Clarke Sturdgess Andrew, his FF Brabham was the first racer I ever sat in, they needed a crowbar to get me out, lol. They were blue cars if I recall, as a young lad back then?

It started in a garage of Brians and Joan house in Chingford (then Essex), before moving to Wood Street where they rented a small lock up garage, backing onto the Chingford-Liverpool Street railway line.
Brian had a Lotus 7 kit car, Dave and a few friends helped with this car, which used an 1000cc BMC motor, soon after moving to Eden Rd Clarke Sturgess from the Isle of Sheppy arrived and Dave took over the race preperation of his Lotus 7 Clubmans car, converting it from a live rear end to an independant rear end.
Success with Clarkes car, soon had interest from other clubmen drivers including Max Mosley and Meadspeed took on the race preparation of Max's U2 Mk6 which was to use one of the Mike Young Prepared Engines.
The first full time mechanic employed by Meadspeed was Dick Clampitt followed by Colin Gardner and a part timer who helped out in the evenings.
Dave took over full control of Meadspeed at some stage and moved garages to Cuthbert Rd, Walthamstow, where London Racing started.
It was here that the early preperation of the BT28 F2 car started.
The rest as they is History.

I was the part timer and worked alongside Colin and an American guy who's name I have unfortunately forgotten.
Mick, there were a number of part timers who worked for Meadspeed over the years.
Dick Clampitt and his brother Mick opened a small shop in Boundery Rd, selling and preparing Racing Mini's, later Colin Gardener joined Dick and they had garages in Waltham Cross and Edmonton.

Jack didn't actually get into the car-despite it being his.Max blew the engine up -pretty hard to do in a sprite- and he would never admit to Jack how many revs he was going for.I believe that he also co drove with Jack Wheeler (but I can't remember what in).
Either Spa or Nurburging IIRC

Red Socks,
Was it a Sprite or an MGB ?
I may be wrong, but I think it might have been fitted with a Lotus Twin Cam engine ?

I'll ask Jack but I'm pretty sure it was a BMC engined Sprite. Jack never had a B and ran BMC motors right through from the Sprite to Jerboa AFAIK

Was that anything to do with the old North London Racing Team of 1172 spls. etc with Alan Baillie and Clive Garnham et al in the early 1960s?

I saw Max race this car quite often, with, amongst others, Howard Heerey, Aurthur mallock and so many other good drivers, was it not Clarke Sturgess??
There were quite a number of decent Clubman Drivers around- Peter Deal and a guy who christian name eludes me, Sir name was Upton and was there a bloke called Brian Classic, who ran a Chevron ?
Once at Snetterton the front row of the grid was occupied by Meadspeed cars, Clarke Sturgess, Max and it could have been Brian Ecclesshire.

Mick,
Colin reminded me that the American's name is Jack Jazek.
We have been trying to find him, along with Clarke Sturdgess and Norman Abbott who all had connections with Meadspeed Racing.
Anyone got any idea's ?

Yep, Jack that was him, he used to ride around on a 250 Bultaco. If you see Colin, send him my regards, say it's the kid from the fish shop, he'll know. Tell him I made it to the grid, on two wheels though.Mick,
Colin reminded me that the American's name is Jack Jazek.

I will follow up your leads, much appreciated.
I'm affraid I can't help you with your enquiry, as I never worked on those cars.
Mick,
I will pass on your message when I next talk/text Colin.
A number of us are still in contact from the Meadspeed days, but it is now over 40 years ago !!

I was with Clarke a couple of weeks ago looking up any info when we found this forum. He is not on the internet, but said if you would like any information then I can let him know and pass it on. I am his sister in law.

Meadspeed Motor Racing Developments were a small company based in Walthamstow east London. They ran Max in the clubmans car prior to him going F2 with Chris Lambert in the North London Racing Team. They also prepared the clarke Sturgess FF Brabham and the Barry Foley/Robin Hall Team Humbug clubmans car amongst many others. I was a grease monkey for them as a 15/16 year old. The Firm folded when the boss went with Max to form March engineering.
In a telephone conversation with Barry Foley in 2002 (shortly before his death), as well as Max Moseley's U2 and the Foley and Hall 'Humbug', he mentioned that Jochen Rindt also had his car looked after by Mead Speed (he thought it was Dave Reese, but a post above mentions Reeves). Not sure if this is when Bernie Ecclestone was Rindt's manager or was this later?
