewhere in France. Does anyone have any pointers ?

Rennmax, Thanks for the pointer. Unfotunately, there were two Tony Smiths in the 60s and 70s. I'm looking for the 60s racer and your Tony Smith is the 70s racer. Thanks once again. :cat:

I'm getting confused with which Tony Smith you are talking about, I remember the A.J.Smith in 1967

at Snetterton he won, the only person staying with him was John Hedger; he went on to win 2nd race.

Googling Tony Smith I 'm getting another Smith which doesn't look like the one I remember. The one in 67

was associated with BSA, I not sure if he was a works rider at that time?

This is the Tony Smith I remember::-  http://www.vintagebi...0/#.VDKzvvnlpkg

This Tony Smith I don't recognise:is it the same one? :-

http://www.guskuhn.n...g/TonySmith.htm

There is also another Tony Smith racing in the 70's?

Hi, The picture of Tony Smith at Mallory is the Tony Smith that I am trying to contact - AJ Smith. He was a BSA works rider in the mid to late 1960s. What was Tony riding in the 67 Snetterton race ? Most of the pics of AJ Smith on the internet are IOM TT pics, Hutchinson 100 pics or Thruxton 500. The other Tony Smith was a good fifteen years younger.

The results sheet only shows it as 650, it was a BSA. If you had asked me 40 years ago i would have probably remembered, would think it was the Spitfire 654. I only managed 6th on my T120.

Sorry can't be any more helpful. Was the photo on the GuzKuhn site the same Tony Smith?

Hi, I think Tony would have been riding the same bike that he rode on the IOM TT that year, which was his Spitfire 654. Can you remember any other events where you both raced ? The GussKuhn upper pic is the same Tony Smith.

Had look through old results didn't see any other rides with Tony in them, my rides were down south

and mostly Bemsee and BRC. i guess Tony moved up to more National / International meetings.

One thing thats confusing again is 68 Brands 500 shows him as Anthony Smith (24) motorcycle

engineer of Mosley riding with Mick Andrew on A65 Spitfore Mark 3? yet in 69 Thruxton 500 it shows

Mark2? Is this Correct. I rode in the 70 Thruxton 500 but no Tony.

I have many race programmes, scorecards, MCI and MC news articles and race write ups and Tony was recorded as mainly Tony Smith, but I've also seen him as AJ Smith and Anthony Smith. Motorcycle Sport shows Tony coming 4th on the Brands 500 miler on the BSA Spitfire in the 750 class with Mick Andrew - 180 laps. Although Tony is said to be riding a Mk3 in 68 and a Mk2 in 69, I would be extremely surprised if it wasn't the same bike used on both - so possibly a typo error.

Gus.  Sorry about the wrong Tony Smith. I really don't know why I got them confused as I know better (it might have been the French connection)

I had an ex-Tony Smith ex-works 654 BSA Spitfire in the 70s. It had been one of the works 'Production' bikes but had been modified for F750 racing. I bought it through a dealer in Baldock (the shop is now a hardware store). The dealers name was Laurie (can't remember the surname). I traded it for my 350 Aermacchi Mettise.

The BSA had a works close ratio transmission and alloy clutch etc. The front end was a Dunstall twin disc set up. I ran it for one year then had to break it to sell it, by that time no one wanted BSA twins.

Norman Hanks did an 'end fed' crank mod to my engine in the winter of 1973 and confirmed that it was a works engine. Many of the sidecar boys using BSA engines had work done by Norman via the works 'backdoor'.

Tony went on to set up a riding school in France using the Harley Davidson Aermacchi twins. He also had a 750 Harley racer which might have been the ex-Renzo Pasolini machine that was raced by Brian Hussey and a few others.

I have a feeling that Tony also rode a Linto for a few meetings and was fastest at the Hutch in the 72 season (I rode my 350 Aermacchi in the 'Summer Scratch' national race at that meeting) but when he drained the oil on the Saturday evening it was full of bronze particles so he did not actually race on the Sunday.

In fact, the school was using Aermacchi 350 4-stroke singles. But at some stage the prize for the best pupil who won the "casque total" competition at the end of each year was indeed a customer 250 twin racer - which in its out-of-the-crate state was not really up to the standard of those ridden by Pasolini/Rougerie/Villa . My good friend Pascal Renaudat was the recipient at the start of the 1976 sesaon and had a hard time with it against the TZ's.

"Gushoney bun" , I have an e-mail address for Tony's former associate in the riding school , who used to post on this forum under the name of "pilotes de légende" but who hasn't checked in for years . I'm sending you a PM with his details.

Purely out of curiosity Tony - was that the year Brian Adams won the "Summer Scratch" race? (If so, I was watching it at Clearways).

So what was it like to riding Brands backwards ?

Thanks for the picture, good memories..Before this one wasn't it Norton commando engine in a Rickman frame ?

This was Tony when he first got the Yamaha 750 which was an ex Dave Potter bike which Geoff Daryn purchased from Ted Broad.
The Rickman Metisses was in his early days, and Tony rode TZ250 & TZ350 before he got the 750. We also experimented with the 350 and put a set of 750 barrels on it which classified as a 373cc
Made it a softer ride when hitting the power band.

Eventually after the 750 Tony purchased an ex Steve Parrish Mitsui Yamaha TZ500 and did really well on it winning the King of Brands in 1984, which was the last time the event was run, until this year in BSB when Shaky Byrne won it...

Can't remember who won, I only know it wasn't me.

Brands the 'wrong' way round was a great circuit but like many circuits that are reversed many of the bends started to close in on the exit instead of opening up, so it was a matter of fast in, slow out. 'Paddock' and 'Clearways' were especially difficult, but 'Bottom bend' was uphill which made it easier. Coming off the long circuit from 'Westfield' I seem to remember caught many people out.

I later rode my Crescent 500 the wrong way round and finished up on the grass at Clearways with a couple of Spartons, we got back on the track to continue the dice.
