Jim Clark must have seemed like a (Mild mannered) barbarian walking into such a "Technicolor" festival of all that is good.

Walter - that Fangio story is very interesting. It reads like it could have been your Dad Btw...

Its amazing really...Hindsight shows that some GP/F1 drivers of the 1950's had difficulties with Indy. Fitch, Fangio, Farina...legends in Europe and non-contenders at Indy. The track of "4 left turns" was thought to be an easy go, until they tried them.

Your Blog helps me get through the Blah days...thanks!

It's interesting to see all the problems the Offy's were having. I read in Smokey's book that a complete Offy was $10,000, and those prices in the article seem to confirm it. Racing was expensive even then!

Walter, I thank you for posting your dads articles and the photo album. THANK YOU! :)

Good reads, keep them up!

But, it's a bit odd to see Chapman in a Lotus 49, complete with DFV and wide tyres in an article from 1964!;)

A little bit of artistic license...

It was the best shot of Chapman I could find/steal...for educational purposes only...

Sheesh.

Always a critic in the crowd....

Walter - Thanks again for re-printing your Dads words. For someone whom never had the chance to read them he first print, they are very educational and very special to the history of the Indy 500

Walter - A good friend of mine's Father-in-Law was John Blouch, who was chief mechanic for the Chapman Root Sumar Team for the entire run of the team. I showed him the photo you have of Pat O'Connor at the Speedway driving the Wheel Horse tractor and he liked it immensely. He thought the world of Pat, although Ray Nichels was in charge of Pat's car. If there is anyway that I could get Larry a copy of this particular picture, I know how much it would be appreciated.
I certainly enjoy your posts and revisiting that exciting time of my youth.

Tucker...

This one took many hours to compile...typing, photo scanning and editing (and stealing..err...borrowing), researching... My eyes are bleeding and my back hurts!

I used the published article from the Indianapolis Star Magazine, which they edited the hell out of, and Dad's original copy, along with many more photos...some never seen before.....EVER!

Going through all this material, I found a sleeve of black and white negatives which my father took in 1974 when Al Unser and Mario Andretti took the Tucker for a spin. Al and Mario were trackside for Firestone tire testing, and had nothing better to do than thrash a classic collectible car!

I really hope you all enjoy this stuff.

That's a good article. People always seem to view the Tucker affair either in black or in white, when in reality it was, like everything else in life, different shades of grey... I think the article gives food for thought for any perspective to look at it. Well done.

Brian, I'm a little curious about this shot and its background...

I came across it on another forum, I'm guessing it's 1956 but I don't really know. Any chance of finding out who it is beside the car and whose car it is in the background?

And is it at Indy?

With those doors, it sure looks like Gasoline Alley at Indy.

That's the owner standing by the car.
