Hello,

I understand the website needs sponsors and all, but I think the ads are extremely annoying. They take almost 1/4 of the screen sometimes. Can't we just have them stay their original size and not "extend" that big?

yeah, very annoying...and they pop out every time a page loads, resulting in accidental clicks...I'd rather they stayed in the banner

Can you let me know which campaign in particular this is?

Circuit City & Sprint/Nextel, maybe others...I'll let you know

The ATT one I'm looking at now is working fine.

This is really getting annoying. Norton pop-up blocker seems unable to prevent the banner ads from expanding. When they do so, they occupy about 1/4 of my monitor screen. Making them go away requires a click elsewhere on the screen. Circiut City, AARP, Care First (BlueCross), Fabric of Our Lives (Cotton) are the ones I've noticed just now.

Microsoft office, atlantis and NFL Sunday ticket [and AARP daily bulletin [and National Guard]] all seem to be doing it too.

At the minute, it's probably easier to list the ads that aren't like that (only candian airlines and the F1 survey so far). 90% of my page loads include an "expanding" ad.

Ditto. In addition to the ones listed there's been one for the Bahamas here, and one for WWE Smackdown on myTV Network.

The expanding adverts aren't popups which is why your pop-up blocker doesn't block them. They are embedded flash animations, which at some point in the past few years gained the ability to expand outside their little rectangle on the page. I'd suggest if you use Firefox to browse that you install an add-on called "Flashblock". This replaces flash animations (mostly adverts) with an icon which you can click on if you really want to view it.

Yea they are really getting to me aswell and how about not having the videos automatically playing on the home page aswell? I know it sounds very lazy but I dont want to be clicking 2+ things after a page has loaded for me to start reading it.

How tasteless is this? One of the Ads by Google at the bottom of the articles.

Every ad in the upper right corner expands each time a BB page is loaded. When we ponied-up money for this site, we were told we wouldn't have to put up with the annoying, advert-laden pedestrian version. Apparently we're now expected to tolerate expanding flash ads, which require an extra click to disappear, on all our BB pages. I am not paying to be annoyed with visual spam.

Not having any problems with this. There were some ads that expanded when I rolled over them but that was when I was not logged into the site.

I'm logged in on the subscription bit of the site but still getting these expanding ads on the BB. Don't know whether that should happen or not (AFAIK, the BB isn't considered part of the subscription service so being a subscriber doesn't mean you don't get hit with ads).

Minute Maid is the latest to be added to the list.

(assuming you still want to be told which ads are doing it, ginga?)

Those using Firefox should download the 'adblock' add-on and you can block all annoying banner adverts.

That disgusting ad appeared on my site too - I went into Adsense and blocked the domain from supplying ads any more.

They seem to have a lot of these - Jeremy Clarkson Is Dead, EastEnders Is Axed - to get people's attention. Pretty disgraceful behaviour.

Well, the 'dead' ones are in poor taste, "EastEnders Is Axed" is just wishful thinking...

I get the automatically expanding ads, too. Sun-Maid raisins are making me crazy!!
I'll never look at a box of their raisins again.

Please stop.

AARP. They annoy me for a lot more than just popups!

Jack

PS: These are really distracting. I think a lot of advertisers don't realize that these things actually turn off potential customers.

See 'em at work on XP box with IE 6 (yeh, IT there is afraid of anything new). They're unbelievably invasive adverts - very freaking annoying.

Don't see them at home on Mac with Firefox.

Now imagine the skip barber ad is the sunmaid or whatever one and for a few seconds that will load in that spot and directly on the left of it covering all the f1 news headlines.

These ads are incredibly bothersome, and I suspect, counter-productive for the advertisers. They have made using this site very annoying, and I find that I'm visiting it far less.

I would appear to have three choices: Switch to Firefox (from IE), switch to a MAC, or drop my paid subscription to Autosport.com. One of those three costs me nothing; in fact, it saves me money.

Easy choice.

I think I have identified the ad network responsible for the offending campaigns and have suspended their ads until a fix for this issue can be found. I don't think the ads expand intentionally, they should only expand on demand (eg rollover or click) so there is an issue here that needs fixing. If you continue to be bothered by this issue, let me know.

Google: The offending 'dead' ad has been blocked from our site, as has any ad mentioning dead in the title.

And finally, to clarify, as a subscriber to autosport.com you will not see any ads when browsing autosport.com (unless you are not logged in). The forums operate outside of this, so even if you are a subscriber, you will see leaderboard ads at the top of the page.

I hope this helps. As I say, if these issues persist, let me know.

Cheers
David

Rollover doesn't indicate demand, click does.

It does when you rollover a specifically indicated point, which is what I was referring to, rather than just the banner as a whole.

For the Autosport staff. Like the Guardian, Autosport is one of the sites I disable AdBlock on. Until recently. There comes a point where ads become so annoying that the user experience is diminished and it's difficult to get to information without being completely distracted. You need advertising revenue. We know this. Many of us give clicks because of this, I do so on the Guardian and other great sites because I don't expect something for free but when you overstep the mark the advertising blockers go on and we forget to switch them back off resulting in all advertising revenue being lost.

Food for thought....

I'm using Windows XP Pro x64), and Opera Version 9.6 and never have any problems, hadn't any problems with Firefox Ver 2 or Firefox Ver 3 either.
As regards to Internet Explorer, it's one of the worst browsers out there and I stay away at all costs! Constant pop ups so wouldn't be surprised!
I've used Maxthon a small bit but don't know it too well. It's got a built in advert blocker (not just pop up) but again I'm not familiar with this. I did notice however that Maxthon remembers are remembered in Internet Explorer so I don't know if it uses, or is based, on IE in some way.
Also I use AVG and never have any trouble with viruses or that. It runs nicely in the background unlike Norton, McAfee, Panda, etc. and it's free so you can't go wrong!

To the Autosport staff - you will lose subscribers with this new policy. Wiegh out the money brought in from this practice and the loss of income from subscribers.

I can only speak for myself, I await your decision.
